Hair vs Health

I found a lump in my breast on Friday night June 19th. I called my doctor the following Monday. They got me in that afternoon. I was then referred to a regional breast cancer center 30 minutes from where I live. I had to wait a week for my appointment. I had a mammogram and ultrasound done. Well, they found two lumps; one big and the other one small. The radiologist said they both looked like a fibroadenoma (just by looking at the ultrasound) which is a benign breast tumor. They did a core… Continue

R.I.P. M.J. and Farrah

Since we have recently "lost" two cultural icons (at least their corperal forms, but let's not open up that can of worms now!) I felt the need to expound upon this topic which is so effusive everywhere one looks, in this forum as well. Why, you may ask? Farrah Faucett was known for her sexy figure, broad smile, and most notably for her signature blonde, feathered hair style, much copied circa her heyday, The charlie's Angels era. She ended up dying of anal cancer bald and emaciated from chemo,… Continue

One year and it's all gone

Hi everyone. Well I’ve been away from AW for a couple of months. Very business time of year and unfortunately the last few months have been pretty hard regarding the alopecia. It’s been 1 year since we first noticed the spots of hair missing on my son’s head. One year later and son has lost it all - hair, eyebrows, and now the eyelashes are going. He had a few stray hairs left that we finally shaved. He was ok with it until his official unveiling, taking his hat off in front of his baseball… Continue

Internal Dialog

I do understand..cause when I'm not thinking and walk by a mirror...I still after 30 years get a gasp..a shock and revolt feeling like a freak too!

Even though I had hair long ago and the last time was when I was 14 years old...I still remember the feeling..sitting in a car or bus, just with my head near the window..enjoying the wind blow in my face and through my long beautiful hair.

Just today..i looked in the mirror and thought..where does all that positive energy come from, which… Continue

Lost

Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months. I just can't understand why I am still here. I haven't seen my husband for 6 long months and I am almost at my breaking point now. Every morning I wake up alone and a realize once again that I must spend yet another day with out him. Every night I cry myself to sleep. No one understands. My family sees my cry, although I try to stay away when I cry. But, lately I have been crying nearly everyday. My own mother never offers any reason or comfort for… Continue

Help!

I'm almost 42 years old and noticed a very small patch of alopecia on my beard in September 2008. I never really thought anything of it at the time other than it was a bit odd. I don't have a heavy growth and never thought about growing a beard anyway. The patch slowly expanded and is still growing to this day. I did an internet search and tried Calosol beard cream which didn't help.

In January of 2009, my wife noticed another small patch on the back of my head (behind my right ear).… Continue

Seeing the dermatologist!

Hey all i finally saw the dermatologist, who managed to identify the problem straight away.

I have been diagnosed with Pernicious Anemia. The dermatologist said my body isnt producing enough red blood cells and now is depriving my body of oxygen and it cant cope so has stopped growing my hair. They are doing further test to make sure my body hasnt shut down anything inside lol!!!

I was shocked when they diagnosed me with this, but she said with the treatment I have a 80% chance of my… Continue

I am losing my hair again...

I went through those awful cortisone shots a few months ago. I had two rounds of injections done and also used a topical cream for about 2 weeks. The hair started growing back and just a few weeks ago I noticed that not only is the hair falling out again but the spot got bigger! I am so scared that it is going to be worse this time around. Do I get the injections again? Should I just leave it alone?

Check out this article I found today...

Game show for Alopecians?

Another "What If?" came to mind. What if we were to put alopecians on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, where true personality would rule instead of hair? Where the public and private dates had to focus on true acceptance and support, and where the home dates put alopecia forth to family members and best friends? Wouldn't it be great if all 30 candidates had alopecia...and the main person looking for a spouse did, too? What a lesson that would be for America! I invite brainstorming comments… Continue

What if Alopecia is just Opportunity?

What if we got this so we COULD experiment with looks, love, acceptance and changes in ways others cannot? If so, then what is so strange about totally changing what hair texture, color, curliness, etc. we were born with to something totally unique, or to a dream style? What if we are the ones allowed to have fun with hair and not have to constantly get cuts, perms, etc.? What if we are the ones who can get out to work sooner by plopping a wig on? What if we can avoid the gray long after all… Continue

Venting alert!

Hi people, I apologies now for the huge vent!

well basically, it's like this...

I was in town today with my dad, walking around, no hat, no scarf.. it wasn't too sunny then so I thought it would be okay. Just walking through the car park and this mum with her little boy (I'd say about 6/7) in his school uniform walk by. Okay, thats normal...but. This annoying, obnoxious little boy decides to stop dead still, have a really good old gawp at me...and proper comedy cartoon style… Continue

When did you decide to shave it all off???

I recently moved out to Southern California from South Florida. I left my friends, family...comfort zone in the midst of a massive episode of AA. My husband took a job transfer out here. It's gotten exceptionally worse since I've arrived. I've been trying to obtain employment in a very bad economy and really feel that my self-esteem (or lack there of) has played a big role in not finding work.

My question is, at what point did you decide to shave it off and get a wig? Did you find it… Continue

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS

After AU, i never thought of dating anymore. To me, my life is all about career, family and friends. But you never know what's going to happen in future... Recently, I went for vacation in Laos. I joined a tour to go kayaking and tubing at the Nam Song River. That's where i met this tough, good looking, special tour guide. We had a lot of fun together throughout the journey. Although he speaks very little English, surprisingly we both understand each other well. He made my heart thump faster… Continue
