I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
Hi LeslieAnn,
Just wanted to drop a note. I'm off to visit a wig salon tomorrow. I think I will visit a few before I commit. I've really been trying hard to avoid this, but the scarves are no longer cutting it, and sadly, I've lost half the eyelashes on one eye and most of the hair on my arms and legs. The dermatologist stopped in the middle of my shots last week and more or less said that there was too much gone to continue. I guess it's time to get on with the wig thing. Just never thought I'd have to deal with the eyelashes too. Sorry, I've gone off on a tangent! The real reason I dropped a line was to say 'thank you' for the book. The first day it came in the mail, I sat in my solarium on a beautiful fall afternoon and read it cover to cover. I laughed and I cried! But, I still had lots of hair! Just so you know, I read it again today, on a dreary winter afternoon, and I still laughed and I cried! And now I have hardly any hair. But, you still made me laugh….thanks!
I am doing better today. I had a rough day yesterday. Filled with doctor appointments and blood work, and then filling prescriptions. I had about 150 injections of steroids into my scalp yesterday and it was just horrible. The doctor also told me that i have lost about 75% of my hair. It was a sad and hard day for me. Last night, I had one of the worse headaches I have ever felt. I am hoping today is a better day. I am trying to be as optomistic as possible.
I have come to terms that i might possibly lose all of my hair. that was a hard realization for me. defiantely not an easy thing to grasp. I have decided that come April 1st, if my hair doesnt grow back, i am going to shave it off. I cannot watch the rest of my beautiful hair fall out. I have already ordered a very nice wig which i am really looking forward to getting.
Thank you for writing me! I am ordering your book the second I send this to you and cannot wait to read it! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Hi LeslieAnn,
Thanks for asking.
I am doing O.K. but my reumalologist said I had a positive blood test for lupus. However the only symptom had been hair loss and hormone imbalance af ew months ago. Now that I feeling much better since I have been taking Finasteride, I have gotten most of my hair back. My GP does not think I have lupus but this may explain some of my symptoms when I started peri-menopause six months ago. Nice pictures! Did you write a book? where can I get it?
I love the sound of that book. I met up with some other women with Alopecia the other week - the first time I've managed to find people to talk with about it. One woman had total hair lost whilst the other had re-growth after most of it having fallen out. It was so inspirational to meet with them and see how they were coping - or not. It made feel lucky that I still have so much hair in comparison but still angry at the unfairness of it all.
Thank you! I will check your book out! It's ironic, how dancing is actually the love of my life :)
I updated "about me" section of my profile, so you gan a brief overview of my story if you have a second. Right now i'm at a point where i just have to hope for the best and get ready for the worst...
Thank you again for your support!
thank you so much! You have no idea how great it is to hear that. its nice to finally see that im not alone in this. i think that has been the hardest thing..seeing everyone else being normal while i stand out so much.I will deffinently have to check out your book! And again, thank you for the support.
Hi LeslieAnn,
I am well and keeping busy. Trying to finish what you so kindly helped me get started with on AW. It will all come together soon.
Thank you for being so helpful. See you soon.
Brenda Kay
Thanks alot dear. But I dont have the book yet. How can I get it? I'm not sure I can get it in any of the book stores here in Lagos, Nigeria. I would love to have it and read it as soon as possible. Take care
Thanks for asking. I am better today, thanks to finding this site... and your book!
I will definitely read it. We have something besides AU in common: advertising.
Maybe that's what made us bald! LOL!!
I would love to read your book. it sounds like it would be a wonderful much needed read. my daughter is doing very well, unaffected by all this so far. taking things one day at a time is exactly how to handle this but is incredibly hard when you are trying to predict the future, ha. thanks for asking!
I got excited when I saw your post! Having an interview or doing an article on you would be aweseme for my publishing class!! I am going to have to read your book now :) Who was your publisher, or are you self published? I will get in contact with you soon about doing an article. Thanks so much!!
Leslie-Ann, thanks for welcoming me into your community. I am here to support the succeses and lives of my students that are afflicted with alopecia. Your book sounds like good advice for everyone!
Thanks LeslieAnn. I am glad I have found this site. It is good to know that I am not alone. There are lots of people going through the same thing. It is the unknown that gets to me. My original bald patch has started to grow hair. I was so excited until I found another patch. And then'KABOOM', the emotions all start again.I do not know anyone personally close to me that has had AA, but everyone seems to have a friend. I am going to try and get your book. I am interested in reading it.
Thanks again LeslieAnn.
