Alopecia
I am 22 yo female, I am losing my identity as each day passes. This horrible condition Alopecia is an Auto Immune Disease that can be caused by stress and worrying or a significant event which has occurred.
At this current point of time I am not coping at all, I struggle with the day to day habits of making my hair look beautiful. Each day I worry that I will wake up from this nightmare with no hair. I feel ugly every morning I look in the mirror. I break down at times…

I have been thinking a lot about balance lately. As I look back on my life the things that seem to work the best and flow naturally were the areas that I found a balance.
When I concentrated on doing what was right for my body and indulged on occasion, it worked. When I tried to be too strict, I would white knuckle it for a few weeks and then fall off the “wagon”…

Some of you have read my descriptions of going to a Balkan music and dance camp, or seen photos on my page of me drumming with bands. If you'd like to hear what the music is like, I just put up 4 tracks from one of the two bands I play with, "Dromia", on my profile page. This is all traditional dance music, some of it in uneven rhythms.
The first (Kalamatiano) is from Greece. I'm playing doumbek (goblet-shaped hand drum). This is in 7/8.
The second (Coceks) is from…

Hi all,
I have been entered into a contest (thanks mom!) on Cityline (Toronto morning show). The contest is for women and is about sharing their stories of "I can achieve." You can go to the link

My story I think is like many of yours (told from my mom's eyes). You can vote daily and what is even better is that each…

Hello Friends,
Sorry I have not been able to check in for a while..I have been busy with life trying to figure things out and make sense of things..So I am guessing I had a good run for about 3 months where my hair did not fall out and now it is back to its ugly self...My hair is starting to fall out again..Seems like it may either be in the same area or damn near close to that area. I now have 3 new small bald spots instead of just the one I had...I also now discovered that I have…

This segment on the Colorado news, says it all. Yes, having alopecia at Any point in life is extremely difficult. But children are just starting out in their lives. I am grateful for having alopecia in my adult life; I was already "me" and secure, thankfully. How much more difficult it is for children. This is why I organized my event "Musicians for Children's Alopecia Project Benefit" to be held at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, 9/16/2011, 7p-11p. An excellent night of music, awareness which…

For those of you who don't know our story... my 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with AA in the middle of April and initially lost about 80% of her hair. We shaved her head and now with all the regrowth, she has about 70% so I would say that is quite significant... just praying it sticks. We took her to see a homeopathic doctor a month ago and did an allergy test as well as an absorption test and we found out that she has a severe allergy to milk and casein as well as moderate allergies to egg…

Have you ever walked down the road, sat in a restaurant, or been in Safeway and seen someone who's wearing a wig? Most of us are hard to spot because we have spent years trying to make ourselves look like everyone else... but much like LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgendered) have "Gay-dar" I think those of us with Alopecia have "wig-dar". What I'm worried about is that I'm perpetuating the fear of being discovered.
I know for me personally I prefer to tell my story than be outed…

At this point his Alopecia is limited to one eyebrow. Even with it being his eyebrow he is having a difficult time talking about it and does not like to hear me discuss it. Is this limited to just this area, will it continue to his other, his head.. What can be expected as anything I have read or seen it seems it does not just limit itself to an area for long. Am I wrong, am I missing something?
I would just like to chat with people whom can give real life experience answers for a…

So I just opened an account on facebook, which I'm starting to regret. On my profile picture I'm wearing my wig, and I love that picture so much because it was so hard to get a good picture with it. On my camera, my hair came out too shiny, and it look really fake. So I finally took one on my phone and loved it.
Before I got a wig, I asked my best friend to go with me to a wig shop because I didn't know what to look for. At the time, she was dating some guy and I guess mentioned that…

Just found a website called Good Wishes and they are giving away complementary scarves and head wraps. Go to
www.goodwishesscarves.org
Click on request a scarf and you can either email them, call 1-888-884-3653, or download the request form and fax it back with 3 scarf options. Out of the 3 you choose, they will mail one out to you free of charge. They said it'll take about 3 weeks before I'll receive it. I ordered mine today, go and get…

For those of you who don't know about it, International Alopecia Day is an annual event that got started right here on Alopecia World a couple of years ago.
It's a day to celebrate who we are, be proud, raise awareness among non-Alopecians, and connect with other people with hair loss. Here's the Group page where you can join:…

FYI - I've added a track from my band to my profile page under "My Music". This is what I do since Alopecia stopped running my life. :-)
(I'm the vocalist. My bf is on bass, guitar, and percussion. The sax player is freakin' mazing!)

Just like being thin, society puts too much emphasis on hair and hairstyles, especially the younger you are. As you age, it is considered natural to begin losing hair (just strictly from Androgenic Alopecia let alone other forms). Nevertheless, hair is way overrated. Unfortunately, Hollywood and advertising has effectively set the societal norm that having hair is what defines beauty, youth and/or masculinity. This is not true. The reality is, having hair or not makes no difference whether on…

Ok.... so when I first started to accept that I was losing my hair and it was not going to come back, I thought, well at least wearing wigs and scarves will be easier to maintain. Boy was I wrong!!! I thought that I could just slap on any kind of wig and go. There is human hair, synthetic hair, straight, curly, short, long, lace front, mono top, vacuum, priced from $40.00 to $5000.00. Good Lord! At least with my hair I could put it in a ponytail or bun, where it down, straight or curly, it was…
