About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

Hi, LeslieAnn! We are fine and had a beautiful day in Bavaria. I think that I am doing this correctly, I have never been part of a chat/support group before and don't really know where to begin. I just scrolled up and saw your info...I will definitely look into your book. I think my husband may need to read it more than me. I am becoming comfortable with my bald head but he still thinks that there is something I should do to make things change. He loves me but he thinks that I have something to do with this hairloss (if only I was that powerful, I would put it back in all the right places). Anyway, thanks for the welcome.

    Hi leslieAnn,
    Thanks for the add :)
I have read your profile, I am going to find your book this week-end, it sounds really interesting because right now I feel this is the worst trial I have been faced with my whole life.
I just finished my teachers aid course in hopes to work in September as a teacher's assistant, but I feel that wont happen with the way I look, its scary i guess because i'm afraid of folks talking behind me .
I'm glad I found this site

Have a wonderful day and thanks for listening :)

Hi LeslieAnn. Thanks for the welcome. I was diagnosed with alopecia areata in January this year. It has been very difficult. I was always so obsessed with getting my hair done and how it looked...and then to find out I was losing it was just too much! I didn't go out much for months. I just wanted to hide in my house. I thought everyone could see it. It started with a quarter sized spot on the left side and quickly turned into more like 4 quarters! About a month later I saw another dime sized one on the top of my head and then another on the back. Now I see small spots all over the back. The one on top has started growing back and the one on the side is filling in. I seem to have thinned a little all over my head. The nape is really thin! I used to wear my hair clipped up every day. Do you think this could have something to do with it? The spots are all in areas that would have been pulled at by the clip. But then I've also had a lot of stress and my scalp was aching...so I don't know. I think its great that you've written a book about your experience! I'll have to find it and read it.

    thank you.
    My friend never discusses this.
2 of her oldest and dearest friends knew and now she just told me (she is 60.
She does not seem open to conversation.
I knwo she is depressed due to this.
While she has been married twice and has 2 children, she did mention her very poor choices in men due to this. (end of conversation)
Any suggestions on how to bring up the topic of your book.

    thanks, Jacqui

Hello....Thank your interest in my profile .. I do not know English, and sometimes can not quite grasp the meaning of the writing. One thing I realized - you wrote a wonderful book you want. It is a pity that this book is not in Russian ..

Hi Leslie! Just checking out your pictures - (gorgeous!) and loving your book! Thank you! It's full of everything I need to hear. I'm at the Broadmoor Hotel with my hubby and actually went without my wig for a short while. Feels weird - people stare and I just know they are wondering if my cancer is in remission? :) Love to be able to tattoo ALOPECIA GIRL on the back of my head. :_) Take care - have a great weekend! Yours, Rebecca

Hello, LeslieAnn. I'm new to this site but have found it very refreshing. I've had vairous stages of alopecia for over 35 years and feel I handle it very well. I've never heard of your book but may check it out.
  • E Ski

Thank you so much! I am doing great, how are you?
Congrats on all of your successes on your book--I actually do own it and my mom and I have read it. Alternative medicine has been great for me... a long road of a couple years, but I have hair everywhere now. Pretty unbelievable. Just have to pray that it's not a fluke and will stay with me :)
Thanks again and hope you have a good week!

    Hi LeslieAnn,
My day wasn't so great (thanks for asking), but this evening I'm feeling better thanks to the lovely people here on AW. I think it always helps to vent and know chances are someone will "get it." How great you wrote a book, I'll definitely check it out. Congratulations on the awards. Thanks again, and I hope you have a really good day tomorrow. BTW -- love the photos!

    Hi Leslie,

Thanks for your note. Yes, I have your book. Paid a pretty penny for it given I'm in Canada (shipping, etc.) but it was worth it. Wish it was in my local Vancouver Public Library. There just aren't enough resources. It has over 2 million items but only 2 books on alopecia. I found your book helpful and I thank you for writing it.
  • Djuna

    Hi LeslieAnn,

Funny you should be the first one to greet me on this site. I just finished your book a few days ago. It's been a long time since I've laughed that hard. And was able to laugh and cry about this condition all at the same time. I've had AA for many years and it has now progressed to AU. It feels a little bit like starting all over again with excepting it. But your book was a great help and has many great tips. Thanks for that. Thinking about a wig for the first time. And actually having fun picking out eyebrows;-)

Hi Leslie, I am doing good. I have Scarring Alopecia and have had it for 12 years. After years of hats and braids, and various products to mask the hair loss I decided yesterday that I would shave my head. I do not wear wigs, so this is a big step. I plan to travel to Florida this weekend and have my sister do the honors. I have read some interesting comments on your page and will look further into your book. Anything that will make me laugh will be needed. Thanks for the 'welcome hello'.
  • Sarah Eisenhardt

    Hi Lesslie,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I can't wait to read your book. My son is only 5 so I'm not sure it is for him, my neighbor however, is almost 30 and she also has aa her aa is a bit unusual because she lost a large spot of hair on her head and both eyebrows but its not close to au. anyway i look foreward to chatting and finding more support for my son. take care,
    sarah

Thanks for the welcome hello. I actually just discovered this site. My business partner and I are starting a blog related to "all thing hair" called Bad Hair Beautiful. We hve not launched yet still gathering content and various information. I have had Alopecia for appx. 6 years and my partner Stacy as born with incredibly baby fine hair. We wanted to create a blog site that would be informative and give true emotional support to woman.

I would love any input or comments from you. I notice you have written a book. Would you be open to having it feaured on our blog?
  • RobynCS

    Hi Leslie,

Good to see you on here. I have your book on my nightstand and it has been soooo helpful esp. when i least expect it. Great to revisit sections of it. My HS kids have friends in and out of the house all the time and they are wondering why Cameron's mom wears beanie caps in this heat....maybe it's time we tell more people. idk.

Hope you are well. What part of the country are you in? ttyl

Hi LeslieAnn, thanks for the warm welcome. I have had aa since I was 7 but have been almost symptom free for 25 years until recently so I am just coming to terms with being an adult with alopecia. It looks like this is a great community website and it has already inspired me to come to terms with having alopecia. Your book sounds really great.
  • Nicky

I am doing fine. Thank you! I am getting the hang of it. I am learning more and more things everyday. How are you? Next time I am at Barns In Noble I will get your book. I already read a book about alopecia called The Girl With No Hair. It inspired me to start writing about my feelings.
  • Kimberly O'Donnell

I am very good today. Thanks for asking. I just had my first doctors visit since I have been diagnosed. I actually had some hair growth. I also told my friends about my disease today and quit trying to cover it up. It felt good. Sounds like you have a great book I need to read!

    Hi Leslie Ann,
Thank you for my welcome message. I have had alopecia universalis for 25 years and until recently didn't know these sites existed. It is so nice to know there are lots of ladies out there, not just me.

I am desperately searching for posts on cyber and vital hair wigs, I have a freedom one at the moment but have recently struggled wearing it due to the heat, so I am looking for lighter alternatives, also for ones that haven't got a hard rim all of the way around.

I am just going to see if I can find your book on amazon :-)

Thanks again for your welcome message

I am good, thanks. I was looking at your pictures and your hair is beautiful. Where did you get it? What kind is it? It looks so natural!! Also your eyes and eyebrows look very natural too. I would like to get some tips. I will have to look for your book.
