Feeling free

Saturday was a big day for me. I was chief bridesmaid at my cousins wedding and it was also the day I told everyone about alopecia on facebook. It's a little overwhelming the amount of support I've had , finally I feel free to be me and have some fun with it. Saturday I was long blond and wavy Sunday was long dark and straight. Now I'm dark straight in a bob. It's such easier being open about it than hiding it. I'm still really nervous about work and doing the school run but I'll face those… Continue

ARGH! Stupid commercials!

Is it just me or does anyone else wanna throw something at the t.v. whenever one of those shampoo commercials come on? I am starting to really dislike those women featured in them. Grrr...show offs.

Here we go, I can't run from this problem

I'm new to this, they haven't even diagnosed me yet but one thing is for sure, I had, up until 4 weeks ago beautiful, thick and curly hair. I've lost more then half all over and now I'm noticing thinning spots around my temples and the rest of my hair line. And what's scary is I'm watching it get thinner and thinner. It's fast man. My hair is everything to me, to me it makes me. After a slew of blood tests, and tons of questions my dermatologist is very curious about me and my symptoms. I've…

Steroid shots every two weeks for 12 year old?

Hi There

I am new to this and have a 12 year old and his hair is rapidly leaving before our eyes.  A friend of mine sends her 12 year old to Colombia Presbyterian in NYC and the treatment there is shots every two weeks.  I am on the west coast and doctors advise every 4 weeks.  Does anyone have info about this? Her dr. claims the frequent shots can help shut down the immune reaction and actually help stop the loss as it is occurring.  She is quite a respected dermatologist and I dont…

New me

For the last 30 years I've pretty much felt uncomfortable and an outcast because of losing all my hair since I was 8. I never had anyone to talk to who I could relate to and as a result was bullied a lot and lost all my self confidence. Lately I've begun to feel like I don't care as much anymore what people thing and I've decided to start having fun with it. I've bought 3 different wigs 2 brown 1 long 1 shoulder lent and a long blond one. I won't lie I'm nervous about wearing them because my… Continue

Paranoid of trusting my hair won't fall out again

I am 37 and have had alopecia since i was 16. For the most part, I have been lucky. Id only have a quarter size patch underneath u couldnt see...until 3 years ago when i had breast reduction surgery for which i was anesthetized. I know there is a connection to this, but not my main focus here. In the last several months i have been sticking to a strict vitamin regimen. I believe the MSM portion has helped me grow much of my hair back. I have been on the fence waiting for Xeljanz or…

We need a young female friend with alopecia for our daughter Allison,6

Hi all, We are looking for a friend with alopecia for our daughter who is six years old and going into first grade. We live in Plantation, FL and have only met a few people with alopecia. I want my daughter to have a friend she can share her strength and weaknesses with, a child that will understand and hopefully be friends with for life. We all know how difficult it is to have alopecia and in our daughters case, Universalis. I try to be everything for her but I know she needs someone her…

Newly Diagnosed

Hi All

Not sure if I am in the right place, I saw there was an area for parents.  My son is 12 and is losing large areas of hair now on the side of his head - it happened rather slowly, and we thought it was triciliomania, since he was pulling it. Now however it is coming out in clumps. I am trying not to alarm him, but it seems to only be speeding up. We see new dermatologist tomorrow and he is on a steroid creme, but I just want it to stop and it seems to be only getting worse.  I…

Im afraid that my husband wont find me attractive anymore...

So, the obsession begins again.

I look in the mirror as I brush my hair. I see the balding spots. I touch the top of my head. I feel my scalp and my fingers easily can feel it through the thin hair. I remember the time when I got my hair cut short to try to make it look thicker. My husband gave me a disappointed look when I returned home. Hes told me plenty of times how much he loves my hair and redhead in general. Don't get me wrong, he really is a great guy...but.....it saddens me…

Sally beauty made my daughter cry about herself

Last week my daughter Olivia and I were at Sally beauty supply.  As we were checking out the clerk said to my 6 year old  "You have pretty eyes , despite your condition"  I felt my daughter deflate in front of me.  I led Olivia out of the store and turned around and reamed the clerk  "How dare you say this to a child"  We both left the store in tears.

Last week I called the corporate office and posted on their fb page.  They offered us a $10 gift card. LOL  I said no. I had briefly…

Werk it like you mean it!

I'm getting my hair cut on the 20th.  I've decided to go with a super short pixie.  I've been wearing my hair pulled back this week to get a feel for it.  No hiding!   I just went to the Wegman's  and a woman smiled at me pointed to her head, and said " I like your hair." Yeah!  Right now, there are a ton of women without hairloss getting undercuts and shaving off parts of their hair.  When you "own" a look it becomes part of who you want to be.  This is who we are. …

Alopecia areata month 3

my alopecia started very suddenly and for the first time aged 50. Up until now I have been lucky to enjoy very thick and healthy hair. I just wanted to share what I have learnt so far and hope that it will offer another newbie a little comfort:

- it can be quite shocking the amount of hair that is lost. I paddle in the shower but still have hair left

- hair loss can be constant after 3 months

- it's surprising how many bald patches can be covered up and not show, hairspray and… Continue
