hey Im Lee! I had AU since Oct '07, don't like it but I am dealing! I tried everything...nothing is working...so I gave up and I'm doing things that make me happy ; ) I love talking to people about this because it makes me feel like I'm not alone. I live in NYC and I LOVE music..its my life! I'm in a band (website: http://www.myspace.com/betterthanstatic) where I sing and play guitar. I guess thats me in a nutshell ; )
Update...moved to Arlingon, VA...not in a band anymore ; ( and I have asthma now...so, trying to deal with that the best I can. Would take alopecia over asthma ANY DAY!
Haha, i'm sorry that wasn't very specific! There is a bill in the NY State Assembly right now that would require insurance companies to cover or help to cover the cost of wigs. we are trying to get someone from every area of NYS to email their assembly person and say they want them to support the bill. We have an email already written up that you can just paste your name into and write your story with and just send out. i'm actually in the UK right now but will be getting these things together very soon. if you send me your email address then i can add you to the list.
thanks!
Yes. My wife's name is Carol. But not the Carol on this website, that is another Carol.
My wife is bald with au, and she is a wonderful and beautiful lady I might add. As I am sure you are also.
Thanks for the comment on the pic. We all are beautiful in different ways. This condition teaches you that beauty is more then what you see in the mirror it is sometimes the things that you can't see that make you beautiful.
Lee I just found out how to view the comments on my photos!!! To answer your question, the blonde wig I am wearing in the LA photo is a Raquel Welch wig style "masquerade" in R29S. I have it pulled back into a pony and instead of an elastic I am using a RW pony wrap (its like a synthetic hair scrunchie with little braids and crazy hair all around it) I use those for pony tails because the fringe on them helps camouflage the nape hairline and look more natural.
Hi Lee...I'm just to the south of you here in Philly. You know, the 6th Borough of NY! Just happened across your profile and have a few thoughts: most importantly, you're a beautiful woman and you've embarked upon a journey which, although you didn't ask for, has the potential to help both reveal and cultivate the depth of your strength and character. I think you know all this, but hopefully it feels good to hear it. Second, you're beautiful, totally, so fucking own it! :) And third, would love to know more about what kinds of music you like and your band plays. Music is an abiding passion of mine (check my page for more on that!) so I was struck when reading about your love of music. Anyway, look fwd to hearing back from you... :)
Hi Lee,
Are you going to the Bald Girls Do Lunch dinner on Friday night? I'm going to be there. I live in NH, but will be in NYC for the next three days. Call my cell if you want to meet or get info on the dinner in Ossining.

Hi Lee,
I'm arriving today! I'm not sure if I'll have email access at the hotel, but you can call my cell anytime today, tomorrow or Friday. I have time this afternoon before 5, tomorrow afternoon between 3 and 5 and also on Friday morning in case you want to meet. My cell number is 603-682-8560.
Hi! I know, I miss my eyelashes the most, too.
I use makeup that lets me look like I have eyelashes, but when I go out on a date or go to a party I wear false ones.
Hi Lee,
Yes, I have lots of makeup tips in the book and teach you how to make your eyes look like you have eyelashes, info about eyebrows and also talk about permanent makeup. I wear bottom lashes sometimes but because it's a hassle, I usually just use makeup on the bottom. I had permanent eyeliner and eyebrows, but it was excruciatingly painful, and it faded rather quickly -- and I didn't like the looks of the eyebrows. Not real looking. Also I have scarring in my eyebrow area from the needles, and -- the technician actually got the needle in my eye. There's an ink spot there, my eye doctor noticed it! Talk about PAIN!
Great, Lee -- tell me how you like the book! Did you get past PayPal? Just ignore it and don't sign in -- click "continue." Lots of people have trouble with that so don't feel like the Lone Stranger.
I liked the comment you made on the post. Wearing a wig is not hiding who you are. We all have a right to do what most makes us comfortable. As long as they sell hair i am going to wear it. I do not like a bald head for myself and dont think I will ever.
