A new study suggests that balding men should just go ahead and Bic it all off: society sees men with shaved heads being more "manly."

Alfred Mannes, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, published…

Kissed on the head!

What a year its been so far. Unbelievable and Im totally gobsmacked. Im grateful and humbled that all that has transpired in the last 7 months. Curious as to what the rest of the year will bring.

Lets start this with the article that was written about me and voyages to the gym, which was issued in my local newspaper in late April. This was after I approached the marketing director of the gym I go to, about the possibility of raising some awareness about alopecia. I had been approached…

New to this site and new to alopecia

As luck would have it my mother owns a beauty supply that specializes in wigs and hairgoods in Orlando, FL. Ever since I can remember I have been around hair salons, beauty supplies and hair goods.

I have seen many cases of hair loss among men and women. So when I saw a bald spot in the back of my scalp 2 weeks ago, I knew exactly what it was. I was bewildered to the why I had alopecia areata suddenly, since I am in my 50's and have no family history of it. However as far as my immune…

It's not bad just makes me self concous when i'm walking outside and the wind is blowing. UGGHH, This is not what i really need right now, but such is life.

It's not fair or…

Anniversary-Almost one whole year without hair!

Its February 2012. At the end of February 2011 I realized after seeing a photo of myself, that my alopecia was beyond repair; not enough hair on my head to "cover" the spots as I had been doing the past 18 years. I went to my hairdresser, who was instrumental in fixing what hair I had left throughout the years to shave off what was left of my hair.

That happened on March 5th. Its almost a whole year. I've grown a great deal. I have had many realizations, some good, some horrible.…

I recently became involved in a book project about breast cancer survivors. Although I don't have cancer, those with Alopceia often are approached with that very question. The author invited me to participate in order to represent one of the struggles many women go through in dealing with this disease. I'm also thrilled at the fact that this book will help bring more awareness about this condition. It was very empowering to write my story and recall the stages I went through on my journey.… Continue

The Bald Man and the Fly

THERE was once a bald man who sat down after work on a hot summer's day. A fly came up and kept buzzing about his bald pate, and stinging him from time to time. The man aimed a blow at his little enemy, but — whack — his palm came on his head instead. Again the fly tormented him, but this time the man was wiser and said:

"You will only injure yourself if you take notice of despicable enemies."

Longing for a cure - Defeated by alopecia

It is amazing how many emails and messages I get about other organizations dealing with alopecia. My canned response has always been, "We are stronger together then we are apart." I mean this, I am not just saying it to be politically correct. When I founded CAP I did so because I wanted more for my daughter then what was out there. The oldest and largest is NAAF and was the only thing I could fine in 2003. They had the annual conference but that was all until they incorporated Charlie's… Continue

Walking down the street in Philadelphia!

So, I am working at a Temp assignment while I look for a permanent job. I was on my way to an interview and was a little nervous, hoping that my baldness won't have a negative impact, that I get the job.

as I walk down the street, this man comes up along side me and says "looking good sis, looking good; I wish more women showed what God gave them and go natural like you; I'm tired of all these women with their horse-hair wigs and weaves; they ought to just wear what God gave them.… Continue

things and stuff, with occasional poignant thought.

I've been away for a while. Busy, with all of those things and stuff, but thought I'd pop in and beam an update into the yonder.

I attended HairExpo2011 this long weekend with the lovely ladies (and men) of the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation - I've been calling it the AAAF (pronounced "arf" :P ). It was fantastic! I met some of the nicest people, got to spread the good word about alopecia, and hugged some total strangers. A little exhausting, but awesome. It was also the first… Continue

Videos and comment threads, my Youtubes

Made a new wig video recently. Still maintaining my Youtube channel, obsessing over 'insight' and grooming my playlists. Some playlists are so old that some of the videos are gone, deleted or user account closed. I get a decent number of views. I hope my videos and essays help people with the shock of being diagnosed with alopecia, or the dread of realizing that it IS going to progress to Totalis or Universalis from Areata. I want to reach both those women (and men) who choose to go natural…

Crazy times!

Lately I have been so overwhelmed with finals and work that I haven't really taken some time for myself.

Its like, we work so hard to find some things in life that we forget about the little things. I have definitely taken for granted some things lately but, with hard work comes success. Other times, when you work so hard for some things, others just happen to come along, and are given to you. This is an excellent example:…

Head designs for a bald guy

I was reading the Jewish Chronicle the other day and there was an article about a man named: Philip Levine. Since going bald he decided to use his head as a canvas for art. I really like this idea! He has a couple of websites, so check them out:

Cool story of a famous bald guy logo ;-)

Valve bald guy logo Recently, a Redditor wrote Valve Software Company to inquire about the bald guy in the Valve logo pictured here. The Redditor got this really cool response from Ray Ueno:

I worked with Gabe and team to develop the "guy in the logo" back when we first named the company, Valve (circa 1995/6), and…

Out in the world with my bald head

My husband and I went to Target for some household essentials. I happened to meet him over in the men's section where he was trying on pants. I saw a few caps that were very unisex looking, thought I might try them on and pick one or two up for the summer. Funky looking little caps, right up my alley. I was wearing a Buff. Of course, in order to try the cap I needed to remove my buff. I walked over to the full length mirror about 5 feet from where my husband was. I removed my buff put on cap… Continue

Coming out bald!

I had my "coming out" for lack of a better term last night. One week ago yesterday I had what was left of my hair buzzed off. Alopecia claimed most of the hair on my head.

I am a singer/songwriter. I had a gig yesterday at Philadelphia's premiere listening room, The Tin Angel. I opened for Vance Gilbert. I've played the Tin many, many times, but never without hair. While I've been walking around bald for one week, this was the first time a large amount of people who both were fans… Continue

Done...bald...transitioned...spot-less...liberated!

I will forever remember Saturday, March 5, 2011, the day I buzzed off what appeared to look like a light, scattered bird's nest on my head. It was amazing. I returned to my hometown, NYC, to my hairdresser of 19 years, Skipper Edwards. I initially went to Skipper because he was my sister's hairdresser; he was good with hair of women of color. Being bi-racial my hair was kinky, although it could be blown out. He proceeded, throughout the years to cut, style my hair in an appropriate way to hide… Continue
