Xeljanz (Tofacitinib Citrate): My experience on the trial
I have received a lot of interest from others on here in my involvement with the Xeljanz trials at Yale.
I thought it would be nice for everyone if I documented my progress on here.
Xeljanz is a Jak3 inhibitor and is believed to work with alopecia by turning off the distress signal relayed by the hair follicle to the attacking immune system which is the cause of the hairs falling out. Xeljanz comes in a strength of 5mg per pill and a full box contains 60 tablets. The recommended dosage for arthritis is 1 tablet in the morning and another in the evening each day.
The trial is set in a series of stages and there are requirements before participating. These include monthly visits and blood tests every 2 weeks. Dr Brett King is absolutely fantastic and is an inspiration to me. His positivity and enthusiasm gives me the much needed hope I have craved for over a decade. I have been put on a low dose to start with which is 1 tablet every other day. My dosage has now been increased to 1 tablet every day and next month it could be increased to 2 tablets per day depending on the results.
I have completed my first month and have already noticed my alopecia has stabilised . I have not lost any existing hairs. In addition to this I have seen little hairs growing in my chest area as well as eyebrows. Fingers crossed! To date, I have experienced no side effects.

Welcome. Are you in US? My package was at the customs for 9 days and I lost all hope on getting it. But it came. Good luck

Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I live in the San Francisco area. If the shipment gets held up at customs, is there anything you can/need to do, or do you simply wait and cross your fingers?

I read that you can legally import 3 months of prescription drugs if you have a prescription.
I was buying much more than 3 months supply, so I just waited.

Yes, I thought since it is approved for UC my insurance would definitely cover it. However, my insurance (Health Net) denied me (and my appeal) saying they will only approve it for the treatment of UC if the patient has tried Humira for at least 3 months without seeing any improvement. Having to endure such a shitty disease is awful enough, but having to also deal with the shady insurance companies adds more stress/frustration to the situation.

My order from Beacon took about 12 days. I ordered 20 boxes with 30 per box and it made it through customs. I live in the Sacramento area. I have a second source but they are a little more expensive, about 150.00 for a bottle of 60. I buy from both as they are different brands so I take 2 of each twice a day (20 mgs) just to be safe. I've been taking the 150 pills for a few months now and I'm progressing.

Who/where is your 2nd source, if you don’t mind sharing? I’m hoping to be able to order through Beacon, but if I’m not able to, it would be great to have a back-up option.

My order from Beacon, I live in the Sacramento area. It took about 2 weeks to receive it. I order from a second source, one I've been ordering from for the past 5 months but they are a little more expensive. I order from both.
