The BeBold Alopecia Camp 2010

On Friday 30th July 2010 Cowboys and Indians from across the UK decided it was time to meet together at the first ever Childrens’ Alopecia Camp. Some travelling day and night to get there, everybody was pleased to return home to our roots in Scarborough’s Wild West, Pinewood Holiday Park.

The view was wonderful and it was amazing to see how life has changed with a lovely camp site now filled with Cowboy Shacks and Indian Tipis… Continue

8 year old daughter has alopecia & allergies - please help!

My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata a year ago and had a single bald spot. This past April she had another bald spot appear and we used the topical steroid to help it grow back. Recently after a vacation we came home and all of her hair started coming out - obviously we were horrified. We were told there is nothing that can be done but the more i reserach the more i see things in common with other children her age. She has allergies and asthma. We've given her 24 hour… Continue

Just To Talk

Ok this is the first time I've ever done this. So sorry for any misspellings and bad grammar. Sssssssoooooooooo sorry if its bad or something like that. OK well I just wanted to talk....what about? I got no idea. But I guess just talking about something is the best thing. So here I go.

Since I was about 18 months old (I am now 20 years old) I have been slowly over the years losing my hair. I have what is known as alopecia. Its not life threatening or anything like that I just have an… Continue

Regrowing?

Spring has brought some seeds back into my head too I guess, suddenly some blonde feathery hairs have sprouted out of my head!

Not everywhere on my head, not on the sides but it's better than nothing, right?

But not only are they making a comeback on top of my head, my sideburns might be coming back too! Now I can maybe finally grow my beard and walk around with a beard and (maybe) bald head, that's cool ;D hehe

And it doesn't stop there, no no.. I feel some stubbles on my… Continue

Stable times

Well, it's been a while since I posted my last blog. I've been busy with school and not so busy with my hair... or without my hair, haha.

I'm still bald and my legs are still becoming smoother, as well as my arms.

In general, I don't really care for my almost hairless arms and legs. What I do care about are my eyebrows. Those I don't want to lose, and I'm taking measures to prevent to let them.

I still use the fluid 'DPCP' on my eyebrows, and it works! Sometimes they fall… Continue

INTERNATIONAL ALOPECIA DAY - spread the word in other languages!

As many of you know, the name of our annual awareness and pride event was changed in May by vote of the National Bald Out Group. The event is now called "International Alopecia Day".

Because of the name change, I removed the second NBO video that I had made, and it's no longer on YouTube. So, the text is no longer available there. But, in case anyone else wants to translate the message into…

Fingernails are frustrating me :-/

I used to journal/blog all the time a few years ago. I always found it therapeutic, so hopefully this will be the first of many on here :-)

For the last 15 years I've reluctantly gotten used to having no hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, etc. However, in the last year my fingernails decided to join the party. They used to get white spots on them every so often, but last year the nails started separating. Now I have sections of my nails that are gone and wont grow back. Whenever something… Continue

Alopecia got me good this time

About a year ago I'd say, I decided to finally do what I've always wanted to do. I was getting myself in shape, running for miles, eating healthy, taking the right college courses. On the ball, no I was THE BALL. So, me and my friend we're going to do it, we had waited till the next class came around to take it together.

It's a big commitment and I was ready. Oh hell yea I was ready, I couldn't wait for the discipline to come down and smack me hard across the face and get me in to top… Continue

Telling people

Well, since I got my wig I've become more open with AA, I accept it more and I don't really care what people think of it, everyone I've told it reacted well to it.

Now that I know that I thought it was time to tell my class about it. So last Thursday we had gymnastics. I told the teacher (who's also my mentor guy, do he already knew about everything) and he put the class together on the bench.

He told them that we thought we could trust them and hoped that they wouldn't react in a… Continue

Becoming worse

I am a boy, 17 years of age and I also have Alopecia Areata, as many of you on this website.

I have had it since I was 12/13 years old. In the beginning I only had one or two little bald spots on the back of my head. I had no idea what it was, until my hairdresser told me what it was, even the doctor didn't know what it was which is strange. Then the hairdressers gave me 'Nioxin' which helped and the bald spots dissapeared.

Then when I was just 15 it came back on both sides of… Continue

A Perfect Sunday!!!!!

Sunday was an ideal day, the weather forecast was good and so we got up early and set off for the beach in Wales. We go to a beach between Barmouth and the Clynn Peninsular so it’s about a two and a half hour drive away from Warrington. We break the journey up with a coffee stop at Bala which is always a good place to break the journey. We always use the same coffee shop as the coffee is excellent and the coffee shop itself is an interesting place to visit. It is an old chapel converted into a… Continue

A wonderful book!

I worked in my local school district for seven years. A 5th grade Teacher having read this book for many years along with her students, discovered I had Alopecia. She asked me if I would be interested in having a discussion with her class, and without hesitation I blurted out , "Yes, sure I will." This was my prior to Alopecia outgoing personality coming out. Later, I thought I can't even come to terms with having Alopecia myself, lil alone discussing… Continue

oh it's so wrong..

I know the sweetest nine year old girl on this planet (in my opinion)

One of the most unspoiled children I've ever seen in my life.

she's absolutely beautiful, but she has to wear wigs because of Alopecia Areata, Her mom was telling me about how she came home crying from school one day because the children took off her wig on the bus and were running around hiding it from her.

She actually had to go back up to he school, to get the wig back from lost and… Continue

Two weeks or more in!!!!!!!

I have been fully AU now for just over a couple of weeks and I’ve become used to the new me. It really is great now that I’ve gone through that awful period when the hair is falling out.

I’ve had lots of support and kind comments from people on the alopecia websites I use and also from family and friends who know what has been going on. It has had its’ moments of humour though!!!!

Only last week as I was getting changed at the gym/sports hall I bumped into a friend who… Continue

What to do????

My second bout of alopecia is developing in quite an interesting way. I have shaved my head as I did with my first experience of alopecia but this time my eyebrows are thinning and I now have patches on my body. The first time I had alopecia the painful stage of seeing hairs in the shower stopped as soon as I shaved my head. This time I have shaved my head but there are still hairs in the shower that clearly are coming out of my body. My body hair, beard and one set of eyelashes have changed… Continue

Round Two - One Month In

Well it is now just over a month ago that I shaved my head for my second bout of Alopecia. How time flies!!!!!!

What I have noticed this time around is that my patches are much less visible as it seems that my hair falling out was much more a case of thinning rather than just large patches. There are a couple of large patches but in the main the bulk of the hair that fell out was very definitely a thinning of my hair whereas the first time I shaved my head there was a lot of big… Continue

Guess what Santa is bringing me for Christmas??????

As Christmas approaches it looks as thought Santa is bringing me another bout of Alopecia.

Having shaved all of my hair off last December to reveal a glorious map of the world on my head (40% of my hair had fallen out) I was a happy bald person. By August the patches had all disappeared and so I let me hair grow back. I still kept it short but I did have hair. A couple of weeks ago though I noticed a patch on the left side of my head just above the ear had developed and it’s getting… Continue
