How to take a photo without the camera or cell phone showing in the picture

Eyeball it and hold the camera at arm's length, as if someone else was using it. You can even set it for close-up. The camera will be backwards, but you can still manage to hit a button, right? Try several times until you get a keeper: you can delete the rest.

Aim from above to hide a double chin. Watch out for mirrors or bathroom junk in the background, or fountains spurting water out of the top of your head visually. Only keep the ones with smiles, flattering lighting, good…

Bratz beats Mattel to bald doll

And I noticed on the www.naaf.org conference photo album that the little girls got this doll there:

MGA's Bratz Dolls One-Up Barbie On Going Bald

There’s a difference between a true investment and a half-hearted effort. And this distinction is illustrated in the saga of the bald doll.

In January, cancer advocate Jane Bingham launched a Facebook page asking Mattel to introduce a bald version of Barbie to support children…

Understanding each other on AW

I read this online today in preparing Olympic watchers for travel in England (Google this headline if the link doesn't pop up here):

The nation explained for visitors to the Olympic Games

Each 212-word section covered things like accents, trains, pub rounds, etc. But the parts about bad puns, even in serious newspapers, or self-deprecating humor as part of the national culture brought to mind some…

Break-up culprit for new alopecians?

Don’t Let Depression Destroy Your Relationship

[I think sometimes we get caught up so much in our own "stuff" that we forget others want us to be vibrant, present and exciting for THEM. They often do not know what to do when WE are ocupied by thoughts, and they just bail out rather than wait, talk or admit their own feelings...especially males who are confounded by females, impatient or judgmental. This article may apply to those alopecians obsessed with and depressed…

Could pesticides trigger alopecia?

June 19th, 2012

07:11 AM ET

From CNN report today:

Watch out for the 2012 'Dirty Dozen'

Apples and celery are still agriculture’s dirtiest pieces of produce, according to the Environmental Working Group’s annual “Dirty Dozen” report. The report names the fruits and vegetables ranking highest in pesticide residue.

Cucumbers were added to the 2012 Dirty Dozen, while Kale and collard greens were moved from the list to join green beans in a new…

Alopecia Manifesto

Here's mine. What's yours?

Okay. I have had to finally admit to myself, my mirror, my family, my friends and any loved ones that I am an alopecian. Now, it is known. It was always in my genes, waiting to be triggered. It doesn't matter if it is one small spot or over my whole body; it IS THERE, and I will always have these genes. So, until/unless a remedy is found in my lifetime, I am free to do what an alopecian needs to do, including:

AVOID wind, swimming and some activities…

Dear Abby Bombed Today

Boy, did the person who took over for Dear Abby ever get it wrong today! I read this in the paper while having my oil changed, and was shocked at how misinformed the advice writer was/is. How shall we put her and the poor military wife right on alopecia? Obviously, the steroids are the shots...right? Read on. You can respond to www.DearAbby.com

Speaking to students about alopecia

I am asking any of you who have decided to give speeches to schools or classes...what questions usually come up? What information do you include in your presentations? I am thinking of doing this, as an alopecian since 1963 and as a teacher now...I think I can help.

Do no harm

Today in church, the speaker discussed kids who have dreams of negative actions on themselves, but who time and again were just found to be having such dreams when faced with a fear or developmental stage they didn't think they could overcome. Being me, of course, I took notes as how this might manifest itself with distraught people on AW. Here is what I came up with as he talked:

What a person really wants to escape is the emotional pain, fear, assumptions or embarrassment associated…

Fiona

I just watched Shrek again while teaching, and had the thought that many women and girls on AW are stressing like Fiona...afraid of what nightfall will reveal. Are we thinking that we will become ogres (or, Cinderellas) when the wig and make-up come off? What, or who, are we missing when so absorbed, besides our own true, raw selves? We may not be noticing REAL people while waiting for hair magic to happen. Personally I am getting used to my current incarnation at night. Who ever said I… Continue

Mourning Long Hair?

I saw the Disney movie about Rapunzel called Tangled this week. Seems to me this is your typical comment on the Society of Hair: girl entraps guy with long blond hair; mother gains feelings of youth and status by using the daughter's hair for her own ends; long hair trips up girl on the Road to Progress, Freedom and Learning; and girl becomes her own true… Continue
