The Wig...

When my family and I had accepted the fact that I would have to wear a wig to hide my growing hair loss, I was the tender age of nine. This was the mid Sixties and long straight hair was just becoming all the rage. I pictured picking out a long, flowing wig that would be the envy of all the other fifth graders in my class. So when my mother took me to a wig salon that also sold wedding attire, I was told that they didn't have any long wigs that fit my small nine-year-old head. We finally… Continue

Living with a secret. My journey begins.

Have you ever lived with a secret? Have you ever lived a lie? I never really thought about it much until I caught the tail end of Oprah. She was talking to people who were living a lie. Some of these people were regular people during the day and strippers or prostitutes at night. Another was living a rich and famous life but had been dirt poor as a child though no one knew. One famous athlete was molested as a child. The therapist ended the show by saying that thousands of viewers were living… Continue

Oh, the humility of it all!

My hair kept coming out and, as prescribed by our family doctor, my mom began applying cortisone cream, wrapping my head in Saran Wrap, and topping it off with a shower cap. (The idea was to get the head to sweat which would cause the blood to rush to the surface of my scalp and help stimulate the skin and allow the cortisone to do its work.) There would be some success, but it would be short-lived. By the time I was nine, the patches were growing worse and so was my parents' alarm. I can still… Continue

Three months

I've really let myself go. I don't even know the creature that looks back at me so sadly from the other side of the mirror. It took about three months to go from missing spots in my hair to no hair, no lashes, no brows, no anything. It took about three months to go from curvy and carrying a few extra pounds to not being able to fit into any of my clothes. It took about three months to go from being depressed to seriously contemplating all of my darkest thoughts.

I feel so disgusted… Continue

Happy summer, and an update

I just want to wish everyone a good summer. I hope it hasn't been too hot where you are.

I visit AW now and then, but for whatever reason I'm more reluctant to post now than when I first joined. Who knows why. I do want to thank everyone for the site, your posts, and photos. Even though I haven't posted in a long time, it really helps to read your words. You are all such wonderful, beautiful, fun people. Inside, and out. Thank you!

My shed hasn't stopped, but I was down to… Continue

Why yes, it *is* a wig actually

So my husbands parents came to visit this past weekend. This is stressful enough...I'm particularly depressed when they arrive and the Husband has to coax me out of the bedroom, wanting to all go down to the Wild West days they had at the historical district of town. So I drag myself out of bed and get dressed and go outside to say hello to his folks.

Mother in law notices my blonde hair (the best shape of a wig I currently have) and freaks out, she goes on and on about how much she… Continue

Maybe it's about choice

lol I've got a few blog experiences but not one as special as this one, I'm 23 and I'm a Mexican girl who is finishing studying at college, I've got Alopecia Universalis since I was 11 and of course just like everyone that has this kind of experiences it's too difficult to find your way through life, when all the questions about life just start attacking your mind, when you don't know even why you are doing what you are doing at that very moment.

But I'm so sure that these kind of… Continue

Any recommendations for a (sensitive) wig store in the west los angeles area?

Hi, Has anyone found a store in the West LA area that you feel comfortable going to and shopping for wigs? I've gone to a few and not had much luck so I've ended up buying online and have many wigs in boxes that I've not worn because they are not quite right. And the most recent one that I bought has hooks to use for adjusting the size, but I'm wondering if they are meant to just fasten on in a particular way. I'd appreciate any thoughts on how to use these hooks. And, has anyone trimmed the… Continue

More Valuable Than Hair

A friend just sent this to me, and I thought it could help us get a reality check on what is more important to our loved ones than our hair. This is especially important for those of us who are older, or who have children and grandchildren.

A young man learns what's most important in life from the guy next door.

Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an… Continue

At Family Reunion

Family Reunion Picnic is tomorrow. This is the first time the extended family will see me without the weaves or wigs. I have already gotten questions about my bald head from one Uncle, I said it is a medical problem. I will see how many more questions I will receive on tomorrow. Level of anxiety-level 6.

My first experience!

Today here in Ontario it is very hot out! I haven't been wearing a wig for the last week at home just walking around my home and yard with my smooth baldie head :)

This afternoon I realized I had to go to the store and couldn't wait for my husband to get home so I had to go no matter what.

I bought a nice looking scarf early this week and thought I'm not wearing a wig in this heat, I put my scarf on and off I went to the store I did this for the very first time!!! I thought I don't… Continue

Runny nose

Does anyone else suffer from an extremely runny nose due to the lack of or no nose hair at all????

I have come to the conclusion that my nose is a never ending faucet due to the fact that I have no noise hair and it causes my nose to be sensitive to a lot of things and smells?

PLEASE let me know if any of you guys have experienced or are experiencing this right now.

Thanks!

Montoya!

Do I cut the hair I have or leave it???

Hello Everyone!! I sure would love some input from you guys. I have alopecia areata ophiasis. I do not have hair on the back of my head and it appears that the alopecia is going to continue up the middle of my head. The hair I have (sides and some on top) is a little longer then shoulder length. I kept it long to try and cover the balding areas, creative hair styling and pyschological reasons I guess. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. ANYWAY....I digress...sorry. My question to ya all… Continue

what to do?

Well it was happening again after 80% regrowth my hair is fallin out again, I am fed up and actually really depressed about it. I find it very hard now to talk about it and admit to people who dont know about my alopecia, I think people can change once they hear something like this. Not sure if i should seek counselling or just need to grow some balls and man up.

I hate synthetic wigs and as i get them from the nhs i asked if i could get a human hair wig as i can only get my natural colour… Continue

It's Not Our "Fault!"

Genes found for alopecia areata, a kind of hair loss

June 30, 2010 | 7:18 pmAfter a scanning the human genome for tiny DNA differences, researchers say they've uncovered clues to several genes involved in alopecia areata, in which patches of hair -- or all hair -- are lost from the scalp or full body.

Yes, yes, we hear you yawn, another day, another whole-genome scan, reporting genes-linked-to-something-we-already-knew-had-a-heritable-component. But to find out… Continue
