How has being bald affected you? That is if it has affected you. Mind you I do think it must have even if it is only the fact that you notice how cold it is much more now than when you had hair.
Many of the websites for Alopecia document how many people are stressed about having Alopecia and that they desperately worry about their hair growing back. I must admit that when I first had alopecia I was concerned about the situation but once I shaved my head I stopped worrying and found…

I've never read any alopecia specific books before, that is until I got my copy of
"Metamorphosis" by Julia Crittendon. Of course my portion of the book was excellent LOL But seriously, it was one of those things I could have writen a hundred times over and never been completely satisfied with. It was wonderful to hear about everyone's battle and recovery, if you will, over alopecia. It is a very inspiring and motivational book and I encourage anyone with alopecia to give it a…

Here is the story of a Bad Hair Day. It was Halloween, and my husband was taking my daughter around the neighborhood, leaving me to answer the door and shovel sugar to the monsters, princesses, and other assorted Trick or Treaters.
Most of the kids travel in packs, but towards the end of the nights' visitations a single girl, around 12 or so, rang the bell.
"Trick or Treat!"
She took a piece of candy, smiled at me brightly and said, "Hey, that's a great fright…

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW
Whoa, doggies. It’s finally the end of 2008. I have to say, I’m not sorry to see this year go. What I am sorry to see go is my hair.
I am in the two percent of the population who has alopecia. “What is that?” you might ask. Alopecia is an auto-immune disorder of unknown origin which causes one’s body to think its hair follicles are a foreign body and begin launching scud missiles to destroy the enemy. It is not hereditary, it is not contagious. It…

I know I know I haven't been around a lot lately ... I'm going to make an honest effort to try harder in 2009. I'm SO SO excited for this new year - I feel energized. Plus I'm ready to reveal my exciting stuff.... *drum roll*. I have convinced my husband to really dedicate to weight loss *claps*. In fact we've even started a youtube channel that will track our progress. I'm thrilled that he's agreed to this, because making a public announcement of your goals is proven to increase success rate.…

The last few nights I've been having vivid dreams in which my hair (slowly disappearing) takes some dramatic way of falling out. Each time it's different, but each time it's horrible. It has been bumming me out, so I decided to be prepared. I went to Ebay last night and bought (actually, bid on auctions in their last seconds) two short dark, brown wigs, not unlike my current hair cut. They were REALLY cheap ($20 each delivered to my doorstep). I really have no intention of wearing them, but I…

The morning sun crept over the Three Sisters peak of the Gabilan Mountains and shone down on a glorious New Year's Day gift for Quicksilver Farm: Two Navajo Churro lambs stood heathy and strong next to their mother. One is pure white, which is good if it's a female because I need more white wool for the fabulous rugs I'm crafting, and the other is Three Grey Hills, which means it has what looks like a white skullcap on an all-black body. (Perhaps it has alopecia under the cap?)
These…

As today marks the first day of the new year I thought I would continue with a New Year tradition - the making of a New Year resolution. In the past I have not kept my resolutions and I think that the lack of reasonability is to blame. My cure this year is to make one that I am actually capable of keeping. I resolve to teach all that I come in contact with in the New Year about Alopecia Areata. My goal is to change the stigma that a bald woman is either crazy or has cancer. I want to use my…

I have always loved having my hair cut and styled. From the exotic, yummy scents of shampoos and potions, to the total luxury of a scalp massage, to the feeling of sitting back and being pampered, I have wallowed in it all. Now it's more of a pain because I am anxious and uneasy.
At home, shampooing my hair is no longer the delight it once was either. I wash my hair in the shower, and I used to love to stand in the warmth and feel the dirt disappearing. (Since I live on a farm with…

So I figured I should add an update since wearing my first sleep cap. I LOVE IT! I can keep my apartment at arctic temps and still be warm while I'm sleeping. I enjoy wearing it while I'm staying in for the day too. It makes a much bigger difference than I would have expected. I also bought my very first hat - not just first Alopecia hat but first hat ever. It's made for hair loss so it fits my entire head down to my neck. It's so cute. I'm actually enjoying it while wearing my wig - it gives…

I just happened upon this great
blog post and article from "Creative Loafing" magazine about the lead MC from Atmosphere, a contemporary hip hop group, who talked about how alopecia affected his artistic career. I didn't find anything about it when I searched Alopecia World, so I figured I'd share it in my debut AW blog post :)
Here's his take, which I think is very poignant and hits on a key…

Whether you are suffering from hereditary baldness or alopecia areata, the key to your successful treatment is to identify the most suitable remedy for your current condition. Although there is no ultimate cure available for most of the known hair loss conditions, some treatments can help you slow down the balding process or even recover a portion of the lost hair. Professional consultation is strongly recommended to start with. Dermatologists will typically prescribe medicinal treatments such…

If you are suffering from early stages of Male Pattern Baldness, then your chances of recovery are very high. It's just that you will need to focus on the right treatments for it in the soonest possible time.

I'm tired of this. I'm sick and tired of having my optimism and hope driven into the dirt by my mother. Every time I talk to her on the phone, I end up in tears. I resent her for making me feel insecure about something that I have no control over. She makes me feel like I'm not doing enough when in reality I've done so much. I feel that if I try one more procedure or method and bring her (and myself) false hopes that it'll just be wasted money and it will wear me out even more. I am still a…

An old man and his son lived in an abandoned fortress on the side of a hill. Their only possession of value was a horse. One day the horse ran away. The neighbours came by to offer sympathy. "That's really bad!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old man.
The next day, the horse returned, bringing with it several wild horses. The old man and his son shut them all inside the gate. The neighbours hurried over. "That's really good!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old…

In one episode of the sitcom Seinfeld, George dated and claimed to have fallen in love with a bald woman named Georgina.
Jerry couldn’t believe his ears and yelled, “How could you possibly love a bald woman?”
“Since when was love about looks?” responded George.
“It’s always been about looks!” shouted Jerry.
Given that my fiancée, Cheryl Carvery, prefers to keep her head shaved bald because…

I was sitting in the lunchroom at work when this cute guy I've been secretly looking at for a little while sat next to me. After finding out that he was a genetics student at the university here I thought I would clarify something for myself (and others as it related to a recent question asked on AW). It actually sparked quite the conversation and we talked about alopecia for a little while before he shyly admitted to having psoriasis (although you'd never know).
Now normally I was…

My wife Mistie just left to go to work as she works the night shift at a local hospital here in Orlando Florida.
She has been making comments here and there about how much hair she is losing recently.
I for the most part pretend that I didn't hear what she said earlier tonight when while getting dressed she mentioned getting a wig because she cannot style her hair to make it hold. Other times I keep reassuring her that she is beautiful and her hair looks great. I can tell she…

I was catching up on my Tivo's episodes of Entourgare (I know...not the most enlightened show) but they mentioned Alopecia twice in one episode. Not really anything about it but just that someone had it which I found strange unless they were obvioulsy trying to bring attention to it. It is awareness month...I was wondering if someone that works on or with the show is affected? I haven't been on this site in a while...Was there any mention of it here? Let me know if you heard…

o.o weerd. i started eating alota sunflower seeds, and less milk. and weee. hair is growing back.
