I have received a lot of interest from others on here in my involvement with the Xeljanz trials at Yale.

I thought it would be nice for everyone if I documented my progress on here.

Xeljanz is a Jak3 inhibitor and is believed to work with alopecia by turning off the distress signal relayed by the hair follicle to the attacking immune system which is the cause of the hairs falling out. Xeljanz comes in a strength of 5mg per pill and a full box contains 60 tablets. The recommended dosage for arthritis is 1 tablet in the morning and another in the evening each day.

The trial is set in a series of stages and there are requirements before participating. These include monthly visits and blood tests every 2 weeks. Dr Brett King is absolutely fantastic and is an inspiration to me. His positivity and enthusiasm gives me the much needed hope I have craved for over a decade. I have been put on a low dose to start with which is 1 tablet every other day. My dosage has now been increased to 1 tablet every day and next month it could be increased to 2 tablets per day depending on the results.

I have completed my first month and have already noticed my alopecia has stabilised . I have not lost any existing hairs. In addition to this I have seen little hairs growing in my chest area as well as eyebrows. Fingers crossed! To date, I have experienced no side effects.

Hi vjensen , are you taking the oral along with the topical at the same time?

Yes 15 mg/day
Started a week ago also going to stay positive using it only on big spots slight tingling and slight itching.Hope that means it's working. The tube looked like a good size when I got it in the mail but it's getting used up quickly and not using a lot of cream on each spot. Will keep everyone updated

That's not exactly true , human preliminary trials have been done and successfully. Look at Dr King's patients.

I surely hope so. Would love to transition to a topical at some point.

This is not FDA approved yet and a commercial preparation does not exist yet. Some people on this forum say they are buying it through a particular compounding pharmacy, but you'd have to pay out of pocket (I've read $300/week) as your insurance is unlikely to cover it.

Its $330 a TUBE, not $300 a week.

I thought the one patient who did the cream only got eyebrows and some scalp hair back and continued with internal?

This article does say Dr. King thought it was as effective as the internal version, but then why would he have her start on the pills?

It's more dangerous internally. If it was working just as well as a cream, I'm not sure why you would take it systemically.

I watched an interview with Dr. King earlier today in which I believe he described using the pill for larger cases (universalis, totalis severe areata etc) and once there is a large amount of regrowth then using the cream for touchups.

would love a link to this video. thanks for sharing!
