When you're being shouted "HEY! BALDY!"

It is a normal thing now for me to deal with certain insensitive comments by members of the public occasionally (once in two weeks or in a month) and thankfully I dont easily get depressed or hurt over them as often as I used to compared to a couple of years ago.

I was reading a post in Alopecia World about coping with alopecia and dealing with all the insensitive (OR stupid) statments being made and I am reminded of an ordeal that happened to me a couple of days ago when I was… Continue

Down in the Dumps, Feeling Alone.

Is this feeling of loss and sadness ever going to go away?

90% of the time I feel completely accepting and fine with having female pattern baldness. In fact, I was beginning to feel pretty damn good about myself and the situation, regardless of the fact that I'll be chopping my hair off shortly and am still losing clumps every night. But then today one of my friends sent me a picture of me three years ago - back when I had my full head of hair and was in all my glory - and an immense… Continue

Hair Transplant

As some of you may know, I got a hair transplant 2 months ago. I am curious about those who have Alopecia. I came here for support on my hair loss and know you all support male pattern baldness. I know that hair transplants don't work for you all but if it did, would you consider getting one?

Thanks,

Julian White

The British summer!!!!!!

What is so wonderful about British weather is that it changes so much and so often. Only a few weeks ago we were all basking in a glorious hot summer spell. The sun was warming my bald head whenever I went outside and it was wonderful. Today as I walk along my head is drenched and the rain is running off my head and down into my unprotected eyes. On an appearance basis my lack of eyebrows is not a problem as I quite like the total hairless image but they did serve a purpose in that they did… Continue

My First Anniversary with Alopecia & My First Blog...Fast Forward Second Anniversary

Hello Friends,

It has been a wonderful year indeed. Unexpected and unpredictable.

It was an unusually warm and clear summer night in San Francisco. A night full of laughter and celebration with friends. It was July 4th 2007.

After the smoke and embers cleared I awoke and went off to work. But there was a suprise waiting for me. Something different. A small circle on my head appeared before me. I thought what is this? Had an ember of my Independence fallen upon… Continue

When To Tell A Man...

Hi y'all!

So here's my decision: I'm shaving my remaining hair off at the end of the summer and ordering a vacuum wig. And I'm actually really excited! YAY!

Here's the thing. When should I tell a guy that I'm wearing a wig and my head is shaved? Do I do it before we get into a relationship? On the first date? When I sense things are going somewhere between us? I'm currently flirting and kinda dating this one guy who I met relatively recently. He doesn't know about my hair… Continue

What's up?

Well I just held another support meeting and it went well. It was a small turnout but that was okay because someone new to the group needed some in-depth attention and all the right people were there for him - coincidentally. I'm going to go ahead with plans for an afternoon in the park on National Bald Out day which I will add to the events (soon I hope). Other than National Bald Out day (Now International…

Alopecia at Work.

Hey guys, just a brief question. What have been your experiences as an alopecian at work? Has it prevented you from getting a job? Have things become weird at work because of your alopecia? Any advice or tips on what wigs look (and feel) comfortable and natural?
I'm new to the work force and am curious what I might be facing!
Thanks!
Alexandra

P.S. - If it makes any difference, my field will be marketing related.

In Need of a Confidence Boost (and Advice!)

Hey guys!

Today is one of those tough days when my confidence and acceptance of my hair loss is slipping. I'm not burst-into-tears-so-unhappy miserable or anything, but I'm more like "eh." I'm thinking my head shave will be taking place sooner rather than later. When I comb my hair after my shower I keep losing clumps. There are only so many months I can keep losing clumps before my hair is too thin to be pretty! So I'm a little shaken by that. I'm thinking it'll be an experience that's… Continue

British weather is a bit like alopecia!!!!!

Yesterday the weather was fantastic. It was warm and sunny and it was a real pleasure to take a walk outside. The sun on my bald head was wonderful as was the warm spring breeze. Today it is dull and cold again. The simple facts are that it is just the ever changing British weather.

