I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Thanks for the encouragement!! -- Still feel very naked -- I'm trying to make myself sit outside on my back deck and sun my head (God it is sooooooooo white!! hahah) But the Warmth feels so goooooood!! What a great looking couple!! ----------- Tori
Oh thanks! It’s identical to my hair color. It’s weird because it’s a Revlon wig. Nothing special ordered. I wanted to tell you that my crazy husband shaved my head last night. We got a laugh because when I put my stalking hat on it stuck to my head like Velcro. It was pretty hilarious. I’m thankful I don’t have to go in public like this but it feels much better. It looks very clean. We also had a laugh because the first shaving to just get it short enough for another shorter go around made me look like a drunk person tried to give me a Mohawk. My cat had her eyes glued to me this morning when she’d usually be snoozing while I was getting ready for work. Anyway, I wouldn’t have gotten the nerve to do this if I hadn’t seen you and all of the other pretty ladies on here with shaved or naturally bald heads.
Thank you for the welcoming, I am really glad I found this place. You and RJ are def a blessing to all of us and I'm so glad you started this site for all of us out here so that we can support each other. Thanks again.
I seem to have far fewer sweat glands than others....according to a doc I know...ectodermal dysplasia? Prob related to alopecia, though I don't know how. Not sure; but I tend to heat up in temps where other distance runners would still be comfortable, so my shirt usually comes off fairly early in races in order for me not to overheat and "blow up" (I've gotten very interested in marathon running (but race all distances)). So I'm a running advertisment for alopecia universalis (though race organizers insist that I keep my shorts on on pain of expulsion!).
Congrats on the engagement! He sounds like a really nice guy.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Cheryl. I can't believe I just discovered this site. And you and RJ are both from Montreal -- fantastic! It's a wonderful thing you've started here!
Cheryl this website is SO great. Thanks so much for all the work you do to keep this going for everyone. You are truly changing people's lives. Thank you!
Hi Cheryl, thank you for the welcome. I am amazed so far at the response I have received in just one day. I am looking forward to getting to know many more in the days ahead. This is such a good thing you are doing and such a vital part of coping and recovery. Thank you!
Cheryl..Hello..Im writing about a new member named Erin..Under new members from Miami Florida..She says she has been using "Endroncrine Booster" and swears that is what keeps her hair there..I was wondering,Have you ever heard of such a thing, and if so,is it worth a look..Sorry to bother you..I know you must be swamped..Thanks again for being a co-founder of this site..Its long over-due,so good for you..Bob
Cheryl,
I just want to say Thank You for having the vision of putting this website together...I see how much this site has grown since I signed up, the numbers will hit 900 soon! :) Keep doing your thing, pushing self acceptance and positive energy! Thank You so much for giving us a place to call home. ;)
~Yvonne
Thank you for the greeting my only wish is that i had known about this when i found my first bald patch this time round as this loss has been the hardest for me to deal with.
Wow Cheryl what a beautiful site. I have 38 yrs of AU to share with others. Thank you for making that possible. Looking forward to sharing my life with you. People like you make such a difference in life.
Unfortunately, I can't make the conference this year... I'm taking a trip at the beginning of next month and I don't have enough time off from work. :( I will start planning for next year's conference as soon as they send the dates.
Hi Cheryl! Thank you for the very warm welcome. You are beautiful by the way!! Please check out my YouTube channel when you get the chance and leave me a comment! Thanks! All the best - Elline Surianello, founder of LeMetric Hair Center.

thanks for that,it seems like a really good site and couldnt have found me at a better time Ben come home from school in tears today due to people picking on him that is very unlike him so I have just been looking through it all and seems great x
Hi, nice to be so warmly welcomed...great site..by the way and very easy to use....I've already found that the contact with others like myself to be strangley comforting...(guess seein' as we're all dealin' with the same thing to one degree or another)...thanx again
I'm sorry Cheryl...what conference?...(and I doubt it) as I live in Canada..and the states is a long way from the Foothills in Alberta......but yeah it is kinda neat to know I'm not dealing with this alone....and that (of course), as bad as mine is, there is people out there with bigger issuses, and maybe I can help with dealin' with esteem issues, or insight as I have no prob. with esteem, (I think rather highly of myself) LOl...anyway off to work have a GREAT day.....MIkey
Awwww... Cheryl - I just read the post you put up regarding 'going topless'. It still touches me that things I take for granted (example - you being a drop dead gorgeous bald black woman) still takes some reminding for you. Today at lunch you mentioned some very touching things to me regarding what you have learned from your friends. I would need a day to itemize the effect you have had and continue to have on my life. I have learned and continue to learn courage through you. Sincerity. Acceptance. Listening (one of your best qualities)... I am blessed to have you in my life and love you deeply. I believe our friendship is as deep as it is, thanks to alopecia. We have grown together through many situations brought about by alopecia, hair, assumptions people have, etc. From styling your wigs to throwing them aside to go 'topless'. You are an incredible blessing in my life and I hope my ranting has made sense. I love you Carvery. HUGE ... HUGE hug. xoxoxoxo
XOXO. Yes, I will be going to the conference. I just bought my ticket. So reneging is out of the question. I can't wait to see you again and to meet your very lucky heartthrob!
After regrowth, my hair fell again and now I am trying to experient with regrowing natural locks (I previously used perms). I am not sure if I like it as much as I like the baldness. I sort of want to shave it but this may the only time to be natural. I'll see.
Hi Cheryl thanks for your note. You look so great without hair. You are very pretty - if I looked like that I would not wear my wig either!! I was thinking the other day what would I do if my hair came back - I have a feeling I probably would be disappointed and end up shaving my head! I said this before but the people who have aloepecia have beautiful smooth skin it is amazing. Take care, have a nice day, Barbara

No conference for me; I'm in a pre-med program; no time to shit. Altho I am competing in the Ottawa marathon this weekend.
Other than that, my grip on reality would greatly benefit from a boost of NAAF conference; how many years in a row now have I missed?
BTW, love you as always.
How's Weezy? Send her my love!
