Dating?

Ok, so no major deal - I've been single for the past year now, after an 11 year relationship. The truth is I hate being alone but I also don't get much of an opportunity to go out and meet people because I have the kids at home. It's hard enough to meet the right someone when you have alopecia let alone with a few kids at home and I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever get to meet someone special. It's not that I'm totally dependant on someone but I'm a snuggler and I really miss having someone… Continue

Getting hairy

So I'm looking at my head in the mirror and for the last few years I have ever so slowly been getting regrowth after years upon years (about 17) of having no hair at all whatsoever. I haven't done anything differently or taken any meds so this is completely occuring on its own. About 10 years ago I stopped wearing wigs most of the time and in the last year when I've seen the most growth is the time I've started becoming more involved in helping others with alopecia. Crazy… Continue

Been a while...

I guess the last blog I wrote was before I took my trip to Philly for the CAP conference which was over a month ago! I'm a bad blogger LOL

The conference was really cool and I got the opportunity to meet tons of really awesome people. It was rather unfortunate that my plane was cancelled the day I was supposed to leave because of the weather but I did get home the next day. I've also finished writing another alopecia story for another book, number two now :D (just waiting for it to… Continue

Still rollin'

I have my travel plans for Alopeciapalooza set up now and I'm so pumped for my workshop! I have some more work to do to set everything up and all but it's all good! I also got this email this morning from my website and the Toronto group is in the works of setting up CANAAF (Canadian Alopecia Areata Foundation) and they'd like me to sit in on one of their meetings. I'm hoping they'll let me be as much a part of this as I can be because this is what I've been hoping for for quite some time. I… Continue

What's up?

Well I just held another support meeting and it went well. It was a small turnout but that was okay because someone new to the group needed some in-depth attention and all the right people were there for him - coincidentally. I'm going to go ahead with plans for an afternoon in the park on National Bald Out day which I will add to the events (soon I hope). Other than National Bald Out day (Now International…

Time flies when you're busy!

OK don't be mad, I haven't been neglecting you all, I has just been busy folks! My hours at work are picking up so even though I'm part-time, it's more like full-time in the summer but let's face it - no one really wants to build a deck in the winter! On top of that I am making sure I have everything planned out for the CAP conference which I will be doing a workshop at. My current problem is writing a short bio - writing a short anything about me is difficult. There was a point in my life when… Continue

Alopecia Overload!

All of a sudden it just seems like I've got so much on the go with alopecia! My next support group meeting is in June and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again as we celebrate our one year anniversary!!

Thanks to Mary, I suppose?, I will be doing something for National Bald Out Day in my Canadian community but I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet. I'm thinking along the lines of a head shaving or people can sign their names on an alopecian's head with henna and that way we'll… Continue

Don't look down!!!

I sent out a few resumes yesterday and already today I got a call for an interview which I also had today. I have to say the interview went quite well, my resume apparently indicates that I'm an interesting person and I was in his top 25 out of hundreds which he chose. At the end of the interview he told me he was impressed and all in all I'm quite confidant that I will hear from him again.

I did wear my wig to the interview and was somewhat self conscious about it before and after… Continue

Alopecia grrrrs

Although I have bad hair days, my bad hair days consist of me wishing people were more accepting and tolerant rather than wishing my hair would grow back. As some of you may be aware of, I am looking for another job at the time and everyday that I go into my current job I hate it more and more. Everyday the balony grows and discrimination becomes more and more evident. I didn't get the sales job I was meant to have - everything I've done in my past, careerwise, has led me to that job. Their… Continue

A day of many firsts

I held another support group meeting on the first day of spring, March 20th. It was nice to see some old faces and even some new ones. Although we were a little tight on space, it didn't seem to matter too much as everyone seemed quite comfortable with each other. All of my youngest members came, one who's head looks just like mine and is the biggest sweetheart, one who's hair has actually come back in and refuses to let his mom cut it and our junior role model who's video we watched of her… Continue

Get a Life!

I've been going contest crazy lately! Looking for a new job in this economy with a bad wig is a tough job and can be rather depressing some days. I've been working part time still but only 15 to 20 hours a week which doesn't exactly give me much cash flow. I've got that Doritos commercial on the go but I don't think it will be winning any prizes anytime soon, unfortunately we no longer live in a world where creative ideas are enough, the technology has to match so this amateur ain't gonna cut… Continue

Weaning work into accepting alopecia

I've been working at the same place for over 7 months now. For those of you who don't know, I endured wearing a wig during the interview process and for the first probationary three months. After three months I ditched the wig and at my managers suggestion that the "customers" would feel more comfortable with seeing something on my head, I donned a scarf or bandana. Since I've worn the scarf I noticed that people seemed to be more concerned that I was ill. I've been asked if I had cancer and… Continue

Waiting game!

Have you ever felt like you were ahead of the game and were waiting for everyone around you to catch up??? I'm still waiting to hear if I got that sales position - they had to run it through all the monkeys running the show too! I'm organizing a camp for Canadians with alopecia this summer and before I can even think about getting registration forms written up, I'm waiting for the campground to send my information package. I've done just about everything I can do with everything and I'm waiting… Continue

Alopecia Book Review

I've never read any alopecia specific books before, that is until I got my copy of "Metamorphosis" by Julia Crittendon. Of course my portion of the book was excellent LOL But seriously, it was one of those things I could have writen a hundred times over and never been completely satisfied with. It was wonderful to hear about everyone's battle and recovery, if you will, over alopecia. It is a very inspiring and motivational book and I encourage anyone with alopecia to give it a… Continue

Hopes for 2009

OK - I haven't been on AW for a while now, mainly for two reasons. The first is mainly due to the fact that I can't seem to come here without having some perv think my bald head is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Although it's great that someone thinks I'm drop dead gorgeous, they don't seem to get the idea that one day my hair may come back and they will no longer find me attractive. Besides, since when was love all about being physically attracted to someone, there's gotta be more than… Continue

Egyptian Goddess??

Things have been quite interesting at work lately as far as my alopecia is concerned. Last week I finally spoke to the store manager about not wearing my wig to work anymore and she has no problems with this at all but we agreed I whould wear a scarf at least so that the public won't feel uncomfortable - I understand this and although it isn't completely fair, it is a customer service job and I can't let discomfort stand in the way of my own progress.

So, on Halloween I wore my bright red… Continue

Misfortune can become fortune

An old man and his son lived in an abandoned fortress on the side of a hill. Their only possession of value was a horse. One day the horse ran away. The neighbours came by to offer sympathy. "That's really bad!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old man.

The next day, the horse returned, bringing with it several wild horses. The old man and his son shut them all inside the gate. The neighbours hurried over. "That's really good!" they said. "How do you know?" asked the old… Continue

The Samurai and the Zen Master - A Japanese Story

A certain sumurai had a reputation for impatient and hot-tempered behaviour. A Zen Master, well known for his excellent cooking, decided that the warrior needed to be taught a lesson before he became any more dangerous. He invited the samurai to dinner.

The samurai arrived at the appointed time. The Zen master told him to make himself comfortable while he finished preparing the food. A long time passed. The samurai waited impatiently. After a while he called out: "Zen Master - have… Continue

Alopecia is wonderful sometimes!

I was sitting in the lunchroom at work when this cute guy I've been secretly looking at for a little while sat next to me. After finding out that he was a genetics student at the university here I thought I would clarify something for myself (and others as it related to a recent question asked on AW). It actually sparked quite the conversation and we talked about alopecia for a little while before he shyly admitted to having psoriasis (although you'd never know).

Now normally I was… Continue
