I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
Hi Leslie Ann, Thanks for the welcome. I am struggling so much with this diagnosis. So much scares me but the cost of a good replacement for the rest of my life is what currently has me down the most. I don't have the same diagnosis as you but rather Androgenetic alopecia. This is a diffuse thinning of your entire scalp but particularly on the top. Does your book have anything in it that I may be able to relate with?
Hi - we are well, brookes hair is thinning a lot now and is going to start wearing her dude rags to school - she had show and tell today and made the class pic which one she should wear - saw you have written a book - think I will get that for her :) how about yourself :)
Hi Leslie Ann, I recently received your book as a gift and I absolutley loved it! Thanks for all the tips, funny stories, and resources for finding makeup, wigs and such. I also love the cover. Great choice!
Michelle
I met you and bought your book at marchs' alopecia support group in Lake oswego- you also welcomed me to AW. I havent made any other friends yet- I dont know how it works, really...do people read yourcomments and then decide if they want to be your friend?
I couldnt go to Aprils meeting because I had an operation and am recovering very well. Hopefully i will be able to get to the one in May
We are taking it one day at a time. She has one spot right now that we are treating and hoping will not turn into more spots. It is just so difficult to constantly fear the next spot coming or turning into complete hair loss. At this point I have been trying not to focus on the worst case scenario but is that just avoiding the inevitable? I'm probably in denial but isn't it true that for many people it can just be a few spots that end up going away and possibly never coming back? Reading this site has been heartbreaking for me so not sure I want to share it with her at this point. I have been trying to teach her to live for today and try not to think about what could end up happening. Hopefully that's the right approach. Your book sounds awesome. You are an inspiration and wonderful example of how you can live a fulfilling successful life in spite of this frustrating condition. Thanks for responding.
hi,thank you for your comment. My english is not so good but I'll try.I saw your pictures, did you write a book? I am very curious,it looks interesting. Found Aworld by accident on the internet, feels good to know that I'm not alone... Greetz
Hi Leslie! Thank you so much for your comment! I'm doing great. How are you? I looked up your book and I am so excited to read it. It is so amazing to know that there are people out there like you who are there to offer their support. :)
lol!! that's a nice way to look at it. I wish I could be as open as you are about my condition. I feel it will help me to reach out to other women out there in India who are having alopecia.BTW, u look stunning in all your pictures :)
Hello LeslieAnn, I've been wanting to ask you about Brenda Kay's up in Portland. Have you ever purchased a custom wig from her that you were able to wear pulled up into a loose knot in the back and still have it look relatively natural at the hairline? Or do you know of a wig that can be worn that way? I miss wearing my 'hair' off my neck the most. The wig I have now looks ok in the front but looks like a a wig in the back when I pull it loosely off my neck. Is there such a wig? I also enjoyed your book very much. It was such a gift to be able to have some of my concerns and questions addressed. Thank you for getting us out there. I'm almost ready to spend my vacation this year in Portland just so I can see what Brenda Kay has available. I just would be much more comfortable being able to find a really good wig business down here. You would think someone could recommend a salon in San Francisco at least. Wig (human/custom) shopping is much more involved than I had thought it would be. It's too much money to make mistakes. Any help you might give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Judy
Leslie Ann just read about yourself and seen details about your book! I'm going to order it through amazon, I find it amazing now that so many provoke have gone through the same feelings as myself with this condition. If you think about it 30 yrs ago no one could really tell you anything about it! X
After reading your blog I ordered your book from Amazon. I didn't put it down until I finished. It was great to learn that my phases/stages/emotions/reactions are all normal. You would think after 20yrs of AA I would understand it more, but there are days when it still beats me. Thanks for a great, easy to read book.
How are you? I can't believe it's been 5 months since I've been on this site! I wanted to let you know that I told the woman I get my wigs from about your book since she has a table of books and other literature, mostly relating to cancer, in her shop. She bought one for the store and gave me one as a gift! I read it in 2 days and found myself on nearly every page. It's a great book and I love it! Thank you for writing it.
Hi LeslieAnn, we got your book last week - I gave it to my daughter Brooke (8) and it has not left her side - she has even taken it to school for show and tell and asked her teacher fort permission to do as a home reader instead of the school Books :)
Hello Ann,
Thanks fir the welcome. I enjoyed reading your blog and I am excited to read your book. Hope you are doing well out there in Portland. I let you know how I enjoyed your book. Downloading it to my nook today.
Thank you for your interesting page. I have had AA for maybe five months so it is all pretty new to me. I am feeling rather lucky as although the patch is getting larger, there is also new hair growth. I am keeping optimistic and not too worried at this stage but enjoy the contact I am having from this website. Your book sounds interesting and if my condition deteriorates then I would like to purchase your book to gain information from other sufferers. Thank you again.
