Have you all seen this article yet? http://www.doctorslounge.com/index.php/news/pb/62273

My derm mentioned sunscreen as a possible trigger during our first visit but she wasn't committed to the idea. Anyone else have a doc mention this as a possible link?

Of course, my first reaction was to throw out my sunscreen but I don't even know if:

1) This has been proven?

2) Would it even make a difference?

I would love to hear your thoughts.

I tend to think there may be some merit to this. In the last 15 years we have definitely seen a huge increase of sunscreen in skin care products. My Lancôme foundation has sunscreen in it and My moisterizers all do as well. But I would think we would be seeing more celebrities and tv personalities with FFA because of their constant use of make up.

That's an excellent point.

Very interesting. One thought I had was this: Were these the habits of people BEFORE they got diagnosed or after? It might be that since many of us also get rosacea and face redness that we then tended to use more foundation and sunscreen after diagnosis. So that, perhaps, it's not a cause. But sounds like it is something to consider. And I have used more sunscreen on my face on more recent years. Not when I was younger.

That's a great question. I use sunscreen every day and have since I was in my early 30s. I'm now 40 and started to notice the FFA when I was in my late 30s.

I had patch testing for allergies and I am definitely allergic to fragrance. I had to stop using laundry detergent, soap, lotion with fragrance.

I think that if sun screen were the problem, I would see hair loss in nearly every woman I know because everyone I know uses a lot of sunscreen.  I think some of us may react differently to ingredients, so I would not rule out sunscreen.  I just wonder what the specific ingredient that could cause such a sensitivity would be.

I think the link to rosacea, face redness, eczema, and other skin reactions is a path that might bring more understanding to what causes this disease.

True! Excellent point.

Interesting. Is FFA linked to rosacea, eczema etc? A couple of years ago I was struggling with dry eyes. The opthalmologist said to wash the eyelids with baby shampoo and, in fact, to wash my face with it as he saw signs of rosacea. I've never noticed that but I wash my face with baby shampoo to this day. I have a little eczema around my ring finger that flares up with stress and a steroid cream calms it down. Id be interested to hear if others also have these signs.
I have been second guessing my sunscreen use, though, even before I learned of this study. Did you all hear how it is killing coral reefs? Can't be good. Check out stories by CNBC, TIME Magazine, etc.

I haven't heard that! I will read up on it. Thanks!

I have been very careful and only use the zinc oxide sunscreens these days and not on a daily basis unless on vacation.  Stopped all the retinol creams - read my previous posts and a recent one as mine has stopped - good luck

Hi joy, Do you mean your hair loss has stopped? That's amazing!
