My A.A. Story/Journey(21/m)

Well anyways, I am new to the whole hair loss thing. I just got alopecia areata in March of this year. I never knew that you could suffer hair loss as a result of nature. I always just thought that major illness caused hair loss but I guess Mother Nature taught me something that I have never known before. It all started when I was getting my haircut (Get them usually every 1-2 months) in March. I remember all was good until my hair stylist told me something that would change my world and change… Continue

I thought I was alone in this - apparently I am not! : )

I have been dealing with Alopecia for ten years. In those ten years I have not met a single person who is struggling with this condition. Just recently I decided to reveal my Alopecia secret and I feel so relieved. I found this website through Facebook and was truly amazed. Thank you Alopecia World - it is obvious you are helping many.

That's the wrong door!

I was walking into a public restroom at McDonald's and a lady across the room shouts, "That's the wrong door!" I immediately look at the sign on the door with a lady's icon. It was so hard for me not to laugh. I turned around, with my pearl earrings, gave her a smile and walked into the restroom. Sometimes you just have to laugh.

School Pictures

After much discussion with my husband we decided to have Haley's picture taken without anything to cover her head. I was totally fine with this but was rather surprised that he suggested it. I guess that he is accepting it better as time goes by. I can't wait to see how the pictures turned out.

My nails too!?

Has anyone had any problems with their nails once diagnosed with AA? If so what and how did you manage it?

Anyone else experiencing technical problems on this website?

Is anyone else experiencing this problem: I go to read a blog or someone's comment on my profile and it kicks me back to the AW home page. Is it me or is this happening to anyone else?

Just wanted to share this with you all

A friend of mine, whom I lived with over the summer, recently left to move onto other things. She left me a card with some beautiful words in it that I thought some of you guys might like to hear.

"I've never had a friend who was bald before, and it takes some getting used to. What I didn't realize is how beautiful being bald is. It's like taking away all that extra stuff we don't need and leaving behind only what is truly ourselves. I cannot even grasp how hard it must be at times… Continue

Kenalog shots and blindness?!

Hey all! I was wondering if anyone has experienced any negative eye issues/blindness with receiving the Kenalog shots in the scalp? I have heard that some people have become blind for these shots in the scalp!! I got some more shots this Monday and my eyes feel like they are burning a little bit but otherwise they are ok. Please give me any feedback if you know someone that has experienced eye issues or not! If you have not had any eye issues with the shots, let me know as well!… Continue

Any suggestions about starting a support group?

I am thinking of starting an Alopecia support group in my area. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about starting one? What materials do I need for the first meeting? How long should the meetings be? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Pharmacy Drive-Thru

I pulled up to the pharmacy drive-thru and the clerk asked for my name. She came back and forth to the window getting various information. After all the formalities she said, "you know, there's not a lot of women who can pull that off."

People look at you once, then twice, and most likely a third time before going about their business. But I'm very thankful for the few that stop and take a moment to make me smile.

Hair after pregnancy! Was that my cure?

Hey everybody,

My daughter is now 3 months old. My hair started to regrow when I was about 24 weeks pregnant and now I have enough hair on my head to almost go without a wig. It'S still quiiet short, like a guys haircut but it'S growing really fast!

My body hair is growing, too and I had to shave my legs for the first time (in ages) a week ago. My eyebrows and eyelashes are there, too!!

I'm hoping so much that my hair is not going to fall out again after… Continue

Hey everyone!

Alopeciapalooza 2009 was held in Philadelphia and was attended by 52 families with 65 alopecians making our first convention a huge success! A little over 200 people building self-esteem, providing support and raising awareness in the City of Brotherly Love!

We have done a lot of work in finding the next host city of Alopeciapalooza and have norrowed it down to Baltimore and Chicago. Both are great cities with much to offer but only one can be the host city.… Continue

Bald! A Hairless Musical! <3

Hello all.... i must tell you all first that I am feeling much better, that bit of depression has past, and I am so thankful :)

Yesterday was a very special day for me and for all my friends with Alopecia!!! I went up to LA to meet Carl Carlyle, playwright, writer of "Bald: The Hairless Musical" He needed actors for his promotional video to show the investors, you know, the people who pay to put the play on, and I was lucky enough to be able to partake.... The score was so catchy!!! The… Continue

What I think about you!

I can't help it. I just love this amazing support community and the invaluable contributions that so many of you make to it. Not only do I appreciate each and every one of you, but I truly admire you as well. Your compassion, your courage, your resiliency, and your determination inspire me in more ways than I can count or chronicle. I will always be profoundly grateful, not only for what you've made Alopecia World, but even more so for what you're making of yourself. :-)

Hair regrowth! What should I do?

OKAY SO THIS IS KIND OF WEIRD FOR ME...VERY WEIRD FOR ME. ABOUT 2 TO 3 MONTHS AGO I NOTICED THAT I HAD SCATTERED PATCHES OF HAIR ON MY SCALP GROWING, AS WELL AS MY EYEBROWS AND EYELASHES WERE GROWING BACK. NOW I HAVEN'T HAD A STRAND OF HAIR ON MY HEAD FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 -3 YEARS. SO WHEN I FELT THE FINE PIECES OF HAIR ON MY HEAD I FELT WEIRD. I DONT WANT TO GET EXCITED BECAUSE THE DOCTORS HAVE ALL FORWARNED ME THAT IF I EXPERIENCED REGROWTH AND MY HAIR GREW COMPLETELY BACK ITS A VERY HIGH CHANCE… Continue

She sounded so postivie I'm thinking of trying it, but want to hear if anyone has any thoughts, comments, etc.

Thanks

Hopeless

So this is my first blog on here. I A friend suggested I blog to get out these feelings of helplessness. So here goes.

At the end of June this year, I discovered a small quarter sized bald spot on the back right side of my head. ( A coworker pointed it out.) I ran to my computer and took a picture of it since it's in the back and I can't see it. Naturally, I freaked out. I called a hair replacement specialist, who was kind enough to see me on a free consultation. He took one look and… Continue

Alopecia Areata magazine "Hoofdzaak" from the Netherlands

AW member Inez edits a beautiful magazine about alopecia areata, and she asked to use my blog post "Coming Out Bald at the Synagogue - What the Bible Says About Baldness", and some photos. I just received a copy of the magazine, and it's beautiful - full of articles and photos about alopecia and alopecians. I sure wish I read Dutch, though. We need a magazine like this in the US! There is also a photo of AW member Karina Louise in this issue. See photos on my page. Thanks, Inez - great work!
