Nice scarf-tying tips on a website

I saw a newspaper article about this organization for cancer patients called Look Good...Feel Better. (I think that's a good motto for us, too!)

They have some very nice explanations about tying scarves on this page. Just click on the various "scarf" topics:

Another illustration of why bald works for me

I performed in San Diego and Laguna Beach, California last weekend with a wonderful Bulgarian band now touring the country - "Bulgarika". Drumming is hard work, and at times I got hot - sweat running off my scalp hot - and took off my scarf. Then I'd get cooled down at times and put it back on.

From my perspective, if I had a wig on, I would just feel SO weird if I took it off and on. One moment I'd have hair, then next not! This happened to me a lot when I was trying to wear wigs… Continue

Cool costumes only alopecians can do for Halloween!

Hey everybody - If you have a bald head, think about the costume possibilities! Let's get out there this Halloween and win some costume contests (or, at least, scare the heck out of our neighbors' kids at the door).

I just bought some HORNS - they're not very big, about an inch and a half tall, but they look absolutely amazing sticking up out of the top of my smooth scalp. People with hair have to put them on their foreheads, but mine are going right on the top, a little to the… Continue

What to do with your hair dryer (besides throw it away)!

I just saw this news item about unusual uses for blow dryers. Mine has been in a bag in the closet (along with my curling iron) since I lost my hair almost 4 years ago.

Just added some music from my band

Some of you have read my descriptions of going to a Balkan music and dance camp, or seen photos on my page of me drumming with bands. If you'd like to hear what the music is like, I just put up 4 tracks from one of the two bands I play with, "Dromia", on my profile page. This is all traditional dance music, some of it in uneven rhythms.

The first (Kalamatiano) is from Greece. I'm playing doumbek (goblet-shaped hand drum). This is in 7/8.

The second (Coceks) is from… Continue

International Alopecia Day is Saturday, August 6, 2011!

For those of you who don't know about it, International Alopecia Day is an annual event that got started right here on Alopecia World a couple of years ago.

It's a day to celebrate who we are, be proud, raise awareness among non-Alopecians, and connect with other people with hair loss. Here's the Group page where you can join:…

Finally back home - missed Alopecia World!

I wanted to post a short blog just to let you know that I didn't fall off the face of the earth, or abandon AW. I was travelling for 7 weeks in the UK (I posted a blog from there about meeting a bald woman at the airport in London), and then right after I got home, I took off for a week at my annual Balkan music and dance camp. So, I've had very infrequent Internet access for the past two months. I arrived home yesterday and am slowly catching up on everything.

This was my second…

Meeting another bald woman in public

I recently had a wonderful experience. I was standing in a long line at customs at London's Heathrow Airport after a long flight from the US. We ended up in the midst of a plane load of people from Israel - I recognized the lilting Hebrew words. Ahead of me I saw a bald woman, about my age. As the line twisted back and forth around the rope barrier, she and I came face to face - I said hello. She didn't speak much English, and I know only a little Hebrew. I motioned toward her face and head…

You'll Never Walk Alone - With AlopeciaWorld.com!

Feeling down? I thought I'd post something to help.

First watch this beautiful version of the song from the musical, Carousel, performed on the Tony Awards:

When you walk through the storm

Keep your chin up high

And don't be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm

Is a golden sky

And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk…

Bald women rock! Please VOTE in online poll!

In addition to vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Shelby Johnson, and our own Alopecia World member, Lili (aka Eulalia), on the new TV show "The Voice", Christina Aguilera has TWO women on her team who have smoothly shaved heads.

Here are links showing photos of two of the first three singers chosen by Aguilera on last night's premiere:

Is there a bald woman on the new show, The Voice?

I happened to see a commercial for the new singing competition show, The Voice. I watched it several times on my DVR because part of the way through it, they show what appears to be a bald or shaven-headed woman contestant. On the official website for the show, they have a trailer and at 0:24 in the trailer, there's a quick shot of the woman. The show premiers April 26 on NBC. The "twist" is apparently that the judges/mentors don't see the contestants before judging their vocal talent.

I wouldn't ask the genie for my hair back!

I've been struggling with a problem I've had for almost 6 years - severe jaw pain due to an injury to my TMJ in 2005. Every few months it acts up, usually brought on by too much talking. I love to talk, and I teach dance and drumming classes.

I reaggravated the problem at the beginning of February. It feels like someone is constantly sticking an ice pick into my cheekbone/jaw area, and it goes on for months at a time. Even quiet talking is too painful. Multiple doctors and many… Continue

"I'm a survivor" too!

I had a new "cancer" comment today while at a drug store. The checker was an older guy, and as he finished ringing up my stuff he smiled warmly and said "I'm a survivor". As usual, I had forgotten about being bald, and was taken aback. So, I responded with my usual "Oh, I don't have cancer...I have Alopecia Areata....But, I'm glad you're a survivor."'

As I left the store, it hit me - I'M A SURVIVOR, TOO! The next time someone tells me they're a survivor, I'm going to… Continue

Dee Dee Bridgewater - Grammy winning and bald!

I just saw an article in my local San Diego newspaper about a jazz singer, and recent Grammy winner, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the accompanying photo shows a beautiful bald woman! (And, wonderfully, the article didn't say a word about her being bald!) I immediately looked her up online and found this one of many YouTubes:

Bald mice get hair - but new discovery may not apply to AA

My first bald driver's license!

My driver's license is up for renewal, and I've been waiting until I could get a new photo that looks the way I've looked for 3 years - bald! Every time I had to show the old photo ID to someone, it depressed me to see myself with all the hair and my original eyebrows. And, people would look at the photo and just assume all the more that I have cancer.

So, this week I made an appointment and went in to have a new photo taken. They unexpectedly made me take the written test again, but… Continue

Who is this bald woman singing and dancing with Prince at Madison Square Garden?

Beginning at about 1:30 in this video (after Prince kicks Kim Kardashian off stage), there appears to be a bald woman in a costume singing and dancing with him. Does anyone know who the heck she is, if this is indeed a woman?

Why I'll never again be upset when people assume I have cancer: Experiences as a bald woman in Indonesia

This is a bit long, but please read and share it if you have ever felt upset at being mistaken for a cancer patient, and/or if you are travelling to other parts of the world as a bald woman.

I've just returned from 5 and a half weeks in the beautiful country of Indonesia with my husband. The purpose of our trip was scuba diving - Indonesia has some of the finest diving in the world - and we'd never been there. In 23 days of diving at several locations, I did 71 dives. The underwater… Continue