Thanks for the warm welcome. Im well, thanks hope you are too. I was diagnosed with AA about 3 years ago. It started with a few patches that would grow back, now it seems I'm losing it all slowly. It's difficult to accept and frustrating. Then, I see all of the brave women and men on this site and I'm inspired! I'm looking forward to purchasing a copy of "If your hair falls out, keep dancing!"
Thank you for the warm welcome. Im doing well, taking things day by day. Hope you are well. I was diagnosed with AA about 3 years ago ann it started out with patches that would grow back. Now it seems I'm losing it all slowly. It's difficult and frustrating to face AA alone. I am grateful I found this site with so many inspirational people, including yourself. I look forward to reading your book!
Leslie, Thank you so much for the welcome. It is so kind of you. I have AU diagnosed when I was 2. I don't remember it but my mom told me. She said my hair started coming out when I was 2 and it was completely gone by age 4. I am so glad I found this sight. I really don't discuss my condition with anyone so I find this site very helpful. It also helps me to know that I am not alone and I want to learn how others cope, what products they use, and what kind of systems they wear. I am looking for an alternative to the systems I have now. They start off looking great but wear down very quickly and they are really expensive.
I don't have the kind of money I use to so I really need to find a more economical alternative although I don't want to sacrifice quality. My cake and eat it too so to speak.
You look fabulous and your hair is simply exquisite. I would really like to get feedback from you on your experiences, everything from products to relationships. I don't know anyone personally that has any form of alopecia so hearing all the feedback from here really helps!
Again, thank you for your welcome. It is so greatly appreciated. Stephanie
Hey Leslie just saw your book won TWO NATIONAL AWARDS: I just wanted to Congratulate you on your Book... i don't get on here much so i'm behind a lil lol... but I am going to be buying your book ASAP.. thank you so much for writing a book so informative. it really does help and helps people understand about alopecia.. just read that comment you wrote about the fear of the wind blowing off your wig that's me all the way lol i worry non stop.. and i'm so greatful to have the support of my b/f ...JUST WANTED TO SAY THANKS AGAIN LESLIE
i will let you know just ordered my book lastnight so i'm excited to get it... and ya i'm a huge animal lover don't have children and this is our family and it gives my 2 yr old niece cousins to play with when she comes over lol
im looking foward to reading your book! i just purchased it! i think what you do is wonderful and inspiring! i too love writing and art but sometimes because of things that happen in relation to health and conditions lack inspiration and motivation, if you ever need anything you can count on me. :) looking foward to see how you have managed through your work!
Dear Leslie Ann, I read your book review... wow! I am soon going to buy a copy of "Keep Dancing"! Thank you so much for doing what you are doing! You must have touched and (definitely) changed the lives of so many people (rather, changed the way they look at life) and I am going to be one of them! I thank God with all my heart and soul for bringing people like you to this world and pray that you keep growing and glowing and have all the happiness in the world!
LeslieAnn, Thanks for your hello. I'm pretty new to all this so it's nice to hear from someone. I'm going to look for your book. Have a great day! Stephanie
Hi Leslie Ann, I'm doing great today. My in laws are in town and were having a fun filled day in Las Vegas. How are you? I can't wait to read your book :) I didn't know there were any books out there about alopecia. I've always wanted to write one but don't know how to go about doing it.
LeslieAnn, thank you for the welcome. All is good. I'm just waiting to see how much hair I'll be losing this time around. Still working my way through this site. I look forward to reading your book. You are a beautiful lady!
Hello Leslie, Thankyou for welcoming me to the site. I look forward to communicating with other women who suffer with alopecia in particular those suffering from Fibrosing Alopecia. Let me know about your book. Yours, Chris.
Hi LeslieAnn, thank you for the welcome, really looking forward to read your book!! It is so great to find people who understands what we go through. I have had AA since I was 17 years, and the first time, I lost a whole year of my life, because I just couldn't face it. Life goes on and I'm doing a lot better!!
Thank your for the welcome. So, I am very knew to all of this, and read on your page that you have written a book. Considering I used youtube.com for basic and preliminary tips for wearing a head scarf and how to draw an eyebrow, I look forward to obtaining and reading your book. Thank you.

I can't wait to check out your book. My friend Susan Auten recently published an e-book, YA romance/coming of age about a girl with alopecia. It is titled "Becoming Bailey". Her little girl has AA and she interviewed me to understand what her character might be feeling at different stages of the game. It was refreshing to see someone address the raw emotions we go through.
