"A UNIVERSITY student with a fear of heights has just signed up to jump from an aeroplane at 12,000 feet.

Twenty years-old Joe Slack from Westleigh is doing a sponsored skydive on May 11 to raise fund for the support group (Bebold.org.uk) that has done such a lot to help his younger sister, Kim, who…

Alopecia awareness! Portland, OR, photo shoot

Hello Everyone!

First of all I would like to apologize for not being on the site more often. You are all wonderful people with interesting and inspiring stories to tell.

A little about me. I was diagnosed with Alopecia 10 years ago when I was 15. Its been a tough road for me and my loved ones. For the past month I have been walking this crazy earth without a hair piece and have been feeling pretty confident about it. Still some ups and downs. Now, I have tried this 3 times…

Using my head

Last week I was grocery shopping and, when I went to check out, a woman approached me to say she thought I was beautiful and that she wished she could do what I do. She went on to explain that she lost most of her hair due to alopecia. I told her I was familiar with alopecia and, in fact, have it myself. She was fearful of what others might say if they knew about her condition, but she really liked my look.

She was wearing a wig and said she normally wears one, so I suggested she…

It's OK. You are OK

Driving home tonight from work, something struck me. For the first time since I was first diagnosed with alopecia at the tender age of 8(28 years ago) I can actually feel the emotional scars fading. No longer do I feel restricted or ashamed of having alopecia. Yes the scars will always remain but fading they are. From all the years that I hid having alopecia, from the shame and embarrassment I felt, the lack of feeling "normal" or even "beautiful" and feeling totally alone. Of doing the…

Where I am today is where many of you will be tomorrow

Occasionally I receive an email from someone saying that they wished they had my strength to handle alopecia -- as if I woke up one day without my hair and was immediately ok with it. As most members here would attest, that is hardly ever the case. Where I am today is probably where many of you will be tomorrow.

I wrote the following in response to one such email and thought that other members that are new to alopecia or struggling may benefit from it too:

You would be…

A Year in Retrospect

I just wanted to start off by saying I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Looking back on the year pass, I amaze myself by how genuinely happy I have been. Yes I still have bad days but dont we all? And yes I still have hair memories. But how can you not when you see commercial after commercial with hair flipping all over the place. We definitely need to see some fabulous bald ladies in commercials. But during those moments I just rub my smooth head and I feel better.…

Out in the world as an alopecian; the job interview and further steps

While I am a musician (Singer/Songwriter), I don't exist off the air I breathe. It would be nice. When I was signed to a label in the mid-90s I toured, made very good money. Long story short, my contract with my label was not renewed. It meant "start over". Back to a day job. I burned the candle at both ends, working to support myself, pursuing my musical endeavors, writing performing.

Like millions of other Americans I was laid off in 2008. I work as a temp whenever afforded the…

Random thought on my journey with alopecia

Most of you know that I am from Canada and rj is American. So when we married we started a whirlwind of immigration processes. I had to file yet another form and get another set of biometric done. One of the steps was another photo session at the immigration office.

I filled out the form and clicked “bald” as my hair color. For a second I wondered if I should have clicked black, since it was an official government form and being AA my black hair does show if I don't shave daily. I…

A step in the right direction

Wow so much has happened this summer. My first annual alopecia event that I put to together in my city was a wonderful success. I met many people within my city that also have alopecia. Adults and children. Many of which knew nothing of this wonderful site and all you wonderful people here. It was nerve racking to step out in front of the audience at the baseball game and tell everyone why I was here. And it happened all so fast. My plan was to walk out and tell everyone why I was here and then… Continue

Alopecians...do NOT boost your immune system!

Several months ago, I decided to start taking Zinc for my Alopecia Areata, thinking it was a good thing to boost my immune system. After probably a couple of weeks on the Zinc, I began to wonder if this was a good thing to do, or not. Well, at this years NAAF conference, what I began to suspect was confirmed. DO NOT take Zinc, or anything else to boost your immune system!!! Your immune system is attacking your hair follicles, thus, boosting your immune system only aids in what is causing your… Continue

Walking down the street in Philadelphia!

So, I am working at a Temp assignment while I look for a permanent job. I was on my way to an interview and was a little nervous, hoping that my baldness won't have a negative impact, that I get the job.

as I walk down the street, this man comes up along side me and says "looking good sis, looking good; I wish more women showed what God gave them and go natural like you; I'm tired of all these women with their horse-hair wigs and weaves; they ought to just wear what God gave them.… Continue

The Good Life

Has anyone seen The Good Life? The main character has alopecia and I liked how the writers and the director portrayed it. It was an issue that the character dealt with but it didnt define his whole life or take over the main message of the movie. It said just enough. At least I think so.

So...how much DOES stress affect my Alopecia?

With the upcoming Christmas holidays fastly approaching comes the added stress of shopping, Christmas parties, cards to send out, and schedules to coordinate so we can all spend some time together. In addition to the upcoming holiday, I have been at odds with one of my sisters. Despite our family's efforts to help her, she was homeless for 2 months. Now she is mad at me, over doing the right thing...without going into too many details, for telling the truth, and we have parted…

INTERNATIONAL ALOPECIA DAY - spread the word in other languages!

As many of you know, the name of our annual awareness and pride event was changed in May by vote of the National Bald Out Group. The event is now called "International Alopecia Day".

Because of the name change, I removed the second NBO video that I had made, and it's no longer on YouTube. So, the text is no longer available there. But, in case anyone else wants to translate the message into…

It's genetic afterall!

I have been doing a daily blog on another website lately but this is totally alopecia related and I'm kind of excited about this new information I thought I'd share it with my Alopecia World family! Over the last year or so I've come into contact with my biological family, I was adopted at birth and my aunt just told me the coolest thing today. Apparently I look and act very much like my grandmother in certain ways who has unfortunately passed away now but the coolest part is is that she too… Continue

When alopecians being portrayed in a bad image collaterally

I'm quoting a brief news article below from a Malaysian online news portal which read (recently):

["Youths sporting the close crop hairstyle akin to skinheads are making a comeback in various shopping malls, reported Kosmo! Ahad.

These groups had been seen loitering in malls such as The Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur during weekends or at underground music performances.

A former member, Mohd Haris, said there was one group in each state.

“They…
