Not sure what to do

So I have been bald since 09/02/10 and haven't worn a wig (except on Halloween) and I don't wear scarves. I have random strangers coming up to me telling me how beautiful I am and how well I pull off my "haircut". Well last night my step father says to me "Maybe you should buy a wig to wear when you go out with Jeremy (my boyfriend). He might feel uncomfortable being out with you without your hair, you should really think about his feelings." First off, I have NO idea where that came from. My… Continue

Not again...please, not again

Things have been going so well. All the hair has grown back in my bald spots over the past few months with the help of cortisone injections and a tapered oral prednisone treatment. I'm all the way down to 5mg prednisone every other day. I have a derm appointment on Friday and I really thought it would be my last for a long time.

But yesterday, I looked at one of my former bald spots, just to check out the regrowth. . . and I'm pretty sure I've discovered a new spot :.(. I can't… Continue

To wig or not to wig?

Lately I've been finding myself less and less wanting to wear my wig, hat's, and bandannas but I am having trouble going out in public without them. I can't help but feeling like people are going to be mean to me. I have gone out in public a few times with nothing on my head however I still have this uncontrollable anxiety about doing this regularly as I want to do. I'm wondering if anyone else had anxiety or reservations about going out in public being bald and if so what you did to overcome… Continue

Well, that wasn't very nice

So as I said in my past blog, my hair is gone again. People at my job for the most part all know I have Alopecia, I can't give it to them, and I don't hide my head under scarves and hats and wigs, its just not me. I'm comfortable with myself and the way I look...so anyways I work in the mailroom of a large government building, so I see lots of people a day. This guy from our IT department, that I see a LOT since hes 2 offices down from me and is always shipping computer equipment, came in and… Continue

"I like that hair cut"

So I know a lot of you get the cancer question a lot, but I keep getting the "I love your hair cut" and "wow, I would NEVER be that bold to cut off all my hair!" Well my hair was down to the middle of my back not too long ago, and if it was up to me, I wouldnt have this hair cut! A delivery driver just came to my work, NEVER seen him in my life, and the first thing he says is, "Hey...I like the hair cut". I guess I should feel good that people actually like me looking like Sinead O'Conner with… Continue

Falling back out

So my head has started itching more since I've been letting my hair grow in and I just went to scratch the back of my head and found that 2 of the spots where I had re-growth, are completely bald again :( I've been Ok with being bald, I haven't cried once. But I think now its just getting REALLY ridiculous. It teases me with beautiful re-growth, only to make it to like an inch and then start falling out again. I told myself not to get excited about it, I should learn to listen to myself a… Continue

4 wigs and a new boyfriend

Way back in the spring I had been so proud of myself for finding some really super cheap foam heads to put my wigs on. I hardly wear wigs so it's important for them to keep their shape for the off chance that I do feel like wearing one. My bedroom isn't the largest and my space is a little compromised so I took the cowboy hat off my TV (even though it was really cool cause sometimes it looked like the actor was wearing it when they do close ups of their faces) and placed my hairy heads there… Continue

'Why do you shave your head?'

I started to post this as a response to the question “Why do you shave your head?,” which Pam Fitros asked this Alopecia World group. I posted this blog instead because I wanted to share my answer with the entire community.

Back in 2010 I saw an advertisement for “It’s All Good Hair,” a “natural hair” workshop and celebration sponsored by the Shrine…

It's about to be raining on my bald head

So this is going to be pretty short and random. Its 2 weeks ago today that I shaved my head, and the first day since then that it has rained. I was told rain feels really good on a bald head by like 4 different people. I asked if it was like taking a shower...but I was told no, its different, LOL I don't see how, but soon, I will find out. I feel like a dork, but I cannot wait for work to be over so I can walk to my car and feel rain on my bald head, LOL. Oh the little things in life that bring… Continue

'What's so brave about being bald?'

How would you respond to the following quote by Gail Porter?

I've just come back from Vietnam where I did a trek for the Children's Trust, a charity for children with brain injuries and life-threatening injuries. So it does help you put things in perspective. Some magazine, which I won't name, put me up for bravery awards. What's so brave about being bald?…

Stepping out bald

So I shaved my head thursday night after a rather large clump of hair fell out and I decided I couldn't take it anymore. Friday I went out, and wore a scarf, and got looks, and a really sweaty head. Friday night my boyfriend got into town (he lives 4 hours south) and he had also shaved his head (such the sweetie). On saturday we decided to go out and he told me "Don't wear the scarf for me or anyone else. I love you for you, and I think you look beautiful the way you are." (Hes WAY to sweet,… Continue

Developing a new spot and awkward friends

This morning I was admiring my hair and how well I've managed to disguise the large bald spot on the back of my head by wearing my hair kinda wavy and messy.....when I spotted a new area on the crown of my head. It's about the size of a quarter right now and growing. :( I have been experiencing pain in the site for a while but couldn't figure out why. Now I know that it's related to losing hair. This really stinks! I will have to get really creative to cover this one.

Alopecia is… Continue

A good way to have fun with a bald head

Hi again

Sorry again if there are any misspellings or grammer mess ups. Anyway I am going to talk about a few ways of having fun with your bald head. One way I had fun with my bald head in school and outside of school was when holidays came around I would yet the other kids paint hearts, clovers, eggs, christmas trees, menorahes, and many other things. lol It was great and the other kids and everyone else thought it was awesome!! I would also let the younger kids put stickers on my head.… Continue

A little eyebrow history!

Have you ever considered why your eyebrows are such an important feature on your face? Consider this - almost 50% of communication is done non-verbally. We tend to use many parts of our body to communicate, however, our face is arguably the most expressive part of our body. Our eyes alone can reveal many emotions such as anger, fear, or sadness but one feature that is often overlooked is the important role our eyebrows play in our ability to communicate non-verbally. Our eyebrows are actually… Continue

Stable times

Well, it's been a while since I posted my last blog. I've been busy with school and not so busy with my hair... or without my hair, haha.

I'm still bald and my legs are still becoming smoother, as well as my arms.

In general, I don't really care for my almost hairless arms and legs. What I do care about are my eyebrows. Those I don't want to lose, and I'm taking measures to prevent to let them.

I still use the fluid 'DPCP' on my eyebrows, and it works! Sometimes they fall… Continue

I finally did it - I shaved my head!

Last night I caught sight of myself in the mirror with my real hair pulled back in a pony tail with my many bald spots showing through. And I thought, that's it - it's time, I look hideous. I discussed it with my hubby who played devil's advocate and stressed to me that there was no turning back once I did it so to make sure I was sure. As he put it, I can still throw on a hat and go to the store (with my real hair) or around the house.....but you can't hide bald!

So we started off… Continue

Bald Love

MOTH AND BUTTERFLY by Terese Weir

Ever look in an empty cocoon as a most glorious butterfly leaves it? I’ll bet there’s a mirror in it.

When a woman loses her hair, which for her has been a safe haven and the only part of her body she truly believes is spectacular, she desperately wants to trust that her husband loves her for who she is, not for the dead protein on the top of her head. But when rage replaces reason, no soft whisper or kiss at the back of her now hairless neck is… Continue

A very reaction-y kind of day today

I've been going out bald in public for ooh, about three weeks now and have had a variety of responses from strangers. Going out for dinner in a very arty venue - nobody bats an eyelid. Sitting behind a small child on the bus - slack jawed staring, although in a very innocent, curious way. Walking through town with a friend on a Saturday night - being told by an utterly plastered man than he admired my individuality. Wandering through Primark - people looking and then trying not to look and… Continue
