Just wondering if anyone else with AU experiences being allergic to the sun? I never had any signs of Alopecia until I turned 37. I use to tan well when in the sun. Every since I was diagnosed as having AU, I can't go into the sun without turning into hives and itching everywhere. This even includes drving/riding in a car. The strangest thing to me, wherever the sun has made contact with my skin, face, hands, etc. later in the evening turns into hives and requires me to take benadryl to control the itching.

Kami,

I have the same problem. During the early spring I lie in a tanning bed to get a base tan so that when I do go outside during the summer the allergic reaction is not as bad. One thing that I found that helps is to put a bag of ice on the hives for about 15-20 minutes. This reduces the reaction and the itching.

Take care,

Libby

Thank you so much! I was wondering if going to the tanning spa would help, I didn't want to waste the money if I was going to have the same reaction as being in the sun. Guess I know what I'll be doing in the near future. Thanks for the information :)

Kami,

If you lie too long the first few times you will get the same reaction. Start out for only a couple of minutes and slowly add on. As a side note, I spent some time outside over the weekend. It was sunny out. I did get a few itchy bumps but nothing compared to previous years. I didn't have to take any benadryl nor did I have to use any ice.

Take care,

Libby
