Hey AW!
I've been absent for awhile, but I'm back and wanted to share with you all, and to meet all of the newcomers since I've been gone! I graduated from college last March with a double major in literary journalism and global cultures, and was chosen to be the commencement speaker at my university in June. After leaving Irvine, I moved to the east coast in Aug for my first post-grad internship. Since then, I've interned at NPR and am now currently interning at MSNBC in New…

Hello Alopecia World!
I'm finally back online after a long hiatus. My life got very hectic, very quickly. Starting this past January, I picked up a second job at the school paper doing layout and design. At the same time, I embarked on a 10-week adventure with Lightsaber Club which resulted in a lovely 12-page article for my Intro to Reporting class. It was so much fun and so crazy how passionate the club members were about lightsaber dueling! Going into spring quarter at the end of…

Yesterday, Loretto High School announced it will be closing its doors in June.
Since I heard the news, I feel like I've been walking around in a daze for the whole day. I'm trying to make sense of how to exist in a world where Loretto doesn't. It's hard to explain to people who don't or have not experienced it themselves, but the impact of Loretto closing is larger than I think anyone could imagine. It sounds cheesy and sounds cliché, but those four years I was there were truly the…

Sorry for the absence as of late. School + work + activities + sleep = not a lot of spare time.
They're doing tree trimming outside of my apartment this week. It's created such a mess and I hate ducking to avoid falling branches. It's even worse when stuff gets in my hair and I don't notice because I can't feel it!
The weather has been extremely hot down here. What ever happened to crisp, cool autumn weather?? I'm not a fan of this 80 / 90 degrees stuff. I'm anticipating…

Hi, hello, hey, etc.
If I haven't replied your comments lately, I'm sorry! I've been busy traveling and visiting with people I haven't seen in awhile. Being home sure has a different feel to it!
Today was the big day! I got my new wig from Miss Peggy Tom and it's pretty! An extra plus: The new wig doesn't require wig tape to hold in place, which is a major thumbs up. And there were no Top Model makeover tears from me today as Miss Peggy shaved my head. It was actually an…

I woke up again this morning to stare at several strands of black hair on my pillow and sheets. Earlier in the shower more strands fell out. Looking at myself in the mirror, it doesn't seem like I'm losing anything. In fact, my hair looks like it's growing. But I know that's not the case. This Friday when I go see Miss Peggy to get my new wig, I think I'm going to ask her to shave off the hairs on my head right now. I didn't think I'd be so emotional about this decision, but even now I'm choked…

I'm a thinker. Sometimes I over-think, sometimes I don't think enough. But when I have time to myself to just Be, all of that doesn't seem to matter. (After all, sometimes we all get caught up in trying to do so much that we forget to Be...)
I was thinking the other day about the little moments in life that happen in just seconds, yet have the ability to profoundly impact your life. I've got a few of those that stand out in my mind, but I'm remembering right now about one specific…

Hello Alopecia World!
My mini-hiatus is over and I can finally begin to (somewhat) relax. I hope you all have been well.
I finished summer school last week, which is such a weight off of my shoulders. My job has been progressing nicely and I've finally finished the layout and edits on this year's season brochure, mini-pamphlet, ticket order form and fall newsletter. So for this next week it's just press releases and postcard designs for me until I finally get to go home!…

Hope you're all enjoying the summer still (and the Olympics too!)...

There was an email sent out at work today notifying employees/student assistants that the governor's statewide budget cuts may soon be affecting UCs.
As we learned in Sociology last year, college students are feeling pressured to take on more than they can handle in order to afford education. Working two jobs and attending school full-time is not an ideal situation for most, yet it is becoming more and more of a necessity in order to avoid the trap of loans and skyrocketing interest…

I feel like I spend a lot more time on my hair than anything else in the mornings when I'm getting ready because I'm trying to find a way to style my wig so it looks "natural." I can't just leave it down all of the time, California is too too warm for that! My variety of headbands is wide and I have a hat or two to use on those days I feel particularly lazy. Maybe there's a way I can learn to do a quick style to go...I have my makeup routine down to less than 5 minutes (thank you, Tyra Banks!)…

I finally have a day off from work today. And I
still couldn't "sleep in!" I think my brain isn't used to having the luxury of sleeping in past 8 on a weekday. As enjoyable as my job can be, a day off is very much appreciated - especially for my poor eyes who endure my hours of staring at a computer screen, meticulously editing shots in Photoshop or lining up text on a page.
I was talking with my former roommate (and high school friend) last night about being part of that…

I have this clear mental image in my mind of a moment in my second grade classroom. Normally, my memory is pretty iffy. My memories don't play out like scenes from a movie; I can't remember details so specifically, but this one memory stands out in my mind quite well.
I was seven. My mom had just found a small bald spot on the right side of my head near the back. It was about the size of a dime, maybe a little bigger. I remember my parents telling me that it was normal, but it didn't…

As I took off my wig last night and stared in the mirror, I realized that my hair has started to grow back a lot more thicker than I can remember in years. Not to say that it's a full head of hair, it's far from it--about maybe 5% of my original hair. For the most part, my hair usually grows back in two or three chunks from the top of my head before it falls out again, but the hair is actually staying in place this time.
I was washing my wig earlier and it occurred to me that I don't…

What a coincidence that the other day as I was combing my new wig, I was wondering what would happen if the contestants on
Shear Genius had to cut and style wigs for alopecia and cancer patients and voila! This past Wednesday night on
Shear Genius, eight women with alopecia were on the show, spreading awareness and having wigs styled for the episode's challenge.
Good for you, Bravo, for using this fabulously addicting reality show (I've been a fan since season one!) to…

Following the baptism of Jesus in Jordan, Jesus retreated to the desert. At his baptism, Jesus had heard the voice of God telling him, "You are my Beloved Son." This was all new and strange for Jesus who before had only known himself to be a carpenter from Nazareth. Jesus went into the desert to think about his identity, where he was also tempted by an evil voice that lay within him.
The first temptation was a temptation of power. The voice…

Something interesting came to me in meditation on Wednesday. I won't use the 'W' word [weird], although it would be an accurate word to describe it.
I had been reflecting on the video of Pema Chodron we were watching in class. While watching this video, it was almost like this complete deja v experience--everything she spoke of seemed so real to me, and almost like I'd heard it before. It was as if the world around me disappeared when the video…
