Hi Shannon

We did the cortizone shots for three months in the spots she had at that time. It worked in growing the hair back in those spots but for her they were very painful. The pain did not end with the shots. Her head was sensitive to the touch for months afterward. It also didn't stop her hair from falling out in new spots. She absolutely refuses to have them again and since her hair just fell out in new area I didn't see the point in pushing her into the shots.

I'm not sure whether you're talking about your son having a headache or scalp pain. My daughter does occasionally complaint about her scalp hurting in active areas. Right now we are using Thymuskin which seems to be keeping it from spreading and we do have little bit of growth. It's all a very slow process though so there's nothing definitive about whether its really working. I just keep hoping something will work.

we went to the best dermatologist (Peter Bjerring) in Denmark (where we live) - and he suggested an alternativ treatment - because we refused to try steroids.
We got an UVB-lamp we had to use once a day in connection with a special cream (Khellin) - sorry, my english is not the best....
The doc said there was ca. 25% chances for the treatment will help - and in our case our son got ALL hair back and until now he is not loosing anything. But of course nowbody can tell whether it was this ligt-therapy or just "nature"/his own body that made hair grow back again.

Annette- what kind of light therapy did you use? There's been a lot of talk recently about Jack's hair, or lack of. At first, I thought it was very upsetting to him, but now I'm seeing a totally different side of him. I love it! I actually might not give it a second thought tonight, the first time in weeks. :)

hey jennifer,
im thinking about not even starting any meds on him. Why put something in his body if its not going to work. But yea my son keeps telling me about his head/hair hurting. in my opinion it has to do with the alopecia...it never hurt him before and it never even came up before..

Hi Shannon,
My son also complains that his head hurts. This all started once his hair came out. Ther dermatologist says it has nothing to do with his AA but then why did it all start at the same time? We do put a steroid liquid on his head but we only put it on the first bald spot we came across. I just cannot see us putting it all over his head without knowing if it's going to work. So far, it hasn't. MD also suggested taking biotin supplements which we have now been taking for almost 3 months, also with no results. I know it can be worse, but it doesn't mean that this isn't bad.

Heyy Lillian,
ty very much for responding. My son's doctor was telling me about some kind of steroid shots. Have you tried it with your daughter?..Also my son comes to me alot and tell me his head hurts and he will itch it and put his head down on me. Has your daughter said anything about her hair or head hurting?..Ughh this breaks my heart. But thank God its not worse.

Hi Shannon
Don't blame yourself that you didn't know earlier. Finding out early wouldn't have done any good. There is very little you can do to do to stop it. I'm trying out different things with my 9 year old but nothing that has shown dramatic results. There is no cure all for everyone but some people have had some success with different treatments. There are some people that has had no luck with any of the treatments. My daughter has had it for 1 year and all I can say is it get easier to cope with. Of course she still has most of her hair with 4 or 5 spots that are for the most part covered up. She knows that she could lose all her hair someday and she seems to accept that.

My son has (AA)...i been really upset cuz i just found out yesterday that he has it..i knew something was wrong with him cuz his hair was getting thinner and thinner. people would tell me all the time "whats wrong with your son". i would say nothing..thinking tthat nothing was really wrong until. i actually noticed it myself. he was tested and now i know it was thinning cuz of the alopecia....i've been very upset with myself cuz i ddint realize it earlier. when i found out yesterday i shaved his whole head bare....and then i realized how bad it was..with all the patches...he is 2 right now..anyone have any suggestions on how to cope? or is it just me over reacting?

This past month, I was giving Mya one drop of World Organic Liqui-Kelp (adult dose is four drops daily) which is a source of Iodine derived from Kelp and now she has a peach fuzz now showing all over her head where it used to be slick. There is no scientific proof I can offer you, but I am trying it out on her and it seems to help.
