Last night one of my guy friends came over to my apartment. His best friend, I will call him Mike, actually lives in the same apartment complex as me in the building next to mine. On Saturday, I saw Mike and said hi. I was wearing my blonde wig at that time. Then, on Sunday, I drove by Mike while he was walking in the parking lot and waved. I was wearing my brownish wig. When my friend came over, I asked him if Mike knows that I wear wigs. He said yes and that Mike may look dumb but he is not at all. Then, he told me that Mike calls me pretty woman. I said "What... Why?" I guess Mike thinks I remind him of Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" since she wears wigs. Now Julia wears a different type of wig then I do in that movie. I think Julia is beautiful but that she looks much better later on in the movie when she isn't wearing any wigs. I know I should take it as a compliment but at times I'm still sensitive with comments regarding my wig wearing. I can't help but wonder.... is Mike trying to say I look like I'll give it up for money?

As stacy said i am very sure he wasnt calling you a street walker. We have let this hair situation affect us so bad that we have gotten to the point where we cant even receive a compliment without turning it into a negative. My guy friend recently gave me a compliment and said guys were looking at me and i came out and said "if they knew i didnt have hair they would think different" this ofcourse irritated him because he asked why i cant take a compliment and then asked how i know they wouldnt still find me attractive. So sometimes we need to stop the self inflicted negativity and take the compliment for what it is.... a compliment and a nice one at that :o)

That is right... take the compliment for what it is, a compliment. Thank you. I think I am more sensitive from people I know more than when strangers make comments.

I wasn't sure what Phyllis Diller looks like so I had to google her. LOL. :) But yes, Pretty Woman beats Phyllis. On the bright side... I wasn't called drag queen. Ha ha ha. I'm going to have to do that. They would laugh! I need to make money somehow. He he.

"Walk the ho stroll"??? WTF (appropriately) is that???? ....no wonder I'm still a virgin.... :(

Now then, O Handbag-Skinned Gal, here's where it's at from a guy's perspective. - if I say that I think someone's pretty, in the way of the aforesaid "Mike", then what I really mean is ..shock, horror.... that they're quite attractive (how boring...). If I was trying to be an intellectual smartarse who watches old films and makes referential comments, I'd be more than a little dumb if there was the slightest chance that it might go over the head of whoever it was I was talking about, wouldn't I? Anyway, there's zilch chance of that being the case, because as all you Gorgeous Gals on here already know, us guys aren't clever enough to come up with anything so tortuously complex and bitchy as that. Honest. :)

See, Tiffany's right.... sometimes a compliment really is just a compliment. As the saying goes.... if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably really IS a duck. And there's nothing guaranteed to piss you off quite as much as saying or giving something nice to someone, and having it thrown back in your face, is there?

Oh, and by the way: if I thought any money I made from such activities had to be used solely in the purchase of a Prius, I'd be offering it free to all comers. (Ahem.) As it is, I'm cheaper after 6 and on Sundays.... operators are waiting to take your call, etc. ;)

I think there are only a few male fans of the theatre and films that are as attuned to these themes, plots and characters as we women are. However, films as well known as "Pretty Woman" have probably been watched a wee bit more than others...especially with that particular star and that particular theme! I don't know where this Mike fits in here, but sometimes one can CHOOSE to take anything as a compliment and just move on. Now, if YOU really cared about MIKE, then I could see where every comment may be laden with potential meaning, to be dissected and compared and replayed and...oh, hell, just ASK him. Saves time and sleep! Why not ask him to share a cup of coffee with you? Save the movie talk. It can make ANYONE appear more than a little dumb when the references are not taken correctly...even when very well intended! I agree with Kathleen that Mr. Mikie may like you!

Hey, TG's right, really. Just cut the cr*ap and ask him out! But remember - just cos he looks like a fella, doesn't mean he'll give it up for money... ;)

By the way, who IS this "Julia Roberts" woman??

So...Alliegator, what became of Mike??? Care to update us? :)
Comment by Alliegator on November 9, 2010 at 12:30pm
Sure! Well... nothing came of it. I still see him occasionally. I have no idea if he still calls me pretty woman. I'm not interested in him because he is not in a good place in his life but I am always friendly when I see him. :) Thank you for asking!
