Alopecia universalis diagnosed at age 2 yrs old

My daughter is 3yrs old now but lost all hair at age 2yrs old, no eyebrowns, eyelashes. Im just interested in others diagnosed so young. The doctors at St Louis Childrens Hospital said she will most likely never grow hair at all because she was so young and so severe. Im just curious what you all have seen, had happen. Thanks! Im new at this so not sure if Im doing this correct, Lori Ann

"Something strange in alopecia world"

Cam e across this interesting article: http://globalalopeciamission.org/something-strange-in-alopecia-world/

I'd like you guys to read and share your thoughts..

Is the "alopecic community" becoming far too inward looking and ultimately resigned to its fate?

Is there a sort of "cottage industry" catering to us that secretly doesnt want us to do anything about it?

I mean, why the… Continue

Confused

I had AU few years back. Occasionally, it falls and grows back. Sometimes, i went for the steroids shots, sometimes I don't. The shots are horrible and gave terrible side effects such as pimples, irregular periods and putting on weight. Recently, I found my hair dropping excessively again. I am confused if i should take the shots again or just leave it. If I were to do nothing, will my hair grows back again like it did before? Have any of you been experiencing the same thing?

AA's link with Celiac disease

Just came across this article which says that according to latest research, there might be a link between autoimmunity disorders and Celiac disease which is basically an intolerance of wheat and similar food.

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/latestresearch/a/celiac.htm

I even read a comment on some post from a former AA patient that she tested herself for Celiac and was found positive. She gave up on wheat… Continue

My experience with steroid shots

I have several bald patches on the back of my head from last 3 months, most are small and not visible, but one is pretty big (almost 2 X 1 inch) and is slightly visible if my hair is not properly arranged, also a small patch on my beard.

I started taking steroid shots about 2.5 months back, have taken my 4th shot this weekend. There is regrowth of tiny hair in my small patches, but none yet in the bigger one. Also, on my beard, I'm having white hair growing. I'm also getting pimples… Continue

Tired and sore

so far i have a 4inch by 4inch bald patch on the left of my head and a coin sized one on the right but for the last few days iv been really tender on the top of my head.....like iv been bashed hard on the head and i had this before my hair fell out on the sides so it looks like i might not get away with wearing my thick hairband much longer and have to just shave it.i think shaving might help me feel more in control somehow.

the only thing i don't get about alopecia is every time before… Continue

And life moves on

This is not another blog about how much life sucks because of alopecia. This is a praise report!!! Although just recently I was diagnosed with and have lost complete body hair I couldn't be happier. Not because I have this funky disease but because I refuse to let it put me in a place of darkness. I have been blessed with a great paying and fulfilling job, I have a loving family who supports me and we are about to purchase our first house. God is so good and greatly to be praised! Where one… Continue

New wig! :)

Got my new wig today and excited about wearing it. I know that co workers will be like ...OK, but heck with it LOL ! There is also a guy in the office I had a romantic interest in, but if he can't deal with it and this makes me lose a chance with him oh well ! Sometimes in life we have to make the most of a situation we can. When I was in my 20's and had hair I often had a difficult time styling it and caring for it. Now that I wear wigs I don't have to worry as much about that and I can easily… Continue

Just started a round of shots in my scalp. Anyone know what to expect? We started with a small patch to see how I respond then will do full treatment if I improve. Wish me luck =)

Freckles make you smarter!

Freckles....I have lots of them! As a kid I remember the single band of freckles stretching across my nose to my cheeks. I never thought much about my freckles, in fact, I kind of liked them...they were ME!

Once I hit my teens my freckles continued to repopulate...if there was a blank canvas, a freckle was sure to appear. I thought my freckles were cool and made me different, unique, interesting.

That is until the day I read an article in one of those high fashion… Continue

A little bit of info I found

I just found out today that the National Alopecia Areta Foundation set up an Ascot Fund that provides financial assistance toward the purchase of a hairpiece to individuals who have alopecia areata and are struggling financially. I was also on this other website that seemed to have a lot of wigs and hairpieces that were very natural looking...there were some on there even for kids that I really wished was around when I was a kid.… Continue

Excited

First of all I am a black woman, which makes wig buying a little less uncomfortable than my sisters of other descent, and I found a really cool wig that can be curled and comes pre bumped. I got a short length because my sister suggested it but decided to order a longer length because that is what I am more comfortable with. It is the Sensationnel Bump Human hair wig. My hair (or lack of it LOL) does bother me sometimes and I really hate wearing a wig but at least with a wig I can style I feel… Continue

Curious about discoloration

On my scalp there are discolored areas that are much lighter than my natural skin tone. What is that about?

What a day!

Around the age of 8, I was diagnosed with alopecia universalis. About 5 years later, it came back in and ever since I've been with hair...until about 2 months ago. I'm now 31 and the hair is completely gone. I will admit I had to get re-adjusted to not having hair again, but at least I knew what to expect. My mother is my confidant through this and I don't feel comfortable with telling anyone else. But I come on here and spill my guts? Yes! I feel this is the only place where people understand… Continue

Family Jewels

As I was watching Family Jewels tonight, with Gene and Shannon going thru marriage boot camp. The counselor asked Gene does he love himself enough to forgive his father. This brought back thoughts when I was so angry at my own father that the thought of him would actually cause me to feel rage, that I could actually cause physical harm to him. I saw red.

The counselor made a significant point....If you want to live a balanced life, free of bitterness you have to learn to forgive. You… Continue

Smile. It looks good on you

Beyond all the painful things in life there's something that makes you smile. Well for me there is. My family. My friends make me smile and happy too but they're are all the way back in NYC & sometimes you just need people that's here, that's actually face to face. Even though, me and my family have our ups and downs we love each other. I love spending time with them because they make me forget about all the bad stuff in life. They make me feel okay. I don't worry around them because I know… Continue
