Hi . . . my name is Kari and I'm new to alopeciaworld but NOT new to alopecia . . . it's been 15 years since I lost my hair, back before there was really anything out there online to help out.

I am currently working on a national alopecia awareness project, and need a young woman with alopecia in the Philadelphia area for about 4 hours of work . . . it's for a music video to go with a single my friend wrote about a young woman with alopecia.

We have to get this piece of… Continue

Enjoy yourself and have fun

what i have learnt is that what ever anyone says or dose to me,u and or anyone is that we all can choose to let it effect us or we all can choose to not let it effect us.we all can just have fun be normal in ower owen ways not what anyone elce thinks is normal its ower appinion that counts not theres.

so yeah that is now my way of dealing with what other people think of me :)

so just remember what ever is wrong just have fun and enjoy your self :)

My lil Urban Garden

Today I thought I'd share about my new friends, some beautiful plants that I acquired over the weekend. Since I've stopped obsessing about my hair loss, I've been able to move onto and focus on more positive activities. Most of my friends know that I find plants creepy and yet, I have a desire to keep a few, select ones, carefully chosen for my climate, apartment, oh, and how I feel about them :) They make me happy and it keeps me calm when I look at them. I don't hate plants, I just feel… Continue

Wigs and Toppers

Living with Alopecia for over 15 years now I can read my patterns to some degree. I know my hairloss this time is going to be extremely bad, probably the worst its ever been. But, I don't know if I'm going to lose all my hair. I've read that areata can lead to totalis or universalis, so there is always that fear in my head. Is this it? Will it all fall out this time? Currently, nobody can tell that I have bald spots yet.

Since my hairloss is progressing at a really fast rate and the spots… Continue

Happy Easter

Hey guys, long time no see. I hope everyone's had a good day. I just had an Easter egg hunt. As for my progress with Alopecia, I've been off the hormone meds and hair is still growing back thick and long. Inside I still feel insecure now and then, and paranoid that I'll lose it all over again. I guess the first battle's the toughest. But keep on being strong everyone. You may have Alopecia, but Alopecia doesn't have you. Be strong, because you're all beautiful!

Help request for 16 year old girl

It's been a while since I reached out for advice here but recent events have brought me back. My daughter will be 16 next month & is struggling with her alopecia. She is depressed, feels alone & is close to being hospitalized for treatment. She has been in therapy for at least two years, but has not come to the point where she can accept her condition & eventually take control of her life again. I have tried to get her to visit this site & the amazing peoiple who have determined… Continue

I finally did it - I shaved my head!

Last night I caught sight of myself in the mirror with my real hair pulled back in a pony tail with my many bald spots showing through. And I thought, that's it - it's time, I look hideous. I discussed it with my hubby who played devil's advocate and stressed to me that there was no turning back once I did it so to make sure I was sure. As he put it, I can still throw on a hat and go to the store (with my real hair) or around the house.....but you can't hide bald!

So we started off… Continue

Wigs and lashes

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if someone could give me some information on false lashes. My eyelashes are starting to fall out and i wanted to know which false lashes are the best. Ideally I am looking for some that are able to stay on for a few days at a time, maybe longer. I'm not even sure if these exist? I am also wondering what wigs would be best if I wanted to wear my hair in a ponytail or something. I have monofilament wigs that I love but I can only wear them in a low… Continue

DCP treatment and me

Just want to share with you and those considering it, I found the information about the treatment is somehow limited to its action. So I want to share with you about the journey I have during the last 8 months...well, I'm still on it.

I found this treatment last year, and the concept or the theory behind is quite understandable. Before I heard of the treatment, I usually find some tiny hairs grow around inflammed area. That the concept of DCP is actually induce a continuous inflammatory… Continue

Itch, itch, scratch, scratch, scratch...arrgghhh

I'm 'shedding' again, or so it seems as my eyebrows, lashes, and the hair on my chest are slowly disappearing. One forearm is also joining in...well, part of one anyway. The arm looks bizarre not that having a partial an eyebrow is normal. The worst part is the itching which always seems to accompany the fall out...followed by the scratching, then even more itching and feined attempts to not scratch. Now I know how it feels to be a dog with fleas.

I suppose that I was in denial up… Continue

Diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP) treatments for my son

Ethan (my son) is scheduled to begin a treatment with diphenylcyclopropenone (DCP). I've have been reading up on this sort of treatment and noticed the horrible side effects. My son already suffers from exzema and so afraid this will really effect him.. Can anyone please share your DCP treatment experience with us. I'm not sure if I want to put Ethan through this. I'm so new to all this. Seems like we just woke up one day and his hair was all gone from one day to the next.

3 steps back

Scene: Dining-in at a fast food restaurant. 8 year old or so boy bounces past my table. He takes 3 steps backward and stops. Deep stare. I smile. He bounces on with balloon in hand.

Hopefully he'll become a little more discreet in the future or at least stop long enough for me to explain that yes, I am a bald girl.

Big grin.

My First Bald Blog

I definitely can feel a turning point in this entire process. I have been so aware of myself going through each of the 7 stages of grief.

Stage 1 - Denial

Losing my hair has been a process. Last year, I was at a sales conference in Chicago and I felt a smooth spot on the back of my head. When I got home from my business trip, I asked my boyfriend to check it out and he said it looked like someone had taken a lock of my hair. This was the first of many times that I used the two… Continue
