My story

Hello. My name is Justin Dawson. I am 15 years old & have had Alopecia for about 1 year and 4 months now. It all started in mid February of 2011. I was in my room texting some friends while chatting with my little brother, Brendan. You know how when you are texting, you look with your head down most of the time? Well, that's what I was doing. My brother Brendan pointed out a very small circular bald spot on the crown of my head. I looked in the mirror, but it was too inadequate to see. I…

Venting

So only three months ago I had a small patch, the size of a quarter missing from the back of my head. I was undergoing extreme emotional stress at work and when I went to the doctor, she expressed her concerns that this stress has triggered my hair loss and that I have Alopecia areata. A few weeks go by and more and more hair starts falling out. I finally get an appointment with the dermatologist and by this time the patch size has tripled and expanded to other parts of my head. I have started… Continue

"Uncertainty"

As with most females, my hair looking attractive has always been important to me as far back as I can remember. Even as a young girl I didn't mind the discomfort of sleeping with a headful of pink styrofoam hair rollers if it meant I'd have pretty curls to show off at elementry school the next day. I loved my long hair and thought all girls were supposed to have long hair until I saw the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. I was eleven years old and now wanted my hair to be cut like a… Continue

Transition

I am excited for it to be one week from today. I'll have been "bald" for a full 24-hours by then. Its funny that its been two weeks or so since I noticed my spots got so bad that its time for me to take down what's left of my hair. I decided to go back to my hometown, New York City to my hairdresser of over twenty years to buzz my hair off. It may seem like I'm making a big deal or ritual of all this, but, it is a big deal. I was diagnosed with alopecia areata 18 years ago. Its been slow going.… Continue

The cancer question -- I finally got it

Well, it was bound to happen to me, and today was the day.

Cheryl and I went for a walk and stopped at a local restaurant to order water.

While I was paying, Cheryl stepped away to get a couple of straws just as an older woman tried to touch her and say, "God bless your heart."

Realizing that I saw her, the woman smiled at me and asked without pause, "Does she shave her head, or does she have cancer?"

I immediately responded, "Neither. She has alopecia areata, a…

Breakthrough!

Hey all,

I got an email from the NAAF which had some interesting news I wanted to share with you!

Here is what it said:

Lionel -

Because of your commitment to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, we wanted to alert you to the most exciting news about NAAF funded genetics research to date!

On Thursday, July 1, 2010 this research will be published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. Various media outlets will begin covering the… Continue

Regrowing?

Spring has brought some seeds back into my head too I guess, suddenly some blonde feathery hairs have sprouted out of my head!

Not everywhere on my head, not on the sides but it's better than nothing, right?

But not only are they making a comeback on top of my head, my sideburns might be coming back too! Now I can maybe finally grow my beard and walk around with a beard and (maybe) bald head, that's cool ;D hehe

And it doesn't stop there, no no.. I feel some stubbles on my… Continue

My Thoughts on AA

General Info.

-Had it since I was 3.

-Have never received any treatment whatsoever.

-Hair was very thin when I was diagnosed. And was expect to be completely bald by puberty. That didn't happen.

-Hair has only recently began falling out in a mass quantity.

-Haven't been to a derm. in 10 years.

So, keeping that in mind... I'm sort of caught off guard by my somewhat recent hair 'fallout'. I've always had thin hair, and a few bald spots that I could easily… Continue

Neon Green Wigs and Barbies

I have a slightly funny story today:)

So, on facebook, Alopecia Areata requested my friendship. I said yes and decided to check out the profile. Apparently, there is a herbal hair growth treatment that is all natural or whatever. I decided to humor them and went on to the site that ws posted. Gosh, I was in for a shock. 12000 dollars for one year of this treatment, that probably doesn't work. I'm trying to save money for band camp! I would rather keep losing my hair than…

Telling people

Well, since I got my wig I've become more open with AA, I accept it more and I don't really care what people think of it, everyone I've told it reacted well to it.

Now that I know that I thought it was time to tell my class about it. So last Thursday we had gymnastics. I told the teacher (who's also my mentor guy, do he already knew about everything) and he put the class together on the bench.

He told them that we thought we could trust them and hoped that they wouldn't react in a… Continue

Wig

This morning I went to the hairspecialist, because he had wig I ordered.

Me and my dad got in the car and drove up to Utrecht which is 50 km away from here.

The roads here in this small country are a disaster.. 2 lanes that become 3 lanes and then go back to 2 lanes again 3km further ahead. That causes a lot of accidents and causes a sort of queue on the road..(dont really know the english term, file maybe?) So we drove up there, the one file after the other.

I was pretty excited… Continue

Herbal Versus Medicinal Hair Loss Treatments

Whether you are suffering from hereditary baldness or alopecia areata, the key to your successful treatment is to identify the most suitable remedy for your current condition. Although there is no ultimate cure available for most of the known hair loss conditions, some treatments can help you slow down the balding process or even recover a portion of the lost hair. Professional consultation is strongly recommended to start with. Dermatologists will typically prescribe medicinal treatments such… Continue
