At least that is what my family told the child abuse hotline.

Two years ago my daughter was diagnosed with AA. Since that time at its worst she has experienced 80% hair loss and at its best a few spots here and there.

Today I received notification that a child abuse claim had been made against me and that the state wants verification from my daughter's doctor that this is an actual disease and is not me or my child pulling out the hair along with proof that the desease is difficult if not impossible to treat.

I am angry beyond words... stressed and scared. Why would someone do this? We don't deserve this.

When my hair first started falling out years ago, a babysitter where I grew up made a similar claim. Fortunately for my family and me, my dermatologist and pediatrician intervened and provided the TN Department of Children's Services with more documentation than they themselves had on had to refute the claim. It was probably the first time DCS had ever seen the word alopecia, much less heard of it, and the matter was quickly resolved.

If you haven't already done so, notify your child's dermatologist immediately and get as much paperwork regarding AA to your local child welfare agency. Also, enlist the assistance of a child advocate and a great family attorney that will have your child's best interest as well as yours at the forefront of their minds. And *do not* be afraid to enlist the aid of the local media. Nothing makes a false allegation of child abuse and neglect go away like bad publicity -- and in an age of shoestring budgets and increasingly horrifying cases of real abuse and neglect that occurred under the noses of these departments with little to no intervention, it shines a spotlight on these departments and makes them answer why they choose to interfere where no interference is needed.

I wish the best of luck to you and your precious little girl -- hang in there!

No you don't. I just cannot fathom the kind of person that would do this to you.
I don't know how they can live with themselves.
You take care of yourself and your daughter. I will keep the both of you and your family in my prayers,Linda

I share the thoughts of those who commented before me, It is a very sad thing that this has happened, I would hope that whomever made the complaint will be completely educated about Alopecia, It would be senseless if they just let this drop off at child protective services, the more people who know about Alopecia the better! I work in the health care field and you would be surprised how many nurses have no idea what Alopecia Areata is, some just understand that Alopecia means hair loss, but don't have a clue about it being a immune disorder. It's easier on us as I know to keep our condition to ourselves sometimes, I think that I'm going to start opening my mouth even more about having it. If it helps even one child or family not be hurt by ignorance it will be worth a bit of fear on my part. ((HUG))

My prayers and hugs are being sent your way! As a mom of a daughter who has lived with Alopecia Totalis for 13 years my heart can totally understand your daily pain for your daughter. Keep strong for her. Know she will watch you to learn how to react to jerks like this. You have the medical data and tons of support behind you. This is a waste of your energy, so use it as a teaching tool to show your daughter how to react to ignorance in the world. Our daughters are always watching us! God Bless you, from one Alopecia mom to another!

No,You don't deserve this, The nurve off some people, I have a little girl she is 6 now she as alopecia too. she had it when she was two years old,But don't worry about other people calling the hot line,Because they them selfs don't understand what AA is.

You both have been in not only mine but many fellow alopecians thoughts & prayers. I was wondering being we are now Mid October, have you heard from child services regarding the allocations made against you? I truly hope all is well.

Just to add another voice of support, I am sending lots of love and hugs your way. I am 67 years old now, but I will share something that happened when I was 13 and that I will never forget. I was a real tomboy & my dad and I (I was a total daddy's girl) were playing catch in the back yard one Saturday morning. I was on the JV softball team at school and he was helping me improve. Suddenly a helicopter flew overhead, really low, and I got distracted. I looked up at the helicopter just as Dad threw the ball to me. He frantically called my name and I turned to look just as the softball hit me right between the eyes on my nose. My parents took me to the emergency room and the doctor told them my nose was broken. The doctor repositioned it and taped it. On Monday, I went to school with 2 very black eyes and a swollen face. Although I told my coach & gym teacher what had happened, my parents were investigated by the school for suspected child abuse. It was HORRIBLE for them. My parents loved me very, very much...my mom had had a number of miscarriages before I was born & I was a very loved only child. It was terribly painful for them. I don't know if this helps at all, but be assured that other families have lived through horrible investigations.
