I am starting this discussion for the feelings and experiences of other sufferers towards wigs and hair pieces. I don't need a wig at at the moment, but my instincts are to go (where?) and find out what is available, while it is still obvious what my hair style is like. I hate the idea of wearing a wig, but it looks as if it is inevitable in the long run (barring a miracle cure appearing). At least I don't live in a hot country! One of my concerns is that I have a big head (you may laugh!) and can rarely find a hat that fits. It would be very expensive, I imagine, if I always had to get wigs custom made. At the moment I like the idea of a piece with fringe and bangs. I do get my hair coloured, though, and it does fade over the 9 weeks between colours. There would therefore be a problem with matching. And, as my hair gets thinner, would there be enough left to attach a piece securely?

Ladies thanks very much for your kind words. I would of course much rather have my own hair back instead of wearing wigs no matter how nice it is to be able to change up your looks and have a bit of fun with it. I was struggling to make my hair look smart and acceptable for work so I really didn't have a choice I had to move to supplemental hair. I still hope to save enough hair using the hydroxchloroquine to be able to get away with wearing my hairbands when I don't need to look smart and can go for a casual look. Am off to my local wig salon in a minute to get my lovely Raquel Welch Diamond wig cut and styled... fab and the NHS are paying for half of it... XXX
You look stunning, Debs! What a beautiful woman you are. And thanks for all your good advice and informative posts. I'll have my first appointment at a wig salon on Monday after I've been to the hospital to have a photo taken of my hairline (I agreed to that as it's for teaching purposes).
Any ladies in the South East of England, if you would like a consultation with a very experienced wig salon I can recommend 'Shepperton Wig Company', they are located inside of Halliford Film Studios and make wigs for stage, television and cinema as well as selling synthetic and human hair wigs in name brand wigs. I asked one of the owners, Joanne, what they can do for people with FFA that don't want to wear a wig, she can make you or supply a ready made top hair piece and attach using glue/tape/suction method if your scalp is painful. The salon is very private and behind a 10 foot high brick wall so nobody can see you going in if you feel self conscious (which I did the first visit). There is no obligation to purchase from them and they can see you by appointment and give you excellent advice.
Joanne as well as a wig maker is an experienced hairdresser, she low-lighted and cut my new human hair wig beautifully.

It is nerve racking discussing our hair loss with a stranger but the ladies here are very sympathetic to our situation.
Hi Ammie, you don't need to cut your hair, just pin it up using bobby pins. www.wigsupport.com is a forum of ladies that all wear wigs in the USA, I get all my wig info from them. Also if you check out youtube there are hundreds of women on there that do wig tutorials so you can see how they either pin up their own hair or use a wig cap. I don't use wig caps because I find them tight and prefer to have nothing on my head apart from my wig.
Good luck if you are looking at your supplemental hair options. XXXX