Hi Leslie, I'm good thanks. Just working hard but nothing else for it I'm afraid. Looking forward to getting a break at easter. I notice you've written a book. I must see if I can get a copy. fairly new to all this as only been 4yrs and I feel I am still coming to terms with it myself so this is the 1st website I've joined. x
THanks LeslieAnn, My days going okay, how about yours?? YOur art is amazing. YOu are very talented. So you were 25 when yours started too, what was your experience? DId you lose it all really quickly? Your wig looks very natural, just gorgeous. I hope I am able to find something that look that natural, Have a great week, Amber
Thank you so much!! She is a super cute girl with a fiesty little attitude!! She started getting patches and 2. Then it all grew back in just before she turned 3. And then just after Christmas this past year she got ran a fever for a couple days, had a cough and then it went all down hill. Now she has a beautiful shiny head and no eyebrows. She loves her head and she tell EVERYONE what she has!! And I mean everyone one!! LOL. Thanks for the post and I look forward to reading your book!!
Hi, beautiful pictures of you and your family. Thanks for commenting on my profile and welcoming me. I have had this so long its just part of me..but now my son is affected..and that is so devastating to me. He's 34 now ,not a child by any means, but he's always my baby and I now worry so much more about his brother and now my grandchildren developing this. I guess we feel we can take anything, but hey leave my kids alone. I'm glad I found this site and all of you. You seem to have it all together and your book looks great, good for you !!
Hi Leslie,
Thank you so much for reaching out to me as a new member. I love your photos and your illustrations for your book. I would love to read this and plan on getting a copy just as soon as I can. Honestly, I am very new to this disease and quite frightened by it. Some days I am fine with it and feel empowered to not let it get me down, and other days, I can't fight it when I look at myself in the mirror. Right now, the big decision for me is whether to shave the last remaining hair i have left or not. My doctor says no, that it will hurt me psychologically, but to see myself with how it is now is not helping me. advise?
Thank you again,
Laurie
Hi LesileAnn! Thanks! We are enjoying wonderful spring after a long long winter with lots of snow. Great time! And looking forward to vacation and all the summer stuff. Today I'm going to plant some herbs - any idea what can be useful for hair regrowth?
Anyway, the book looks great, I must read it! Thanks for sharing your gift as a writer. Perhaps I could translate it to Czech - I am a translator :-)
Leslie, thank you for welcoming me to AA. This is my 2nd time around with this, when I lost my hair the 1st time, I lost it on my legs and underarms. I had very thick auburn hair, when it came back, it was much thinner and white. It has been over a year now and there are no signs of it coming back except where there was healthy hair, however this time I lost my eyebrows and eyelashes and I am having a very hard time coping with that, any suggestions? I plan on buying your book as soon as possible. I do have alot of other health issues I am dealing with, which all started back in 1992 and I believe are all connected..
Thank you Leslie,
Mine is coming out in big clumps too. I went from a full head in December to nearly nothing 3 months later. I really hope it grows back at some point. I can't wait to read your book! Have a great week,
Laurie

I have it by my bed and I read in it a little each night..I has really given me a new prospective and I am going to try your suggestions on the eyes and eyebrows, as it really bothers me not to have either, and you are a great inspiration to me. I look at your pictures and your are a beautiful person in and out. I just have one request. Where I live in Montana, we only have one, yes one dermatoligst,,knows nothing of support groups in this area, any suggestions how I can find a support group in my area? I live in Great Falls, Montana...Hope you had a wonderful Easter Thanks for your support
Mary Kay
Thank you... for many, many things! I bought your book in a moment of desperation, not knowing who or where to turn to... it truly helped me step back and put things into perspective.
Thanks for the information. What a job it is trying to find a wig with no one in the area. I will also read your book which so many have commented on how good it is.
Have a good day.
Stacey
I just ordered your book and I am really excited to read it. It will be amazing to get some helpful advice from someone who has lost all their hair like me. I am so tired of hearing it from "hairy" people!! LOL.

Can't wait to read your book!!! Have you ever looked at the Keratin.com website for alopecia? Very impressive! I'm sure you have a wealth of information about different forms of alopecia. Do you know people like me that have seasonal recurrence and DON'T progressively get worse and lose all of their hair? That is my biggest concern and stress factor the more information I read about this disease! I do believe my trigger for hair loss is sometimes chronic stress that i hold inside of me and menopause, since my hair loss began then. Any advice would be so appreciative! Thanks, Leslie Ann
Thank you for the photo compliments, Leslie! Sadly, the photographer is an absolute nut job, so I can't ever use him again. It was a lot of fun to use the ideas I had had for a while and actually make them happen.
I love that you wrote a book about life with this condition - I think I just found my spring break read!
Hi LeslieAnn,
I just finished your book and I loved it. It was so interesting to see so many of my own feelings in other peoples words. I have now passed it on to my mother and promised it to my sister and best friend so they can all understand a bit more about what I am feeling.
I loved it!!!
