About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

Way to go on the book LeslieAnn! I'm happy alopecia inspired you to create something that educates people about alopecia. I'm hoping to raise funds for my support group so we can purchase an alopecia library, hopefully we can get your book too. Good job! :)

  • Kate

Hey LeslieAnn, eeekk, yur experience sounds horrible. But you look amazing, so whatever you are now doing is certainl working! Having just gotten my first wig, and getting it used to it, I don't even wan to start to think about all the other hings I may need in the future quite yet! Too much to take! I still have eyebrows and lashes...for now. And not in love with the tattoo idea anyway, but thanks for letting me know that it is not all peachs and cream like the beauticians suggest!
Hope life is treating you well! I visited portlans a few years ago and loved it. A great city to be in! xx
  • Brigitte

Thank you for the post, it is wonderful to meet you LeslieAnn. I have had a brief moment in time with this condition and have learned more about myself than I thought possible, but even through the tears and heart break, like you said, joy and laughter have to prevail.
    Thank you again, Kat

LeslieAnn thanks for the comment, I've recently had an uncontrolled episode!! My daughter went to her Sr. Prom and I took her to my old hair stylist. Well she was getting her hair done and I mentioned that one of the things I missed was going to get my hair done. Well, I just broke down and started to cry..... I'm not usually like that. I think it scared me that after 4 years with dealing with this, I couldn't control my emotions. I really would like to read your book... always looking for tips -- I'm thinking about getting permanent make-up, what do you think about that???
  • Lesley Berry

Hi LeslieAnn thank you for your message, I have 2 other dogs as well. We have something else in common I love to paint too. I have decided not to wear a wig and let the real me shine through.
without the support of my husband and my friends I doubt if I could have been this positive though, but I have never been the type of person to let things get the better of me. I believe in living my life to the full and not letting things rule my life.
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

    Hi LeslieAnn,
Thanks for asking about my daughter. Thankfully she's doing great - much of that I attribute to our attitude of education and CAP as well as our NAAF involvement. She knows she's not alone and feels good about herself. Don't get me wrong, wehave our moments but she's doing really well!

    Hello LeslieAnn,
Thank you for your outrreach! I do not have alopecia myself, my teen age daughter has it. May I ask you if you have hair or are you utilizing a wig? You are a very beautiful woman and I would like to point that out to my daughter who is having a tough time. she is at the patchy stage, although getting a lot patchier lately. she does not want to talk about it what so ever despite my trying to get her involved. thanks again!
    Cathy
  • Melissa

Thanks for asking. I'm about completly bald now. Lost hair just about everywhere. I've had it since I was 15, but always just in patches that grew back.
  • Ev

Hey LeslieAnn, I am from Limerick. I think it is almost 2 hours to get to Kilkenny (bad roads!!). Kilkenny is lovely and the castle is very nice. You know flights to Shannon/Dublin are not that expensive around November or March.
I was driving up north california (on Highway 1) a couple of months ago and i really thought that it was like Ireland and Scotland so I am sure Oregon is even more similar.
  • Gwen

Thanks Leslieann! I will. Hugs, Gwen

    Bonjour LeslieAnn,

Montreal is a beautiful city, indeed. I've lived here for about 2 years, so my French is only so-so.

  • Trina

    Leslie,

Thanks for the comment. Actually I have had au for 10 years so I am pretty good with coping and dealing.. I have my days, but for the most part her knowing that she has me and her dad and the fam has really made me stronger
  • KimB

Yes - just visiting this site and reading the stories of other alopecians is tremendously inspirational. Thanks!
  • Katiebug

Hey! Thanks for your comment! Your hair looks so good! My biggest worry is that if I ever have to get a wig that it will look fake! Where do you get yours from?
  • Lee

Hi Leslie..thank you and I agree. I guess it is possible to look even better than I did. I think I will check out your book ; )
  • Rebecca

  • Antoinette Fernandez

Hi Leslie!! Thank your for your lovely comment! I really apreciate it!!
  • Melissa Hall

Hi my niece Katie has it. She is the greatest! Katie is one of my friends so you can see her pic.
  • Lee

thanks! I have a question. Do you have your own eyelashes or do you wear false ones? I miss them the most : (
  • Donna

    Hi LeslieAnn
Yep it sure is fun going from blonde to brunette, I love having fun with my wigs but also feel fine without them. Alopecia has done all it can to me, but it doesn't bother me anymore, this is who I am now. Eyebrow tattoos, false lashes and gel nails as alopecia got those too lol.
    Hope you are well too?

