i just moved to boston and i'm loving it so far but the air here is very dry. i just saw a picture someone tagged me in and my hair looks so dried out! i know this can be a problem with wigs because our scalp oil doesn't really get on the hair. does anyone have tips for how to deal with this? also, i have bangs and sometimes they get oily and I need to wash my hair but washing it too much dries out the rest of it. any advice is welcome!

I just wanted to say Hello to all you lovely wonderful people.
I am new to Alopecia world.
I have AU, funnily enough it's actually 1 year just now that I lost all my wonderful thick long latin hair over a period of 2 weeks. It's been quiet a journey but here I am thanks to the wonderful support Ive had not just from friends & family but from the great doctors I've seen, also most importantly to my positive attitude, and yes I sure have cried sometimes....... anyway just to say…

Every day I wake to find my patches have grown. I read the posts & blogs on here & everyone is so strong. It's been helping, but man, this sucks LOL I know the strength to deal with this won't come over night, so I try very hard to remain positive as I am a firm believer in the power of positivity in all things. I have shared what is going on with family and close friends who have been an amazing support. I am blessed to have such amazing people in my life.
I ordered a wig off…

I feel I need to apologize for my "rant".
It was one of those days. One might call it a "feel sorry for yourself day" or my kids might say I was "wigging out".
You need to know I read these AW blogs and AW it all connects. I feel home. This is the first time people understand. The people here know what it like to put a face on in the morning, you know the stares, the impolite as well as the ones that are too too polite.
Sincerely,
Donna Kooken

Hi everyone on AW!
It's been a few weeks. Christmas is over and work is in high gear. Lots of projects and no time to come on here and talk to everyone. I miss that and hope I can get on more.
Last time I posted I talked about wearing a wig to my work holiday party. I did not end up wearing one to that event, but since then I have been wearing them more frequently. Actually I should qualify that, wearing them around people who know me and know what I look like…

I joined a online chat room thing on my iphone, and a guy asked if we could exchange pictures, he then proceeded to send me a pic, which was disgusting and horrible - below the waist of course naked.... eeewwww i dont want to see that.
So i said to him im going to send you a pic of myself bare naked
His reply was Hell yes..... thinking he was going…

On two separate occasions I have been in a situation where family members have made comments that were rather insulting. I was too baffled to say anything. The most recent comment really bothered me since I have been trying so hard to regain my confidence. I am a very self aware and self confident individual. However, after being faced with losing all but 1% of my hair in 3 weeks and now losing almost all of my eyebrows and eyelashes, it has taken a toll on how I feel in public. I know…

Today was the first day in a long time that it was not easy being an alopecian.
For those that know me and following me on my facebook page "Bald and Fabulous" I work hard on spreading awareness and inspiring others to embrace who they are in the face of alopecia. I do share my page around to different facebook pages, mainly those of other businesses and support sites. Today was the first time I received a "hater" comment. Nothing obviously rude, but enough to prove the point that the…

Sigh... I've just been looking around on line for wig ideas. I learned which suppliers the local hair places use and look through the catalogues on line. But what I don't ever understand are the price differences. It could be the same brand of wig but the long hair lengths cost less then the required shorter length. Do I buy long then go to a decent hair dresser to cut it? Do I keep looking for a decent priced short length. Man they are so expensive in the UK. I'm also a bit worried about on…

Its February 2012. At the end of February 2011 I realized after seeing a photo of myself, that my alopecia was beyond repair; not enough hair on my head to "cover" the spots as I had been doing the past 18 years. I went to my hairdresser, who was instrumental in fixing what hair I had left throughout the years to shave off what was left of my hair.
That happened on March 5th. Its almost a whole year. I've grown a great deal. I have had many realizations, some good, some horrible.…

Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a Freedom Wig, and although the ordering process was very positive, I am not happy with the density of the wig. I ordered light density, and I regret that I did not order light/medium density, as I personally feel that the wig does not have enough hair. Freedom has informed me that if I wanted extra hair added, I would have to pay for it, but I have not heard back as to how much they would charge me. My Rep and Freedom have also encouraged me to…
ContinueTomorrow I've decided that I'm going to transition from my beautiful long curly wig to my short dark straight hair that has been slowly growing back over the last few months. I'm so scared. I hope to think that this is the end of it all (my dermatologist has said my recovery was good) but what if it comes back? It was easy enough to transition to a wig as nobody noticed, but I'm so worried the hair I have now will fall out then I wouldn't know what to do! It would be embarrasing for me to…

Occasionally I receive an email from someone saying that they wished they had my strength to handle alopecia -- as if I woke up one day without my hair and was immediately ok with it. As most members here would attest, that is hardly ever the case. Where I am today is probably where many of you will be tomorrow.
I wrote the following in response to one such email and thought that other members that are new to alopecia or struggling may benefit from it too:
You would be…

So I'm having lunch with a few of my girlfriends sharing little anecdotes about our lives, as you do, when one starts to tell what happened at work. Now she's a nurse in an aged care facility and one old gentleman who has dementia has started doing strange things like peeing in corners of the room etc and he happens to wear a toupee. The toupee is getting more and more ragged looking and the nurses had been plotting on how to take it off him as he's pretty attached to it [no pun intended].…
