I have been in menopause now for about 5 years- I have never used hormones because all the medical reports/news/etc... said it was so bad for you, hormone therapy would cause cancer, heart attack, stroke.  But now I am seeing on the news that it appears that hormone therapy is not bad for you as it was once thought, only if it is not used for long term,(decades is long term apparently)  and the rates of the above are not higher by using hormones.  I am curious if any of you are on hormone therapy and do you notice a difference with FFA symptoms?

I am still plagued with menopause symptoms, hot flashes and sweating and nausea, yay.  I have to go for my yearly check up in the next month or so and am going to ask about hormone therapy because 5 years of Hot Flashes Sweating and Nausea is 5 years too long and I am so tired of dealing with it all.   So if hormone therapy will help with the above and not put me in danger of cancer/heart attack/stroke I am all for it and if it helps with FFA even better-

Hi Minter

Indeed disappointing. How long do you have to wait before your see your neurologist? Fingers crossed they can work together to work out something for you.

Did your Dr have any other suggestions for you in place of HRT?

Gosh Minter-that sucks! If it’s not one thing it’s another. What is the conflict with HRT and your *gulp* aneurysm? Are you on blood thinners?

Hang in there. :/
Hi Minter

I have just read this article about Maca - this might help ease your symptoms in place of HRT:

Minter, I'm so sorry that the doctor could not give you prescribe anything to help with your symptoms.

Hi, I too have just started an estrogen/progesterone program. I always hated the pill and didn't want to do it, but I see a doctor who is very pro-natural and nutrition-based who told me my blood hormone levels were crazy-low. So crazy-low that it's not good for me, though I've just started menopause this year (51). It's only my second day so no difference yet aside from sore breasts. I had hot flashes a lot during August-Sept but they waned a bit these past couple of weeks. This menopause thing is a TRIP. Ten years ago I never ever could have imagined I'd go through all this - I sort of thought I was invincible until age 49 when I started to be thirsty all the time. But that's another story.

Same as you Halfbaked- I never believed or realized how rough this menopause is until it was my time to go through it, also thinking that I was invincible haha- hopefully the estrogen/progesterone will help you out!

Thanks everyone, I am still waiting for the neurologist's secretary to get back to me after calling her every day this week :-/  they only found my very small aneurysm because I was getting very bad stress headaches and an MRI was performed to discover the aneurysm, which wasn't causing the headaches, it was discovered they were/are caused by arthritis and tendonitis in my spine/neck.  Apparently, the neurologist said, almost everybody has tiny little aneurysms like me, it was just by chance because of my headaches that they discovered mine- so it is frustrating that I (most likely) can't have hormone therapy because of it, grrrr.

My gyno didn't really suggest anything else for the menopause symptoms except to try something "natural" so I guess I will keep searching google to find what will help -

Hi Minter

Turmeric in the form of Golden Paste might help with the arthritis and tendinitis - it is good for inflammation - I take it each day either straight on a teaspoon or mixed with yoghurt (better for taste).

It is also good for animals - see the research by Doug English, a vet in Australia.

Thanks Airam-FFA, I have tried tumeric, not for menopause but for my achy arthritis/tendonitis joints in capsule form and got an upset stomach from it every day that I took it :-/   I swear the older I get the more I get every single side effect listed! But it might be a good treatment for someone else, so I am glad you posted about it-

Minter, I would suggest you try Estroven [yes, with a V].  It is an over-the-counter supplement, which actually comes in a few varieties, according to natural additives for sleep, or for mood, etc.  Living in the South, my summers have been almost unbearable with greatly increased hot flashes -- increased in both frequency and intensity.  This past summer was the first time I had tried Estroven, and though it did not eliminate the nuisance, it definitely reduced frequency and intensity.  Also, every winter when we first start heating the house, I usually see a spike in flashes [oh, how I love Spring and Fall!] and will be hoping for an improvement this year on Estroven.

I think it's a necessary defense to believe the best - that one is invincible. I feel fine except for the dry mouth and eyes. I work out, I try to eat well, and yet my hair continues to get patchy. I never knew one could have aneurisms from arthritis and tendinitis.

Take a lot of oils. This from two doctors, one a colleague, one the crazy man I see. Omega 3 and fish oils, oils in nuts, linseed oil etc. ... female hormones are made of fat. The former doctor gave an anecdote about a 51 year-old menopausal woman whose periods came back with eating a lot of oils. Can't hurt might help. I have Omega 3 and fish oil capsules (that cost me a small fortune) and put organic vegan oils on everything I eat. And no I haven't gained weight, not even with menopause (I'm sure my natural hyperactivity helps ; ) ). Very good for the brain too, and as a genetically disposed anxious-depressive person I try to put everything I can into preventing the next episode (they really really suck, worse than FFA, worse than the worst physical ailment...)
Take good care
Hi there....I also suffer with menopausal symptoms including miserabke hot flashes. About three weeks ago I started taking 80 my a day of black cohosh and after about three days of use, my hot flashes have disappeared. I picked it up at Target, their brand. 40 mg easy swallow pills and suggested dose is two a day with food. I take them in the morning along with my B complex and vitamin D. Very inexpensive and works for me. Good luck ;)
