Great children's book on avoiding teasing

I read this to a class of third graders while substitute teaching yesterday. Being that the whole incident starts with a bad hair day, I thought I would pass on a review I saw online (below). The book is Simon's Hook, by Karen Gedig Burnett. If AW allows the promotion of a particular book to grown-up newbies, I'm sure a book for all kids would also be allowed...yes? Here's the description:

Simon's Hook; A Story About Teases and Put-downs (Paperback)

When Simon is teased by his…

First (and 2nd) wig!

Hello anyone who might read this. Well, I did it--I cut off my hair today! I now have two beautiful wigs. I will post some photos tomorrow hopefully. They will still take some getting used to--I look VERY different and I am unaccustomed to having brushable/combable hair! But so far so good. I cried a lot while it was being cut but once it was over I felt free. The wig is very nice and light. Now for shampoo/conditioner... and hats! Oh, how long it's been since I've worn a hat.

Just got my eyebrows tattooed on and loving it

Losing my eyebrows was like losing my hair all over again. However, after a year I finally got use to the look and liked it. It actually made my eyes look bigger and brighter. Last year I drew them on when I wore a wig for work, but it took so much time. Getting them tattooed on was a huge step for me, but I have to say that I love them. The woman used hair like strokes and it looks good. It was a shocker at first, but I am glad I did it now. I will post a picture after the touch up…

I went to the doc. today for my usual injections and I was informed by the doctor that she is seeing regrowth !!!!!!! I have not heard this in a really long time, so hopefully it will stay this way cause my hair tends to be good for many weeks/months at a time then bad for an extended period of time.
I am soooooooooooooo happy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update on my medications and treatments - part 2

Hello,

I forgot to add in my last post that I have been suffering from some of the many side effects of the Plaquenil.

Some side effects include, tummy trouble, blue marks on your skin, depression, mood swings, sun sensitivity, vivid dreams and lower appetite. The only ones I seem to be suffering from are sun sensitivity and vivid dreams.

I have always been fair and sun sensitive but boy is it worse now!!! I feel like a smoldering vampire (like on tv) when my skin is…

Dying hair

I am new at this and actually still waiting for an appointment with the derm. My family dr. said it is alopecia. My question is...I still have a fair amount of hair (so far I have 6 round spots and thinning of the hair) and the rest of it needs dyed. I'm just wondering if it is a good idea to dye it or not. Just don't want to make it fall out any faster then it already. Thanks for any ideas :)

Two years since I've been here!

So it's been two years since I've been here. Last blog I wrote I stop drawing on eye brows.... Hehe.. I am excited to say I fully have my brows back! Completely. I pray this time it stays but if it goes I have the choice to draw on or keep off.

One of the very things I have enjoyed from 2010 till now is FREEDOM. I have been bald and happy instead of hiding being bald and depress. Of course there are days I wish I had nice flowing hair, or I could hide in a crowd with a long hair wig.… Continue

How to take a photo without the camera or cell phone showing in the picture

Eyeball it and hold the camera at arm's length, as if someone else was using it. You can even set it for close-up. The camera will be backwards, but you can still manage to hit a button, right? Try several times until you get a keeper: you can delete the rest.

Aim from above to hide a double chin. Watch out for mirrors or bathroom junk in the background, or fountains spurting water out of the top of your head visually. Only keep the ones with smiles, flattering lighting, good…

More hair news on Gabby Douglas

I Didn't know how to get the article from Yahoo on to this website but everyone should try to read it. People should think about how lucky they are to have hair instead of this.
The article is called
Gabby Douglas gets a makeover, fueling more ridiculous debate about her hair

Update on my treatment and medication

Thought I would give everyone an update on my status incase it may help in some way. :)

It has been about 4months since I was diagnosed with LPP (scarring alopecia) and started my course of medication and treatments. They say that we have caught it early on, although I am at the point where I need to do strategic combovers and hours of prep to get my hair in an acceptable style. (I am pretty thin on the top of my head and can't do a side or middle part at all any more.)

I… Continue

Bratz beats Mattel to bald doll

And I noticed on the www.naaf.org conference photo album that the little girls got this doll there:

MGA's Bratz Dolls One-Up Barbie On Going Bald

There’s a difference between a true investment and a half-hearted effort. And this distinction is illustrated in the saga of the bald doll.

In January, cancer advocate Jane Bingham launched a Facebook page asking Mattel to introduce a bald version of Barbie to support children…

Need help with fingernails

I am new to this site. I was diagnosed with alopecia eleven years ago. For the most part I was getting injections in my eyebrows but in the past year I have lost all the hair on my head and all eyelashes. Recently I have seen my fingernails deteriorate. they are brittle, with nail pitting. All of them look awful. I have been taking biotin since April and have not seen positive results. The dermatologist gave me cream but that has not worked. Does anyone have advice? I am very self conscious… Continue

For those of you who have significant others, I was wondering how did you tell them you had alopecia, how long did you wait, and what was their reaction? Thanks in advance :)

Going back to school el natual?

Well "summer" is over. My daughter was home schooled last year. She thinks she is ready to go back to elementary school.

We live in a time when openness or "coming out" is accepted. This summer she gained a great deal of confidence. Going to public places without a hat or wig. She wants to go to 4th grade without anything on her head! We did manage to stay in contact with some of her friends from previous school years. She is fine without anything on head wile playing with them at…

Very sad today... and my mom

Hello anyone who might read this. Well, after several weeks of research, discussion, tears, and more, I have finally, finally decided what my first wig will be and confirmed my appointment to come in and have my head shaved and the piece applied. In a way, I feel relief--the anticipation part will soon be over and I can get down to the business of dealing with what it's like to be in this new phase. I admire you all who have been on this journey so much.

For me, one thing that is…

Texas heat

Hope I am doing this right! I am Grandma with alopecia--a few years now. In San Antonio for years now, I would love to meet with others in San Antonio. See that I missed the early August gathering. Please keep me in mind for next one.

2nd dermatologist appointment

This morning was my second appointment with my dermatologist. The first time I went I had one spot that was the size of a dollar coin and I was very frightened. The doctor wanted to give me a shot into my head but when I asked would they numb the area he said no thus I declined.I am TERRIFIED of needles and I do mean terrified. Why? Because my father was sick from my birth until I was 11 when he died and had to get blood drawn ALL the time. He talked about how painful it was after a while…

“A cat with alopecia found starving by the roadside in the rain is in need of a new home.

William, a white Persian, is being nursed back to health by staff at the national adoption centre run by Cats Protection at Chelwood Gate, near Haywards Heath.

The 12-year-old was found severely underweight and in an “appalling” condition when spotted struggling to find…