Well Lee I am not going out in public bald either. I dont have the hot hair issues because I dont wear wigs. Wigs are so hot in the summer. I have hair bonded to my head so it gets done every two months and that is about the only time I am bald .
they do it at some salons and charge god awful amounts of money like 1200.00 and it last 6 months. I do it at home for free.... I learned to do it some years ago before it was popular and have been doing it every since. It keeps me from dealing with the hot wig situation and have to worry about it coming if in the wind.
its a little hard to explain. It is similar to a weave but because I dont have the hair to bond it to I have to take an additional step. I buy hair that is on a track and then it is a little process. It does hold for about 2 months depends on how much curling and tugging I do. If I swim then I just put a cap on it. Hopes that answers your questions.
lee,
No it does not hurt or burn. I have no problems at all. Just apply it and leave it. My head itches sometimes but that is normally around the time I need to wash it.
Also, do you draw your eyebrows on or are they permanent. Since my AU I have had a tough time with my eyebrows and was thinking about getting them permanently tattooed on. Your's look so natural!
Hey Lee I am a fellow New Yorker/ Alopecian, So I figured say hi and get to know you a little. Its always good to know that your not alone. Talk to you soon.
Hi Lee,
I noticed you have a wig from Freedom Wigs and it really looks great!! I'm looking into getting one right now, and I just wanted to see what your experience has been with it. I want to get a long hair wig, but I have a short one right now because it's so much more comfortable...but I've only had sythetice wigs.
I haven't ordered it yet. I'm getting information sent to me, and then I'll make my first appointment. I want to get a long one too, but all the long wigs i've had have made me really hot and they get so knotted in the back...I have to constantly be brushing it. And when I try to put them in a pony tail, it just looks so unnatural. So, my short one has been the best for me, and I love it, so I wouldn't mind getting a short one again, but I'd rather have a long one. Have u run into any of those problems??
Did you get my last message?? I got an email that it was rejected because your email address doesn't exist. I was like, what?! It had an attachment to it, so maybe it was just a clever virus. So just let me know that you got my last message OK. It was in response to your latest ww result.
Aw..thanks! =) I do love my short hair too, and I keep going back and fourth because sometimes I miss having long hair, but then the short hair is so comfy. But your info is VERY helpful because my main concern was the long hair getting knotted and whether or not I'd be able to put it in a pony tail. So, thanks SO MUCH for all your help!!! =)
Thanks for the tips. I am really nervous about getting them so I am going to go to a couple of places and check out their work. I absolutely hate having to draw them on every morning! Such a pain...I figure if I have to deal with having AU I might as well lessen my getting ready time as much as I can =)
Hey, how are you? I was diagnosed with aa about a year ago, and it's been falling out pretty slowly, but I'm gonna have to start looking into wigs very soon! Yours looks so great! Also, I feel the same way as you, I definitely feel like I need to hide it for right now... This may sound dumb but I feel like my hair was a part of who I was. I don't even like talking about it with my family. Well, hope you're doing well and hope to hear from you soon!

Hi Lee! Hope your weekend is going well. So last weekend I bought an eyebrow kit that had eyebrow stencils in it. I love them!! It is nice to have guide and not have to draw my eyebrows on by freehand!
Thanks for accepting the friend request.
so it's a vac wig, well it looks great!! I met the lady for the midwest Karen last year when I was pretty close to needing one. As you can see I have had about 90% regrowth but has started thinning out so not sure what the future holds for me.
I do have a few questions that I sisn't ask before becasue I wasn't sure if i would get a honest answer because she sells them and that wouldn't help her.
But one how comfortable are they? Do they get super hot just with daily activity not working out or anything like that. How easy is it to style? I got a real hair reg wig and it was so hard to style right and so bulky. Do they make them in your hair texture and thickness?
Don't mean to overload you with questions but wanted to know what to expect if I every need one.
Are they like I've read so much better then a reg wig?
Oh thank you, I have asked a few people and wanted a honest answer. The last person I asked said vacuums were so very hot, but she works and sells regular wigs. I'm sure that there are pros ans cons with both but far less with vacuums They look so real and beautiful give me hope if I go AU that there is something out there that will let me feel secure in, also what is the price range?
Thanks for the info. I think that I would get a vacuum wig. I spent over a $1000.00 for a human hair wig not custom at all and was so unhappy. I think your right I've heard they are the best to having your own hair back.
Hi Lee how is things going with your AU? I have had it for a long time. dealing with it is hard. I am fully bald with eye brow growing back as we speak. I took a new approch on it to live life to the fullest and to be very healthy. I work out everyday and eat the wright foods. this seems to be helping alot. Talk to you soon
