Hello all! I haven't logged into this community in oh so long, but recent transitions on my scalp have had me thinking about my Alopecia all over again. I was diagnosed with AU in 2013 when I lost 95% of my hair in a matter of three days (I wish I was exaggerating).

Overtime, I saw very gradual process in regaining hair. I saw full body and facial (eyebrows and eyelashes) hair regrowth, around 60% of scalp hair regrowth, but I didn't see the most significant change on my head until late last year. To those that may be curious, the only thing that I was doing different in my life was changing my lifestyle to incorporating heavy lifting gym days 3-4x a week. Aside from that, my diet was still in need of help (albeit definitely healthier than before), and was not on any medications or injections. Up until now, there were no signs of Alopecia anywhere on me, so much so that I've been comfortable enough to wear my natural hair (like a bob length) in a mini ponytail for a few months now.

I would say in the last 1.5 months or so, I've seen a lot of hair loss every day. I'm talking about an easy five-ten fall out strands every time I comb my hair and maybe 15 strands of hair on my bathroom floor at any given time. Perhaps it's been too long for me to remember how daily hair shedding is, but I do feel certain areas on my crown thinning during this time. I don't see any shiny balding spots in particular, so my question is- do I have Alopecia Areata at the moment or is this just a normal hair loss amount? I guess after a four years of Alopecia, I don't remember 90% of what the rest of my life have been like... I know and understand that Alopecia comes and goes in many, but it's disheartening to see such great results only to be possibly losing it all again but this time at a more gradual rate. Any insight would be appreciated! Thank you.

Hi.
I was wondering what hair started growing first ?
Oreinge.. The story of your regrowth is not only wonderful but amazing. I am so happy to hear stories such as yours. Although I have been dealing with alopecia ariata for over ten years and have had continuous shedding then regrowth, I have never completely lost all hair. I am now dealing with at least 40% hair loss at present. Knowing what I know and, I hope its not the case, but since AA just sneaks up on you, your current loss of 10'
-15 strands of hair a day is considered normal I don't know that it is normal for us alopecians. It could be a sign of relapse. I would see a doctor right away. Dont wait. All the best to you.
I was just at my hairdressers yesterday getting my daughter a wig for her alopecia totalis and he said shedding 120 hairs a day is can be normal for people without alopecia. I hope that helps! Good luck to you:).

Hi. I don't know either. I don't remember. I have had AU for about 3 years or so. My eyelashes started growing first, then I saw hair here and there and then miracle of miracles some on my head! I have enough regrowth to go without my wig but it is still very short and thin on top so I can't tell if I am losing any or not yet. Good luck to you! (and to me) I'm afraid to get too excited about it. I know how I would feel if I saw even a few coming out! Take care and keep us up to date! (I rec'd a compliment yesterday from someone who said she liked my haircut! lol)

Unfortunately, this is common. As a kid, I went through this almost every year. My hair ultimately stopped growing back and I wear a wig all the time now. Try to enjoy the hair you have, and don't let it define you. Keep a smile, it all works out.

I don't really know but it doesn't sound like you are losing that much.  I have AU and my eyebrows and eyelashes came and went a couple times.  I haven't seen any hair anywhere in about 6/7 years.   I hope you keep yours and your pic looks great.

Woow this is so awesome I am so Happy for you try not to count hairs just keep stress Free and keep up the gym workout God Bless

Oreinge, I'm so glad to hear you had regrowth so fast! Don't panic. We all do lose a lot of hairs each day.

Please keep us posted.

OK, this may seem random, but you never used Wen, did you?  95% in 3 days.  Sounds like my daughter. Her hair loss was from Wen cleansing conditioner (they've acknowledged tens of thousands of similar complaints and facing tons of lawsuits) . With your description, I just had to ask!

Hi Oreinge!

I have AU, have had it for over 30 years now.  When I started out as AA when I was 18, my hair would come and go.  After my first child, at age 23, slowly and gradually, I went from AA to AU in about 2 years.  The hair never came back.  I went to all kinds of doctors from har specialist like Philip Kingsley, to endocrinologist, to dermatologist and nobody knows anything.  So here I am 31 years later living with AU.

What I have been hearing from researching and watching videos on Youtube from some survivors, its something very tiny and minute that triggers an autoimmune reaction.  One young lady went paleo diet and grew her hair back.  Something in our system triggers the Th17 helpers to inflame our systems and it causes this reaction.  I find our disease very fascinating because something so small is triggering this reaction and I'm determined to figure out what it is.  Our body is such a fascinating machine in its works, the more I research the more I discover its mechanisms

Hi Dreamscometrue...thank you for your post. I too have been dealing with AA for over ten years and am determined to find out what it is that triggers this truly frustrating condition. I have read many posts about people having success with the paleo diet and helping restore hair. Have you tried paleo?

I have lyme disease and truly believe that this is the cause of my au.  It is autoimmune reaction and can be triggered by anything.  I had the lyme for 7 years and never had any hair problems.  We had a portion of our home remodeled and right after that all my hair fell out within a month.  A few months later my eyebrows and eyelashes went too.  I think it was from mold or whatever was uncovered during the renovation process.  Anyone with autoimmune should be aware that anything can happen and to be careful.  Right now I need dental work and am afraid to have anything done because it may stir things up.   Oreinge, I don't think you have to worry because the amount of hair you are losing daily sounds very normal.
