Am I the only one?
I have noticed something that has built a growing curiosity in me since i joined this site about 2 months ago. A lot of people here have alopecia. As well as some other form of sickness, disease,condition or ailment. Many take medication and prescription drugs. I don't mean to offend anyone when i say this, (and i do apologize in advance if i do), But is there anyone here that is completely and absolutely healthy that has AA, AT or AU? Besides alopecia i'm as healthy as a horse. I don't even have allergies. No medical issues whatsoever. Is there anyone else who woke up to bald patches without any medical conditions prior to or shortly after they started losing hair?

I have AU, and I don't take medications outside of a low-dose antibiotic when my rosacea flares up and Restasis for dry eyes (due to old age. lol). But other than those two very minor annoying things, I'm healthy.

I had AA once when I was 6. It lasted 9 months and never came back until Apri 2011 when I developed AU out of the blue. I take no medications, exercise daily, and eat healthy.

I have allergies (mild asthma) only occasionally, and eczema, which I've had since I was little, other than that No I do not have any other major health issues, in fact I feel healther since I developed AA, I too have dry eye syndrom, and its pretty bad, but I was tested for sjogrens (another auto immune disorder) and I don't have it, all my test come back great, even my thyroid, which they were concerned about when I first developed AA. I have fewer colds, than I ever did too. I've often wondered if we have a higher immune system or something, if thats so than its a good thing to come from all this. Good question.

My ex used to get miffed when the whole family would come down with bad winter colds, and I would stay healthy!

Yeah...me. I had had childhood measles and chicken pox several years before my first spots, and eczema and impetigo in early elementary, but all that went away before the alopecia made itself known in fifth grade. Now, I just have AT with a ring of some white hair on my head, and with arm and leg hair mostly gone. Even when I had AU for awhile in the 1990s, there was no other condition. I may have peanut and shrimp allergies...do those count? Right now, I feel fairly healthy and have lost 20 pounds since April. I will be watching to see if my diet changes will change any hair growth patterns.

Tallgirl, congrats on the weight loss!! I could stand to lose 20 myself. Now with my "new" hair I may be able to start walking again, which I know helps so much, haven't exercised much all summer too afraid of the wind:( Wish Summer was just beginging now. What did you do other than cutting out calories?

I joined Take Off Pound Sensibly (T.O.P.S.) and started competing (mostly with myself) weekly for loss, listening to tips, etc. I have lost the most weight in the group each month for the last two months. Mostly a diet of veggies, fruit, oatmeal, hummus, low-fat cheeses. I have had very little meat, no sugar or breads, no sodas or mochas, and very little red wine. Small meals of 1-2 selections, no snacks other than Greek yogurt and fruit, or cold veggies with dip. No rice, chips, pasta, bagels, tortillas...and just a couple of potato dishes. No pizza. No ice cream. No cheesecake. No fast food...or, if I do, I get the child size with no bun, wrapped in lettuce instead. Sometimes they use so much lettuce, I get a free salad when I cut it up (ask for a fork and knife, plus low-fat oil/vinegar at the drive-thru). Drink? Water. I also step on the scale many times a day to make sure I don't creep up in weight.

Thank you all for your responses. At least i have a clearer prospective on things. And now that i think about it, there might not be any such thing as a perfectly healthy person. At least not for an extended period of time. Like Tallgirl, i've had the chickenpox but as an adult. But this was at least 5 years after my first bald spot. I've also had a lumpectomy (removal of a benign lump from my breast) at 18 and i suffered from a horrible case of typhoid fever for almost 2 years! (dont ask). The irony of it all. Now that i think about it, i'm not the superhuman i thought i was. =(

Deejay, this is an interesting post. One of the things I have learned as I age is that everybody has something. You can take that as a bad thing, or you can say just that is what living is. I am healthy but I do have uterine fibroids, which I believe speaks to a hormonal imbalance that might also have something to do with my alopecia. I also have bad joints and dry eyes, and have some other medical scares, but nothing very serious (knock on wood!) and I feel healthy. But one of the downsides of advancing medical science is that people live longer, but they also are better diagnosed when they have ailments. Just my perspective on things.

That is a good question - I am not one of those - I have RA. BUT my dad has alopecia areata without any other health issues. BUT there are many women in his side of the family who have RA ....

I just have seasonal allergies, ones that came about AFTER the AA. There's a recent paper from the New England School of Medicine that states that you may begin to develop allergies because of AA, so that's what I'm thinking happened in my case. Otherwise, I'm healthy. :)

Hi Deejay!
I am healthy as a horse. I cant even remember the last time I caught the common cold! I started losing my hair at 14 (12 years ago) and was completely bald by 15. No regrowth ever. I am a very stress-free person and there is no one else in my family with it
I guess sometimes it is really just a fluke