In many ways the weather here is rather like alopecia. Sometime you have hair sometime you don’t, sometimes it’s warm and sometimes it’s cold. Just as you think that things are going in one direction then… Continue

Don't look down!!!

I sent out a few resumes yesterday and already today I got a call for an interview which I also had today. I have to say the interview went quite well, my resume apparently indicates that I'm an interesting person and I was in his top 25 out of hundreds which he chose. At the end of the interview he told me he was impressed and all in all I'm quite confidant that I will hear from him again.

I did wear my wig to the interview and was somewhat self conscious about it before and after… Continue

Alopecia grrrrs

Although I have bad hair days, my bad hair days consist of me wishing people were more accepting and tolerant rather than wishing my hair would grow back. As some of you may be aware of, I am looking for another job at the time and everyday that I go into my current job I hate it more and more. Everyday the balony grows and discrimination becomes more and more evident. I didn't get the sales job I was meant to have - everything I've done in my past, careerwise, has led me to that job. Their… Continue

A day of many firsts

I held another support group meeting on the first day of spring, March 20th. It was nice to see some old faces and even some new ones. Although we were a little tight on space, it didn't seem to matter too much as everyone seemed quite comfortable with each other. All of my youngest members came, one who's head looks just like mine and is the biggest sweetheart, one who's hair has actually come back in and refuses to let his mom cut it and our junior role model who's video we watched of her… Continue

Stability is a wonderful thing!!!!!!

It’s funny now that I’ve become accustomed to being AU I find it very strange if I see a hair anywhere on my body. A weeks or so ago I spotted two hairs growing on my head. They were not near to each other and they fell out quite quickly. Only this morning I happened to see a hair growing on my leg. It was very weird, a solitary little hair all alone on my leg. At one time it would have been surrounded by lots of other hairs but now it was all alone. I touched the hair and it fell out. I’m not… Continue

To speak or not to speak, that is the question!!!!!!

Yesterday as I was travelling back from London I stopped at a motorway service station for a coffee. As I stood in the queue another “Alopecian” joined the queue. It was clear that he noticed my Alopecia. It is obvious now that I am not just simply bald as my eyebrows have virtually all gone and so the alopecia is plain to see. He was also completely bald and had no eyebrows so I naturally assumed he was the same as I am, AU.

I was speaking to the person behind the counter but I… Continue

Well I’ve done it!!!!!!!

Well I’ve done it!!!!!!!

Having experienced the loss of lots of my body hair I was feeling very much the same as I did when my head hair was falling out. As such, I was tempted to use the same course of action that I had used when the hair on my head was coming out – to remove what was let so that I no longer had to see it falling out.

Well yesterday after about 60% of my body hair had gone (I was really hairy) I went to see a friend of mine who has a business removing… Continue

Waiting game!

Have you ever felt like you were ahead of the game and were waiting for everyone around you to catch up??? I'm still waiting to hear if I got that sales position - they had to run it through all the monkeys running the show too! I'm organizing a camp for Canadians with alopecia this summer and before I can even think about getting registration forms written up, I'm waiting for the campground to send my information package. I've done just about everything I can do with everything and I'm waiting… Continue

Life After (or WITH) Alopecia? (Please respond!)

Hi everyone!

I'm handling my female pattern baldness a lot better than I used to handle it. I believe once again that I'm worthy of love and fun. But every now and so often I catch myself thinking "I better enjoy this while I can. If I am ever bald, I won't have this." This is mostly true of dates and relationships with guys. I know my girl friends are there for me and with me no matter what. They think wigs are cool, so this would only be an "exciting" condition to them. Guys, on the… Continue

My Saturday

Saturday morning and I am off to London to see the Rugby, England v Italy in the Six Nations competition. I am taking clients, one of which is an Italian so it should be a fun day out.

I have chosen to go on the train as the weather has been so bad in places yet as I sit on the train as a paying guest of Virgin Rail the view out the window is of a glorious winter wonderland. The sun is shining and the snow looks so inviting. The reality though is that it has been such a problem to so… Continue
