I'm taking a trial migraine drug; or was, until I found a bald spot on my head. My neurologist removed me from the trial drug -- which was working amazingly well -- but swore she didn't think there was any correlation between the drug and the alopecia.
I did some research and found out that alopecia is a side-effect in a few migraine drugs. As high as 7%! I also found that since alopecia is so "prevalent" a condition (around 0.1% of the world) that it isn't really ever considered a…

I have the very best friend that anyone could ask for. My best friend ,Jennifer, has been there for me during my whole hair loss she was even one of the friends that offered to shave my head when I was ready. We have a friend ,Robert, that is in theater make-up and makes wigs and she asked him to make me a wig for my birthday/xmas. She talked to him first about being able to make one for me and when he said he could she had to say something to me about it because he needed to know the colour,…

Hello all my AW friends! As the year starts winding down to a close, I always get a little reflective of the year's passings. For me, I think 2009 can be summed up in the phrase "It's been a BUGGER of a year". There's no doubt in my mind that I'll be happy to see the end of '09!
Many of my close friends on AW know that in '09, not only did Alopecia Areata rear it's ugly head in July, but I also found out this year that my Blood Pressure is high. If that wasn't bad enough, the stress…

If you have a huge head like I do, it is SO hard to find hats. And especially if you're looking for regular hats in Winter. Everything we saw was either too small, or too wintery.
It seems that since I've been diagnosed with AA, everyone in my family is treaating me differently. Sometimes I just want to be treated like someone that isn't losing their hair. My friends are being super-cool about it, and they actually treat me better than my family. Its a little strange, but once everyone…

I have wigs! My amazing friend and I went wig shopping yesterday and, since they were so cheap for stuff that felt not half bad (they're both made from Kanekalon and are oh, so so shiny), I got two. One sleek asymmetric crop/bob and one shoulder length layered style with a fringe. They both need to be trimmed, which I'm having done on Friday by a salon I found through Trevor Sorbie's My New Hair project. The fringe on the longer one reaches somewhere near my nose when I wear it right and…

Right now I am a film major at the University of Michigan. I am taking a screenwriting class where I have to write a full 90 page screenplay. My professor told us to write about what you know so it's simple but also make it interesting. I've decided to write about a 17 year old girl named Alex who has just be diagnosed with Alopecia as she goes into her senior year of high school. I would like to thank everyone who I have met with Alopecia for helping me through this writing process and being…

For the past 3 years I went all the emotions that go with having alopecia--sadness, anger, depression, finally acceptance. With that acceptance came a new found feeling of self worth so I decided a couple months ago to attempt dating again though I wasn't sure how I would tell people about my alopecia. After talking with several people who gave me good advise on this topic I entered the dating scene again. Well I am 0-4 when it comes to dating. After several conversations with men and/or…

So this weekend I went to DC and stayed at the Gaylord National Resort. My mother had a conference there for continuing education, and I went along for the ride and the free vacation, since I'm afraid to be alone should I have another attack like the one that almost required a tracheotomy. Anyway, this resort is VERY ritzy. You know the scene in
Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts first enters the hotel and goes "Wow!" Like that.
I'd had pain on the drive down. What should have…

I like to write about my boyfriend because I think it's important for women to know that there are some really great men out there...and you shouldn't let alopecia stop you from snagging a good one ; )
My bio hair was blonde...thats how my boyfriend met me years ago...as a blonde. Last 2 yrs, I have had brown hair (wigs)...and Im contemplating blonde again. I asked John which hair color he likes best. He said " I like you best with no hair...you are so cute with no hair"

So my spots hurt so bad. The pain ranges from a feeling of tight skin to sore/bruis-ie sensation to can't sleep on my pillow, to straight up pain like someone is poking a needles in my head. Is this a part of alopecia areata or do I possibly have Cicatricial alopecia? Any thoughts?

so the battle continues, I'm loosing a lot of hair and not sure what to do, I'm trying not to stress like I did the last time it all happened!!
I just don't want to wake up one morning and not be able to hide the thinning (have no new patches). I don't know if I should go back to the dermatologist, don't know if it is really worth as he wont be able to do anything.

I had planned to buy a wig, not a pricey one or anything that I'd wear every day, just one to get me through a week at home over Christmas. I'm mostly OK with being bald in public where I live now; it's a pretty laid back city and I work in a very bohemian shop. But my family live in a very small insular little town (from whence I gleefully escaped earlier this year) and the thought of going out bald there gives me a whole body shudder. I'm pretty confident, but not
that confident and I…

Well, since I got my wig I've become more open with AA, I accept it more and I don't really care what people think of it, everyone I've told it reacted well to it.
Now that I know that I thought it was time to tell my class about it. So last Thursday we had gymnastics. I told the teacher (who's also my mentor guy, do he already knew about everything) and he put the class together on the bench.
He told them that we thought we could trust them and hoped that they wouldn't react in a…

On November 30, I was accepted as an US permanent resident. Although it was great news to know that I could now really start my life here. It also bought feelings of missing my family and friends back in Canada. It was as if it was a realization, even though I have been here for months!
Yesterday, my sister left me a phone message, asking for a…

So, at the beginging of November I was laid off from my job. It has been a wonderful oppurtunity because now I have to do what I planned on doing in a few months. The problem is I know what I want but, I have to take all these baby steps to get it. I wish it would come quicker than what it's coming. As for my future in Wisconsin, I don't plan on staying here much longer after I finish my degree but, I don't know where I want to go. I haven't be able to travel much since I was fifteen and I am…