Hi LeslieAnn! Thanks for your comment...I get my freedom wig tomorrow, will let you know how it is & post some pics soon. It's going to be a darker auburn, closer to my natural colour. I've got to come up with a name for the new wig, won't be as good a name as Ruby though!
  • Eileen

    HI Leslie
Kelly is a spitfire by nature, thank goodness. She has almost a complete head of hair right now, with a few noticeable patches. Most of her hair loss is at the back of the neck, along the hairline.
She waffles between growing out her hair to donate, and wanting to shave it off so she can be like other alopecians, as she says!
So, life is good here right now. She has a big transtion for Sept. as she moves to a diff. elementary building in our school district, so we keep our fingers crossed that it will be smooth
thanks again for asking for her.
  • Gina

hi and thanx for the support....I do have a small toupe like thing that cost 300.00!!!!! and i think its not real hair either...i was so unfamiliar in buying stuff like that the guy sold me a used one, even, but it is cut really short on top which makes me look like i have a mullett!..lol so yeah, I am lookin for somethin with longer hair on top, but cant afford another 300.00$
  • Lise Marie Bordeleau

ty LeslieAnn for the nice welcome....yes me to almost 30 next year... wow how times flies...i had it on and off but never loss in the front..... well thank you very much again for your welcome...very friendly site ... i will like it ...Lise Marie.
  • Lesley Berry

my fav medium is soft pastels but I like acrylics too, I have dabbled a bit with watercolour but I'm not too keen on those they take a little too long to dry. I love to paint seascapes and landscapes. I have done portrait sketches in charcoal too. I'm not a professional, but I have sold a few of my paintings. I do it mainly for pleasure and if other people enjoy my work that pleases me too.
    What medium do you use?
  • Karen Delaney

Hi LeslieAnn, I received a response from my email already with the name of a contact in Anchorage so that is at least closer to me. Again thank you for the info you gave me...hope you're having a good day...Karen
  • Barbara E. P. Cartmel

Hi thanks for your email. As you are aware I think people tend to want to know your business all of the time and it is very annoying. I am surrounded by a very supportive family and that has helped a great deal. My husband has chron's disease and as he told me once he would rather have no hair than having to deal with his disease!! As it says in your comments - if your hair falls out keep dancing how true it is!! Barbara
  • cate

    hi LeslieAnn!

thsnk you so much for telling me about Beauti-Full-Brows! i was just at the website, and i'm so excited! i've been struggling for so long, trying to find a better option than having them tattooed on. i hate drawing them on...i can never go anywhere at a moment's notice, and they always end up being completely uneven, which makes me self-conscious of them. especially since i don't wear a wig, so there's nothing to take attention away from my eyebrows.

thanks again for the info...i'm going to order some today...now all i have to do is choose! :-D
  • Ev

Hey I dont know about support groups, although I know there is another girl from Dublin on Alopecia world and there are a few other websites for alopecia (alopecia ireland - I think)..I only got AA once I left Ireland!!!
  • Roger

    Hi LeslieAnn.

Hope youre doing fine. Have you been to a conference before?

    Roger.
  • Catharina

Hej! OK I will fix it! LoveCatharina
  • wendyrayburn

They say it will never come back .Im not really worried about it. Everybody is used to my bald head IM USED TO MY BALD HEAD.
  • Amanda

Yes, I did get the email and in fact I went to pre-order a copy but all it accepts is paypal. Is that true? I had identity theft with my paypal acct so don't have one anymore. I may have to wait until it comes out. I am very excited to read it!
  • Samantha

Thanks about the eyebrows. I will definitely check them out!
