Black women's hair loss tied to braiding, weaving

NEW YORK — Very tight braiding or weaving is linked to a permanent type of hair loss that affects many African American women, new research suggests.

While the findings can't prove hair grooming is at the root of the problem, women might still want to take them into consideration, said Dr. Angela Kyei, who worked on the study.

"I won't tell you not to braid your hair, but I don't want you to braid it so tightly that you need to take pain medication," said Kyei, of the… Continue

Transition

I am excited for it to be one week from today. I'll have been "bald" for a full 24-hours by then. Its funny that its been two weeks or so since I noticed my spots got so bad that its time for me to take down what's left of my hair. I decided to go back to my hometown, New York City to my hairdresser of over twenty years to buzz my hair off. It may seem like I'm making a big deal or ritual of all this, but, it is a big deal. I was diagnosed with alopecia areata 18 years ago. Its been slow going.… Continue

Bald again...Bald again

So if you saw my last blog post, I had this lovely re-growth going on, only 1 or 2 bald spots, I was quite excited. WELL...fast forward to last week and I found a few more. I was kind of upset, but said 'Oh well, luckily my hair is only an inch long, not to the middle of my back like last time'. It was all different lengths, and it looked like I let my 1 year old niece cut my hair. So I pulled out the buzzers and did the 1/2 inch guard. BIG mistake! I found so many more bald spots that were… Continue

Grateful

In four days I will be leaving from Ontario, Canada to go to Nebaj, Guatemala on a mission trip. I may sound like some crazy religious person but I won't lie when I say it is God's will that I am going there. Ever since I felt I wanted to go, everything has fallen into place and I feel compelled - I have to do this! What made me want to post though was the fact that some of us with alopecia (especially newbies) are so absorbed with our hairloss and changing image that we tend to lose focus on… Continue

Shocked! Wow! Holy cow!

So I have NO idea what happened, but my patchy barely there hair that I shaved off, has grown in so think and I have only 1 bald spot! Every morning I wake up with bed head and have to wet it to make it stay down, and it feels AMAZING that I have to do that. I am still missing the tail-end of my left eyebrow, but I don't even care about it! I have HAIR, I have A LOT of hair!! I haven't gone to the dermatologist, I haven't done anything. I know there is still that chance that it will fall out… Continue

Gail Porter's alopecia returns, etc.

Not sure how many of you have heard but the well known Gail Porter who had sported a full head of short blond hair this past summer after a bout with alopecia since 2005 is now experiencing hair loss again. The article was posted at www.dailymail.co.uk (search for the latest news about Gail Porter) and focuses on alopecia being caused by stress (which still has not been proven and is believed to be a doctor's excuse for not knowing the cause). Apart from… Continue

Falling back out

So my head has started itching more since I've been letting my hair grow in and I just went to scratch the back of my head and found that 2 of the spots where I had re-growth, are completely bald again :( I've been Ok with being bald, I haven't cried once. But I think now its just getting REALLY ridiculous. It teases me with beautiful re-growth, only to make it to like an inch and then start falling out again. I told myself not to get excited about it, I should learn to listen to myself a… Continue

Misdiagnosis

I am not sure whether to be thrilled or angry.

When I was diagnosed with AGA in February, the dermatologist said there was no need for a biopsy or blood tests because it was such a clear case of AGA. Seeing as through he is "the best" in the state, I took him at his word. When I had made the appointment with him, I had also made an appointment with a hair transplant specialist and realised last month that it was due.

When I went to see her last month, she asked for biopsy… Continue

Lost my hair after taking fertility drugs (Clomid & Femara)

I took Clomid & Femara as fertility drugs. 1 month on Clomid, I lost an inch by inch suare of hair. Doc said NOT in any way in relation to the Clomid...but switched me to Femara. I took that for 3 months. By the 3rd month almost all of my hair was gone...my doc STILL stated that it was nothing to do with Clomid or Femara...and that I must be having other medical issues. No pregnancy even happened...

After seeing a dermatologist....she told me the Clomid has a 1% chance and the… Continue

The economy and your alopecia

There are indications that the nearly universal economic downturn is going to last much longer and probably get even worse than most economists and other experts will officially proclaim.

Have these abysmal economic conditions altered the way in which you cope with your alopecia?

In other words, do you now find yourself spending less on wigs, make-up, counseling, or perhaps even travel to distant support group meetings?

Or, do you now find yourself trying harder…

Hair Obsession!

Has anyone else out there tuned in to any of last week’s Today Show series on women and hair, titled “It’s All About Hair”? I happened to catch the Thursday, June 3rd piece discussing why women are obsessed with their hair. I’d like to share some of the thoughts and responses I found myself sharing with the television.

According to a poll cited by The Today Show, women in the U.S. spend $7.5 billion/year on hair care products alone, and according to a British survey, the average… Continue

Look what the postman brought me today

This is my new hair this morning. It's a synthetic top piece, whereas my one before was human hair and cost £400. his one has more shape. I'm a little concerned though as the front layers are really "choppy" and i can't straighten it as its not heat resistant - will they flatter over time? Also my boyfriend commented that it's really shiny - does this also fade?

I need to move one of the clips as at the mo it sits on my big… Continue

Regrowing?

Spring has brought some seeds back into my head too I guess, suddenly some blonde feathery hairs have sprouted out of my head!

Not everywhere on my head, not on the sides but it's better than nothing, right?

But not only are they making a comeback on top of my head, my sideburns might be coming back too! Now I can maybe finally grow my beard and walk around with a beard and (maybe) bald head, that's cool ;D hehe

And it doesn't stop there, no no.. I feel some stubbles on my… Continue

Inspiration and Courage from ‘Across the Pond’!

All over the world, there are women blazing a trail towards more acceptance for women with medical hair loss. Danielle Baer is one such brave beauty from ‘across the pond’. Danielle, who lost all of her hair at age 18, speaks on British television about the impact Alopecia has had on her. She explains that she grieved the loss of her hair but now actually likes the way she looks bald. Sadly, though she feels comfortable with her baldness, she feels… Continue

Bald Love

MOTH AND BUTTERFLY by Terese Weir

Ever look in an empty cocoon as a most glorious butterfly leaves it? I’ll bet there’s a mirror in it.

When a woman loses her hair, which for her has been a safe haven and the only part of her body she truly believes is spectacular, she desperately wants to trust that her husband loves her for who she is, not for the dead protein on the top of her head. But when rage replaces reason, no soft whisper or kiss at the back of her now hairless neck is… Continue

A Great Quote!

I heard this on some home and garden TV show today, but I feel like it really applies to all of us here who are dealing with some form of alopecia....especially if at one point you had hair and unexpectedly lost it.

"Let go of your old self image so you can start loving yourself as you are today."

This quote really stuck with me. One of the hardest things about having female pattern baldness for me has been remembering how thick and blonde my hair used to be and…

Neon Green Wigs and Barbies

I have a slightly funny story today:)

So, on facebook, Alopecia Areata requested my friendship. I said yes and decided to check out the profile. Apparently, there is a herbal hair growth treatment that is all natural or whatever. I decided to humor them and went on to the site that ws posted. Gosh, I was in for a shock. 12000 dollars for one year of this treatment, that probably doesn't work. I'm trying to save money for band camp! I would rather keep losing my hair than…
