Shock, pain and raw emotions...the good the bad and the ugly

I have been losing the most hair ever lately. One shower episode lead to two full handfull of hair plus two brush fulls. It was strange I didn't cry. But...my husband took a look at the back of my hair the other day. He was pointing out where all the spots were. I asked him to take me up to the mirror to show me...I was shocked and devastated. The back of my head looked as though a lawn mower had attacked it...awful. I bawled...I mean just bawled. It was a down to the bottom of my toes bawl… Continue

I'm curious if anyone has gone to one of the centers locations and what kinds of things do they do to further the research of our condition.

Coming Out Bald at the Synagogue - What the Bible Says About Baldness

Hi everyone,

I want to share with you something I did this morning in front of the congregation at our synagogue. Though I go everywhere bald, one place I hadn't done so was at services at the temple. Every Saturday morning when we go, I've worn one of my scarves. Until this morning!

Today's reading from the Torah (Old Testament - Leviticus ch. 13) is about skin diseases, baldness, and treatment by the ancient priests in Israel. I couldn't pass up this opportunity to… Continue

Guess I'm gonna have another round of hormone blood tests, because my doc insists on it. They're looking for hypothyroid and epinephros problems and stuff, but all I'm concerned about is my hair. I know this is kind of shallow, but what? I'm a girl;) My hair means a lot to me. All my life it was curly and silky and thick and now it's suddenly getting thinner and thinner, and here I am - spending hours in front of the mirror every morning swearing like a sailor trying to hide a bald patch my… Continue

Buying a Freedom Wig in the UK

Hi All!
I've recently decided to purchase a Freedom Wig and i'm trying to find out as much as possible before i go ahead with it all. Just wanted to know if anyone has purchased a Freedom Wig recently and what their experiences were, good and bad. I've found a couple of places in the UK that supply the freedom wig but if anyone has any advice or recommendations it would be really helpful.
Thanks, Melinda

Need some good advise for my 4yr old son as more kids are inquiring making him sad....

I'm 35 years old and my son who is 4 years old and has alopecia since he was 1 years old. He received a new immunization shot at 1 and lost his hair, brows and lashes completely. I've been giving my son homeopath medicine during the last 2 years and he finally got his brows and lashes back. The top of his head is lightly patchy. He has been oblivious to his hair loss until recently when little kids in daycare inquire. This makes him sad and I am looking for support that I can offer in order to… Continue

Hair color and alopecia areata

I am curious if any one has colored their hair and found that to be a trigger for alopecia areata (Or made alopecia worse) Beautician colored my hair in Dec. and a few days later my hair started to fall out in 2 new spots. Just starting to get a few hairs back after 4 months. A few weeks ago found a new spot on the back of my head. Not sure if the hair color had anything to do with it. Would love to have my gray roots colored, but I am afraid of causing more spots to appear. One derm told me Not… Continue

Take Off That Hat

At the end of my meal, the waitress says with a big smile, "Take off that hat!" I'm not sure why I chose to wear a hat today, but her statement was a pleasant surprise.

I have chosen to "live bald". No wigs and occasional hats. When I first lost all my hair, I wondered what strangers thought of my choice to go bald--can she not afford a wig or she must be really sick. But now I am so comfortable being bald and sharing my life with alopecia.

My encounter with the…

McHappy Day

I am a manager at McDonalds. Started there when my second daughter was born as the hours worked out quite well, figured if I was going to spend a bunch of time there I may as well make some money at it and work my way up as much as I can, if nothing else it will look better on a resume when I want to get back to working a "real" job... lol (I find that comment particularly funny because I think I have worked harder there than I ever have in my life) Anyways, I am pleased to announce that I am… Continue

Hi there.:)

Hi,

I'm Liz. I've had Alopecia Aerate for.... about 9-10 years now, (I've not really been counting!) And thats okay :) It's been good, and it's been bad, but thats life! School was hard, primary was fine, but moving to secondary school was tough, but you get passed the staring and the awkward questions, and eventually my hair grew enough so that it would hide the patches.

But yet again AA strikes, and yesterday I decided to just get rid of it! I feel in control now!! Yes, people… Continue

My new hair?

So I guess it's about time I posted a blog especially since I've gotten my first hairpiece for a month now!

I've had alopecia areata since i was 13, at first I noticed that the hairline on my temples were reciding but I did not take much notice of it until one day my cousin decided she wanted to style my hair and freaked out as she discovered some bald spots. At first I told my parents but they ignored me until months later when it started getting worse and thought it could be… Continue

"I'd still talk to you!" (reactions from friends)

I have typically been the person who doesn't talk about alopecia but lately I been getting better at this and have been talking more about it to close friends. I must say while I don't regret telling my friends, the reactions have been......disappointing.

Like one friend asked if it just affects the hair on my head. I told her that at this point its just my head but it could progress to my entire body. Her response? "I'd still talk to you!" I think she meant it to kind of lightened… Continue
