I was at a salon getting eyebrow tatoos recently and the technician said he has had many clients with alopecia and many of them experience memory loss.
I, myself, have memory loss but didn't think it was related in any way to alopecia...just thought it might be a stress response. Does anyone have this linkage? Just curious.

Never noticed this but revising for exams just now and I can tell you my brain feels like a sieve.
Did the doctor ever talk to you about hypothyroidism or low thyroid? Memory loss or poor memory is one of the symptoms of low thyroid.
Well I have never had any problems with memory in fact I actually remember a lot of useless facts that I didn't even realize I still knew until I needed them. I think we all just have different ways of storing memories so while it might seem to you like you have a horrible memory you might just not be trying to remember things in a way that is best for you. For me I will read a page and then visualize it my mind so that come test day I can bring that image back. I would try some different memory strategies and see if that helps. My grandmother for example rhymes things so that she can remember them and my sister needs flashcards and such.
I think there is a natural stress response to alopecia which does make one a bit flighty. I myself have experienced extreme memory loss in losing track of a sentence while I'm speaking it. This is completely out of character for me. Now this started right when my Lupus symptoms revved up and that's when my hairloss started as well, but memory loss, lack of concentration and other cognitive issues are very common when experiencing a major illness.
Good points - thanks for the responses. :)
I'll have to make sure I check into hypothyroidism...I had no idea about its correlation to memory loss. Thanks!
Fair enough! Let's put that myth to rest. :)
I'm not sure I get the joke regarding your mate...one benefit to having a poor memory is that famous quotes, books and movies become new to you again! You can watch them over and over and not remember the ending. Downfall - you don't get some obvious references. :(
Hahaa...sorry. I was having a dense moment there. I quickly read it and thought it said 'bar'.
Could be. :)
Melissa- I just got back from getting lab work done by my doctor. I found out I have extrememly low levels of Vitamin D and vitamin B12. Which she said could cause memory loss. I was on Adderahl all through college to help memory loss. I think I should be on it still. Maybe you should check and see if you are low levels of those too?
Nope, I have a memory like an elephant (*knock wood*) to be honest I probably remember more than I care to recall. LOL!
I experienced memory loss and took alpha-lipoic acid (synthetic lipoic acid) as a chelating agent and noticed a drastic improvement also immediately. A good natural source is spinach.
I find this memory loss topic very interesting and close to home. I have a history of Hypothyroidism,Fibromyalgia, and had elevated ANA test on one occasion (neg. for Lupus). The AA presented itself on and off for the past 20yrs (patchy, but always grew back very quickly). Maybe 6-8 yrs ago, I noticed a sharp decline in my memory. I never discussed with my Md assuming it would pass. It did appear to be on and off but more on . Then I was diagnosed as being Perimenapausel and all hell broke loose. It came down on me like a ton of bricks and lasted for maybe 3yrs. The worse is over but my memory was awfull and I sometimes thought I was loosing my mind. I would sometimes forget what I was saying mid-sentence. Very embarrasing it was. The changes I was going through inwardly and outwardly ultimatley cost me my relationship with someone I loved deeply. He just chose not to roll up his sleaves and stick it out with me. Such is life! It was at this time that the alopecia got worse and I decided to shave my head. I think every ones journey has some similarity's. My perimenapausal symptoms have gotten better (without meds) and my memory is much better however there are times when I have some hormonal stuff going on and the symptoms return yet I think the worst is over. I think memory loss is somehow related to alopecia especially if hypothyroidsm is present. Kalilah
