I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
hi cheryi......
thanks for the welcome!
see i told you and r.j in louisville that i would join....in total of 3 days in louisville i took over 2,500 pictures......i was so sad to leave......
CHERYL, HELLO I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS FIRST, I WANT TO START A SUPPORT GROUP IN MY LOCAL AREA. CAN I START AN NON FORMAL GROUP WITH OUT GETTING NAAFS APPROVAL? OR DO I HAVE TO GO THRU THE APPLICATION PROCESS? TELL ME WHATS INVOLED SO I CAN GET THIS GOING. I KNOW ABOUT 15 PEOPLE HERE IN MY TOWN MOST OF THEM DO NOT HAVE TRANSPORTATION, MONEY OR THE MEANS TO GO TO FAYETTEVILLE TO THE GROUP. IT WOULD BE BENIFICAL TO START ONE HERE IN LUMBERTON. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
o thanks- i really would like to come to it!
i am really exicited because in a couple minutes we are going out to eat and for the first time out in public i am wearing no wig! :)
Thank you Cheryl for the warm invitation. I was telling a friend of mine recently that you can come on to a site and just sit there and no one comes by to drop you a line. It feel so good when someone notices you re here and appreciate you enough to come by and drop you a line. So many people on the site and you just dont know how to reach out to them.
Thanks for the welcome Cheryl, I think this is a wonderful group you've created. I look forward to being part of this group, growing in acceptance of my baldness
Thank you for the warm welcome Cheryl. Your section entitled Surrender is soooo incredibly powerful and really touched and inspired me! You truly are a wonderful inspiration to me already and I thank you for that. Reading your words really brightened my day and outlook. Thank you kindly.
Hi Cheryl,
I want to tell you what a blessing this has been for me to be invited to this Website. I'm so thankful you and RJ created Alopecia World. I have been able to meet Alopecians in Arizona and make new friends. I went to my first NAAF conference 2 years ago in Minnesota. My sister was able to go with me and I remember meeting you there. A big group of us had gone to lunch together....it was a time in my life I will never forget. I have had AA and AU in the last few years, so most of my life. I hit the big 50 last year......it's been a long journey. It's great to have a positive and encouraging place to support others who understand what life is like with Alopecia.
Thanks and God Bless,
Nancy
hello Cheryl..thanks for the warm welcome..being here feel great my alopecia was cancer related ...I just dont know which was worst losing my hair or having the bilateral mastectomy and no reconstruction..my journey has really given me a different outlook and prespective on life.."one day at a time" sounds cliche but is how i live.

I'm doing fine! Last night, Zach took my sister and I to the movies. We went to see "Disaster Movie". It was hillarious. There were several people giving us all weird looks, but I managed to ignore it. My sister, Terri, jumped on some of her friends for talking about me, and Zach did the same. But after it was all over, he stayed at my house for quite a while. I was pretty excited to know for sure that he can see past my alopecia. He tells me all of the time how beautiful I am and how perfect I am in his eyes. I can honestly say, that even with my young age, I truly understand exactly what love is, what it means, and how it feels. Thank you so, so very much for all of your support and advice! You truly are my idol!
Love always,
CryssieLee Brown

Thanks for your comment Cheryl, I have been living with this for a long time and its nice to find a community like alopeciaworld. Now I can comunicate with people that identify with...
For sure, this is a unique concept to bind people. I, very sincerely appreciate the effort behind such a professional site. And you guys decided to make use of Web 2.0, where people contribute to the content !! Wow, am sure one of you co-founders is a techie :-]btw: thanks for the add.
Thanks for the welcome. And thanks for the support and creating this website. I am finally coming to terms with my alopecia after many years. My 17 year old daughter is my inspiration. She is very encouraging. She is doing her best to convince me to go bald because she thinks I have a cute head.
I am finding it hard to do right now. I am thinking about it though. Some days I feel confident and other days I am not so sure. I think it is more me than anything else. But next summer is looking good. ummer.
Cheryl, Thank you for your comments on my latest blog. Yes, I do keep rubbing my head. I also now want to start dressing a bit better (lol). You and RJ, by establishing this community, have made everything so much easier for me. As you well know, alopecia for anyone can be rough going. Your kindess makes me fell accepted. Thanks again
Cool. I am really excited about it. I was just featured on a local television show here in NC singing and talking up the film. The response has been great. It is an exciting time in my life. Who knew Alopecia could be the catalyst for empowerment in so many ways. After the pain, came empowerment. How cool is that?! Peace out.
Dear Cheryl:
Well....it feels good to finally jump in and get started with talking to others. Thanks for the warm welcome!
