The Bald Bride: My Alopecia Story - Part 2

I went to work that fateful morning in a daze. My mind just repeated itself over and over again. “What is going on?” I had no idea where my hair had gone or why it fell out so quickly.

I didn’t see any excessive clumps of hair on my pillow. Didn’t notice any unusual large amounts in the drain after my shower. Although I did note that I had noticed more hair than usual in the drain for the last few months. But with as much hair as I had, I didn’t think anything of it until…

New treatment for alopecia

Hey everyone! I've had alopecia for about 10 years and have tried every thing... literally everything. I've done laser, creams, injections, shampoos, but nothing really seemed to help me. My hair fell out almost like the seasons my dad always says. The spring and summer my hair always grew in and in the winter and fall alot of my hair fell out. So, I've been using squaric acid. The acid isn't FDA approved yet, but me and my dermotolgist said its worth a shot. So between 4-5 months mostly all…

Bald and burning scalp sensation

Help - anyone who has experienced this place respond.

It is almost two years since I had the little bit of hair I had left cut, shaved and I began to live my life as an alopecian (I barely had hair). Last week I developed a burning sensation on the back of my head. It looks like I have a sunburn. Initially it looked like a rash, but that went away in two days. It burns like I have a sunburn. I went to my regular doctor thinking perhaps I had shingles. I had chicken pox at 34 years of…

Why so much emphasis on hair and not other style changes?

Every winter I change my hair extensions out and wear a wig. With my puny hair, I feel it is best to give it a rest from extensions, and also at the ranch my own hair with extensions does not hold well in the wind and rain.

I love my wigs, but every year it is the same process of getting used to the comments others make about my new hair. Some people are very kind, others not so much. I have learned from past experience that this goes with the territory.

I can't help but wonder why…

Tape extensions

This is kinda crazy but I am so against wearing a wig. However I was wondering if I could use the seamless hair extensions all over my head to make it more realistic and would stay on for a month or so? Has anyone heard of it or tried it? Its just an idea but if I could do it I would. My mom is a hairdresser so i think she could get them for dirt cheap if not free.

Where do you go from here?

i started noticing about 5 years ago that the hair at my temples started thinning out and breaking off. the pieces will grow to about 2" as of now. then, in july of this year, i started noticing the rapid thinning of the hair on the crown of my head. i went to the dermatologist hoping it would be stress related, but i had a gut feeling it would be genetic. ive always had higher levels of testosterone, so i kind of knew. the dermatologist said that it was, in fact, genetic. androgenic…

Where in the world is Julia?

I have been a busy bee these last couple of years. I started a federally recognized non profit organization for youth writers. I was laid off. I went back to school and completed the program with a 4.0 GPA. My first born graduated high school. Traveled out West for the first time last year and I will be going back again soon. Got certified as a Personal Trainer. Lost some weight. Hustling to pay bills off...it's working. Still married to the BEST man ever, he's so sexy:) Being mommy and…

Trichotillomania, alopecia, and other hairloss

I am sad to say that I've had another relapse, after so many months of not pulling, unfortunately I'm suffering from combination of two different types of hair loss, Trichotillomania, and then Alopecia areata, The parts I don't pull, fall out on their own, the doctor thinks its from so many years of damaging hair follicles and now they just can't handle the weight of my own hair once it grows to a certain point.

I think I've just given up, I'm going to be like this forever, because…

Christmas irony

Yup...

I never win anything. Never. Tuesday I won something - a hairdryer. Yes, you heard correctly. A hairdryer. Is that not the most crazy thing ever? "Hi my hair is falling out, can I have a hairdryer?" ROFL. My hairdresser had a giveaway over the holidays and she entered me in. Bless her heart. It's a professional dryer. Nice one. She uses this hairdryer herself at her salon. I can still use it for now but I had a good laugh when she gave it to me.

She has been such a…

A lot of shenanigans

I have only been diagnosed for oh 3 months now with AGA/TE, but one thing that I am finding a bit annoying is the sheer amount of hair loss shenanigans on the internet.

Try doing a search on YouTube for alopecia. I am looking for genuine people telling their stories. I personally find them helpful and inspiring. However what I mostly find are a lot of videos promoting a product or some dermatologist telling the usual treatment options for alopecia.

My favorite…

When common sense reigns

Everyone on here has those days when they wake up, wash their hair and think "hey, I think it's getting better!" And I for one, being the naturally anxious person that I am, starting getting a giddy, flippity-floppy feeling in my stomach.

This happened to me this morning. To be truthful...I suspect there is some improvement in my hair. And being that I don't know what exactly is going on, there might be for a bit. But I suspect that won't last forever. I sense genetics are against…

Frustrating roller coaster ride

It's been a roller coaster ride with my alopecia over the last 6 weeks. After the fourth visit to the dermatologist, I went to my hometown for 3 weeks. Around that time my biggest bald patch (the size of a matchbox) was not showing any regrowth and the others (7-8 small ones) were all showing some fuzzy growth. But 3 weeks at home did me some good. (Was it the lack of stress because of being away from office? Makes me wonder if stress was my trigger. Lately work pressure has been giving me…

Herbal and natural treatment success stories?

I have had alopecia areata for about 6 years now and had lost most of the hair on my head, but am at the stage now where i have several patches of dark hair, several patches of white fuzzy hair and only a couple with no hair. This gives me hope but i want more progress and am determined to make this happen.

I am not interested in steroid injections anymore or chemical medications so I am starting to try different herbal and natural remedies.

I want to hear your success (or failure)…

Regrowth anyone?

Hi Everyone,

I have been experiencing hairloss which they are calling Diffuse Alopecia Areata and it is severe. It began with severe itchyness which lead me to finding a spot on the back of my head sometime in March. Shortly after that my hair began to fall out all over my head. Actally I'm not sure if it fell out or broke off, I never really seemed to have "bald" spots. It did spread to my pubic area, my underarms, and my eyebrows became a little spotty. I evenually had to shave my… Continue

1 in 100

I recently became involved in a book project about breast cancer survivors. Although I don't have cancer, those with Alopceia often are approached with that very question. The author invited me to participate in order to represent one of the struggles many women go through in dealing with this disease. I'm also thrilled at the fact that this book will help bring more awareness about this condition. It was very empowering to write my story and recall the stages I went through on my journey.… Continue

Scalp Injections/HELP!

Hello!

Here is my alopecia story...

My hair started falling out in April... at first I thought it was from stress ( my dad had a stroke) but, we now found out it is alopecia. It is now September and my hair is still falling out. I got my first steriod injections 2 1/2 weeks ago and I am rubbing a liguid perscription on my spots at least twice a day. I am in my senior year of high school and this is really upsetting me. How long until I can expect some progress? In some… Continue

Longing for a cure - Defeated by alopecia

It is amazing how many emails and messages I get about other organizations dealing with alopecia. My canned response has always been, "We are stronger together then we are apart." I mean this, I am not just saying it to be politically correct. When I founded CAP I did so because I wanted more for my daughter then what was out there. The oldest and largest is NAAF and was the only thing I could fine in 2003. They had the annual conference but that was all until they incorporated Charlie's… Continue

Human Hair Wig - It's a love-hate relationship

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all doing well...coping well with this most incovenient and expensive condition. I haven't been on here in a while. I am hoping to get some new tips and tricks :) I am still new to this and am grateful that everytime I blog on here I obtain a whole bunch of useful advice!

Over the past few months I got way too frustrated with synthetic wigs...so I bit the bullet and purchased a human hair wig. I was excited...couldn't wait to get it in the mail. A… Continue
