Tips for Coping with Alopecia from Day One

1. Love yourself unconditionally, with or without hair.

2. Consult a physician when you think your hair loss has become excessive or abnormal.

3. Get a second or third opinion if you need confirmation of a physician’s diagnosis.

4. Educate yourself about alopecia (hair loss), its many possible causes, traditional and alternative treatments, treatment costs, possible side-effects, and other options (e.g., wigs, scarves, etc.).

5. Remember that bald is beautiful, too.

6. Seek the advice of your physician and people who love and care about you before making decisions about treatments or lifestyle changes.

7. Join an alopecia support group to receive insight and inspiration from others who are living with hair loss.

8. Give others who may also be concerned (e.g., your employer, school, or church) appropriate information about your condition.

9. Maintain your emotional well-being by learning positive strategies for coping with depression, rejection, ridicule, stress, anxiety, and other negative feelings and experiences. Also develop conflict management skills, and other strong interpersonal skills, which you can use when dealing with people who choose to remain ignorant or insensitive. In other words, see a professional counselor, if you must.

10. Live life to the fullest, which includes allowing yourself to truly love and be loved and taking full advantage of the new opportunities alopecia opens to you.

Cheryl Carvery and richard jones (rj) encourage you to share these 10 helpful suggestions with others who are dealing with alopecia.

I think baby steps at the moment I don't have a problem at home with free balling lol in front of family and friends I think perhaps in a couple of weeks with a little more growth I will.

That's *exactly* how I felt. Being a woman who is *bald* was so much easier than being a woman who was *balding*. I stopped feeling like a victim! And I'm sure that not dealing with the stress and trauma of losing handfuls of hair all day was helpful in my recovery.

Will you go bald in public? Or do you prefer a wig or other head coverings?

Thanks Jaclyn it was quite freeing actually to shave my head It was like I was in control instead of it controling me.

So glad you're feeling better after the big shave, Annette! Congrats on taking a very courageous step. I'm glad it turned out to be the right move for you. Prayers for lots of healthy new regrowth for you!!

My 1 year old lost his hair in just a few days time. He slowly got thinner hair in 2 months. Then all of his hair fell out in about 3 days. I thought that was unusually quick to lose his hair that fast. It has been almost 9 months of him being completely without hair. He gets a bit of peach fuzz. Then we started poly visol for picky toddlers. It has iron, B vitamins, etc. He began growing hair immediately and has seen very fast growth. He still looks bald, but has dark hair patches growing with white and blonde. Still has plenty of bald spots left. I just thought I would suggest this as a possible help for growth since it seems to be working for him. Every day I see more and more hair filling in. Also it is getting long in the spots that have been filled in the longest. I hope this continues.

After years of relatively mild hair loss on my chest, my Alopecia moved uptown to my head with a vengeance. Within two weeks of finding a spot the size of a dime behind my ear, I had to shave my entire head, including brows. That was three weeks ago and I'm starting to get used to it and I'm over most of the freaking out. I was able to get by for years basically by buzzing my chest with clippers and staying in denial. I hadn't even told most of my family and friends. They sure know now!

I just wanted to say hello to all the other newbies.

I have alopecia since I was 8 and I am 31 now. This is the first time that I shave my head and started using wigs. I had a acid treatment done and I had a bad side affect, had to go to the emergency room my face and neck looked like I got hit with a baseball bat. I could not breath and my scalp was on fire. I am taking a break from treatments, I need help accepting myself.

Try the powder and sealer from Bald Girls Do lunch. No one noticed that I had no brows.
