When I was in 8th grade (either 14 or 15) I started loosing my hair. Doctor first gave me some cream to rub on it, didn't help. Went to the dermotologist, he gave me some stronger cream, still didnt help so they did a biopsy and found out that I have Alopecia Areata... I took it rather well for a teenager, my mom took it worse than I did. She cried over it countless times cause I had long, thick, brown hair. But me, I never once cried over it. I never did anything with my hair anyways, it was…

I apologize I haven't blogged in a while, with finals and my road trip back to South Dakota, it's been quite hectic. I will update soon though, just thought I'd say hello & I hope everyone is doing well!
We shaved my head yesterday. Considered shaving it bare but decided to keep some for now and see how that goes. I'm feeling good about my choice thus far, haven't had any melt downs as of yet. It was crazy to see how much hair I had, as well as how much was actually missing from…

Recently, I took up running. I'm just starting out, but it's one of the only things that helps releive my stress and make this whole alopecia thing seem more manageable. While running, I wear bandanas, but am totally bummed by the lack of selection at stores near me. They are all cheaply-made, obviously designed for men, or too dark (which when you add sun translates to too hot). Today my friend came over to give me a birthday gift- a totebag filled with dozens of cute, light-colored, girly…

At one point, you seem to be on a roll. In my life I have felt this way many times...things just seem to go how you planned it or surprisingly, it all just works out. Well, that's how I felt up until I received the results of my biopsy. Scarring alopecia... "What!" Well some might tell me that I'm in denial, but I do pray and believe that my hair will grow back. On the flip side, if it doesn't I'm prepared to live happily as I have been doing. Not what I would want, but hey, we don't and can't…

My daughter Vanessa has had some form at AA (AT or AU) since the age of two. About 8 years ago she lost all of her hair with only eyebrows and eyelashes growing back about 2 years ago. She has hair growing back on her scalp for the first time in 8 years. It looks like about 75% of ther scalp has dark fine hair growing that is getting thicker and longer as it grows. I am more afraid then excited. This has been a devastating condition for her. She has never found any type of comfort level with…

This past weekend I was at this event, and I wore my wig. I bought my wig back in March so I've been wearing it for a little while now, and alot of people have seen my new "look." Well, at this event, a ton of people I haven't seen in a while (before my wig) were there. Many people I know have been saying over the past couple months how they like my new hair cut and when did I decide to cut it all off, and so on and so on. (I hate these questions – but my hair is so different now from what it…

Hey everybody,
I'm watching True Life 'I'm losing my hair' at the moment, and I've been thinking about it some time now, and I have a question.
How many people know you have alopecia and/or have a wig?
I'm seventeen years old now and I have a wig, quite some friends know that I have a wig and have alopecia. I haven't gone to school, or the town where most of my friends live and a lot of people who know me live, bald. And I don't really know if I should tell people…

Hey guys,
It's been a while since I've been on here but I have a few questions and was hoping to get some advice.
I am currently wearing monofilament wigs and am going to Seville in Spain for 4 weeks with work and it is due to be very hot. I was wondering if anyone has been to a hot climate and found wearing their wig to be uncomfortable? I have been wearing wigs since January this year and have experienced no discomfort so far and hoping things will stay like…

Washing what I have left of my natural hair I noticed a toony size bald spot right by my temple area.I stared at it for a few seconds, then continued styling what I had over it and noticed I wasn't covering it well, took yet another look, stared at it, and said out loud," that's it, its time to go". These patches keep apearing and i'm getting sick of trying to hide it. SHAVE SHAVE SHAVE here I come!! I feel good at the moment that its all coming off tonight but i'm not sure how I will feel once…

It has been about 9 months since I found my first spot.
It took about a month for my hair to stop falling out and since that time those areas are growing back. :)
I was lucky because the spots my hair fell out were all on the back of my head, underneath the rest of my thick hair. No one could see but me, my hair. I Love God! I have trusted that he would heal me and that this was over, and as far as I could tell it was!
until...
Yesterday I find another spot, about the size…

I guess I am not the most patient person in the world, I feel like I do whatever it takes to better myself and always seem to be dissappointed. I recently interviewed for a position and of course I was excited and told a few people at work. Well one lady at work with a good career decided to apply for it as well. She drilled me about the job and would not have any idea if I didn't tell her since the posting was not in her area. So now I am bummed about this because is had a potential career…

Well here is my story I hope it helps someone realize that Alopecia should not become a crutch or a burden. We all should also realize it affects the ones we love or love us much more than it does us.
I began to lose my hair at the age of 2 at that time I was growing up in Mexico and my mother just emigrated to the USA. I lived with my grandparents who really were supportive and loved me very much. At the age of 6 my mother sent for me and I had a rough time dealing with the move. I…

I told my mom I wanted to shave my hair off. I thought she was going to have a heart attack. Nobody else at the table expressed their opinion so I took it as a 'NO'. I then called my older sister, also my beautician to tell her about my decision. She said it was up to me but because my hair wasn't falling out and I still have a good amount of hair left, about 3/4 of my head. It would be better if she could braid my hair because of maintaince purposes. I agreed with her because she is the one…

Alopecia may be the most visible thing about your body that differs from others from the neck up, but if that VISION is what bothers you, you can change the vision to something you will accept for yourself, even if it is not "original" or "perfect."
Instead of concentrating on only ONE aspect, however (sight), you can assess your other senses as well (sound, smell, taste, touch), plus aspects of heart, mind, humor, empathy, creativity, musical or artistic talent, movement, verbal…

I thought I was moving ahead by wearing the scaves the past couple of weeks, but then when I went out today I felt totally different. I went to brunch with my husband today and realized I was the only woman in the restaurant without hair. I felt so cheated and unhappy. This is a set back and I don't know how to get past it. I want to cry but I know that's not going to help. Why did this thing happen to us?
