You can probably search back and find the original thread, I can't remember exactly just that it didn't work. I think someone posted something about the fact that anything that irritated the skin *could* work temporarily but wasn't a cure. But hey try it for yourself just so you don't have doubts. And washing the hair...doesn't exactly get the smell out LOL it just looks a little better.

Lol i figured the smell would be intolerable. You also have to use it twice a day and it doesn't say if you can wash the head afterward. I'm just curious about it because it will be much cheaper (although much smellier) than the treatment I am currently using for my son. Also, I am curious to know, what were the reasons they discouraged you from using it? It seems to me that the smell is the only drawback and that the study shows it is extremely effective if you are able to stick with it.

We did it for about 5 days and couldn't take the smell. It didn't help us but we didn't give it much time (I asked about it here and people on this board discouraged me from continuing with it).

Has anyone ever tried onion juice as a remedy for alopecia? I found this article on google where onion juice was found to be 86.9% effective in inducing hair growth:
Onion juice (Allium cepa L.), a new topical treatment for alopecia areata.
J Dermatol. 2002 Jun;29(6):343-6.Sharquie KE, Al-Obaidi HK.
Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Iraq.
Alopecia areata is a patchy, non-scarring hair loss condition. Any hair-bearing surface may be involved, and different modalities of treatment have been used to induce hair regrowth. This study was designed to test the effectiveness of topical crude onion juice in the treatment of patchy alopecia areata in comparison with tap water. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group [onion juice treated] consisted of 23 patients, 16 males (69.5%) and 7 females (30.5%). Their ages ranged between 5-42 years with a mean of 22 years. The second group [control; tap-water-treated] consisted of 15 patients, 8 males (53%) and 7 females (46%). Their ages ranged between 3-35 years with a mean of 18.3 years. The two groups were advised to apply the treatment twice daily for two months. Re-growth of terminal coarse hairs started after two weeks of treatment with crude onion juice. At four weeks, hair re-growth was seen in 17 patients (73%), and, at six weeks, the hair re-growth was observed in 20 patients (86.9%) and was significantly higher among males (93%) compared to females (71%). In the tap-water treated-control group, hair re-growth was apparent in only 2 patients (13%) at 8 weeks of treatment with no sex difference. The present study showed that the use of crude onion juice gave significantly higher results with regard to hair re-growth than did tap water, and that it can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata.

hello, i am Cathie, my daughter emma is nearly seven and has been totally hair free for over 18 months. thankfully she is very psitive about the situation but i have no delussions that this will always be the case. She will not wear a wig and only wears a hat for outdoors depending on the weather. her school is very supportive of the situation and any name calling is swiftly nipped in the bud.
we feel her alopecia is due to a peanut allergy to which she was tested for by being fed peanut butter, in less than three weeks her hair began to fall out and just over two months later was totally bald.
I have joined this site for ideas and ways for dealing with any obstacles that may come her way as she grows up as we are quite resigned to the fact she will never get her hair back.
we look forward to any discussions that come our way.
