I know everyone is different, but I wanted to know how long did it take you to lose your hair and how did it come out?
When I watched the Gail Porter story she said she lost all of hers in three months, I have had alopecia almost a year now and I am still losing from new spots and the old ones look pretty much
the same. Also, my hair doesnt come out in clumps like other people describe. I wouldnt even know I was losing hair if I didnt see the spots.

Thanks for sharing

Mine started last May and now I'm completely bald and the eyelashes and eyebrows are now starting to go. I was wearing a wig by 4 months. Seems like everyone is a little different
Hi Tamara,
The first time I lost my hair it was very quick, within 3 - 4 months I went from happy healthy head of hair to AU. I think it possibly was so fast as I had been trapped in a house fire and i think it was definatelt trauma induced. Second time it was a much longer process probably best part of a year. Third time I got fed up with daily routine of wake up, check pillow, have shower, clear plughole and so I opted for the easy option by fast tracking and visiting the barber (who i have to say was horrified at my request) It was the best thing I could have done because it allowed me to move on and cope with things. I am now on my fourth time round, this time was fast again i have to and I'm once again AU.

I think alopecia is such an unpredictable disease, it has no rhyme or reason and no 2 episodes are the same not even if the 2 episodes are happening to the same person. I had a long spell between the ages of 25yrs and 30yrs when i was AA and although I was losing hair constantly and developing new patches older patches were growing back at the same time so my condition remained really manageable.
Hey there.
No easy answer to that I'm afraid. this condition is like having eczema. It can flare up and calm down almost spontaneously. There are mild cases and very extreme cases. If you loose most quickly for over 18months, might be more severe than a few patches that can be concealed for very mild. Its not inevitable to loose it all.

The way this condition can change quickly enables many alleged wonder treatments to take the p**s with enticing pictures of before and after. Lets just hope you remain at the lower end of the scale. I have always had severe loss since onset, yours may calm down. Try help it with your positive thoughts and dont get knackered out with the what if's. Warm wishes
The first time I lost my hair, it took a year. The second time I lost it as a teenager, it took 3 months. When I lost my hair again after my dad died, it took about a year. But when I lost it again (and my eyebrows along with it) -- it only took about 6 weeks.

Remember, AA has no rhyme or reason to it, so depending on how often you get regrowth or not you may lose it faster at times than others.
Hi Tamara,

It took 5 years for my hair to completely fall out. I was diagnosed with alopecia in February of 2004, i was in my freshman year of high school.I am now in my 2nd year of college. My eyebrows and lashes just started to fall out about 9 months ago and are almost completely gone...But it does depend on the person...I was diagnosed with AA but after five (long) years it has progressed to AU...
Hi Tamara,
Well I found my 2 spots in the beging of oct of 2008 and let me tell you. from there on my hair just started to fall so fast. I had hair all over the place. I was so scared I did not know what I had not even my doc new what I had. so I went to see a dermatology so he did a biopsy. on dec 31 2008 I had lost all my hair and was diagnosed with Alocpecia Areata my dermatology told me that there is no cure for it but that he was going to give me some injections to see if it works and a cream. he said that my hair could grow back but that it could fall out again. so far so good is growing and praying that it will stay.
I noticed my first bald spot in Nov, 2007. My appt with dermetologist wasnt until Mar. 2008. By the end of Jan there was more bald than hair and I was tired of all the mess of the constant fallout, so I shave it off!! Felt great to not have to go thru the daily trauma of hands full of wet hair in the shower and all that hair sliding down my body. By March I still had hair everywhere else, by midsummer that was all gone as well. No more shaving or plucking. Yahoo!!
Hi Tamara,

I've had thinning body hair, eyebrow and eylash hair for about a year now. I know it's definatly thinning but the doctors I've seen are dismissive. They told me there's nothing wrong, so, I started looking into it myself. After a little internet research I found that the symptoms relate closlely to Tellogen Effluvium. The description for this condition states that after a bout of thinning hair, things return to normal after a while. In my case, this isn't happening. The strange thing is, my beard and scalp seem unchanged. Even though I do have heredetary baldness. So, I've yet to meet a doctor who is actually interested.
I started with on small bald spot on July 5th 2007. By Sept I had lost so much hair I had my first head shave. I was completely hairless by August. So within 3 months I lost it all. It's been almost two years now and I am seeing some regrowth mostly white hair with brown at the crown. No spots but not diffuse regrowth either.
Hi, I lost all the hair on my head in 2 wks. That was 6yrs. ago. I then started losing eyelashes and eyebrows. Then lost the rest of the hair on my body. The eyelashes and eybrows never completly fell out, but some regrowth occured. Now some hair on my head grows in and falls out ,this goes on constantly. Just like some others it grows in diff. colors than my original hair color. I wish science would look into this more seriously, but don't see it happening.

i found my first spot in march. i didn't notice it happening at all. noticed the first 1 inch across spot at the top/back of my head one afternoon after a shower while running my fingers through my clean hair. i saw a doctor and received cortizone shots to the scalp. by april i had a second quarter size spot on the right side of my head, a dime size spot of the left side and the spot in the back had grown about 1/2 an inch. the doctor switched me to steriod injections in the arse (kenalog / intramuscular). at my may doctor appointment there was no sign of regrowth but no new spots either so we repeated the same amount of steriods to the arse (kenalog /intramuscular...either 40 or 60 mg, not sure). i've also made some lifestyle changes (vitamins, regular exercise and yoga and feeling freer to tell people to go to hell if they stress me out) that might have helped. hope this helps. good luck tamara.
