The power of a word

Recently, within the forums here on Alopecia World, a discussion has been raised in regard to the issue of creating another word besides "bald" to describe us. It has turned out to be a most vigorous discussion, with many opinions being voiced both in favor of and against it. Apparently, the word "bald" really hits a nerve with us alopecians, and I am no exception. In one of the replies to this discussion, it was suggested that we come up with "a better word for which we can describe ourselves… Continue

~A Special Prayer~

God bless my friends, and bless my children too

And God there's just one more thing, I wish that you would do,

If You don't mind me asking, to just bless my 'puter too??

Now I know that it's not normal to bless a small machine.

But listen just a second, and I'll try to explain.

You see, that little metal box holds more than odds and ends.

Inside those small components, rest a hundred loving friends.

Some, it's true, I've…

Express yourself and make friends from all over the world!

Do you know what makes Alopecia World different?

Well, it isn't different just because it is an online community. There are scores of wonderful online communities for alopecians, and these have been around for years.

The thing that really makes Alopecia World unique is that it is a social networking site like MySpace, Facebook, Xanga, and some others. However, unlike other social networking sites, Alopecia World exists to meet the support and friendship needs of alopecians,…

It's About Time I Let it Out and Let it GO.

When I was a kid my mom would wash my hair in the kitchen sink. Once when I was 6 to 8 years old (I can’t remember the exact age.) my mom found a little nickel sized bald spot on my head. Thinking it was odd she took me to the doctor. They didn’t know much but they did call it Alopecia Areata. They said most kids grow out of it but a few grow up and lose all the hair they have…and oh and by the way… no known cause and no known cure. SUPER! The word BALD was introduced to me as a child and it… Continue

Hello.

Hello to everyone on this site. I am a single mom to the best little girl, Peyhton. She is about to turn 7 years old next month! I am starting his page for my beautiful little girl!

She was diagnosed about 3 years ago with Alopecia. It began when the fighting with her father and his then new gf(now wife)started and they began putting her in the middle of our grown up problems. It comes and goes in waves. It is just in spots on her head, but at times they have been small&few,… Continue

Where I get my hair

I have had many people ask me about my hair so again I thought I’d post a quick blog about my hair and where I get it…First off thank you for all the wonderful compliments . I got my hair from Madeline's Hair Replacement in Maine where I am from. The lighter hair is a custom piece I had done about two and a half years ago. One of the owners, Ken took a plaster mold of my head and then had a hair prosthetic custom made to match my scalp....it fits great! It is completely secure, I never worry… Continue

The first time I shaved my head

I will never forget it...I went into the salon to see how much it would cost, the lady told me $12.00. I said you have got to be kidding I have only half a head of hair. The lady looked at me like I had ten heads. I lifted up my hair and she then saw that underneath was all gone. The lady at the salon charged me $6.00 that day to have my head shaved. I have been bald ever since.

Relationships are relationships -- regardless of our alopecia

Having a relationship with alopecia is no different from having relationship with hair.

We find someone who accepts our lack of hair, but everything else remains. We still have to battle through the process of merging 2 personalities, and me and rj are no different.

We have our good days, our bad days and the days that our relationship is just a struggle. It's all part of the package of loving and growing with someone.

I am not perfect and neither is… Continue

Share the gift of acceptance

Share the gift of acceptance The greatest gift that you can give or receive is the gift of love and acceptance.

To be admired and appreciated for who you are, to know that you are treasured and cherished simply because of the person you are, to have the assurance that those nearest and dearest to you genuinely understand what truly makes you beautiful and special, is not only the most wonderful feeling in the world, but also the most amazing thing that could happen to anyone.

That’s why Alopecia…

Well I Did It.

After reading what some of ya'll had said about your experinces with the first time you shaved your head, I decided to do it. On this past Friday after work I had an appoinment with one of my wig stylists to put my hair up in an up-do for a party I was going to. I took my best friend Brittany who was in town from Ohio with me. We were sitting around laughing & enjoying a martini while Cheryl & Angela were styling my wig. I looked over and say the razor sitting on Cheryl's counter. She… Continue

My Tattoo Experience

Hi Everyone!

I have had many people ask how my tattoo procedure went so I just wanted to post a quick blog to let everyone know how it went! My tattoo experience was great!!!! Jeffery Segal, who did the tattoos was absolutely wonderful! He is so talented! There was very little pain involved because he uses Novocain to numb the area. I had both my eyebrows and lash line done. With the eyebrows there was no swelling or pain at all and the eyes were not swollen just a little puffy the… Continue

just a few thoughts on my mind

So, I’ve been thinking for some time. I’ve had AU for just about 5 years now and I’m a sophomore in college. For now, I wear a bandana practically everywhere I go. When I’m at home or in my apartment (at school), I will go around bald because it is more comfortable and I know my family/roommates don’t mind. For a while, when people would come over, the first thing I would think would be to cover up. I’ve slowly come out of that, and will let them see me without anything covering my head. (But… Continue

Alopecia and plastic surgery

OK, I just found another good reason to have AU. I had a little "tuck" done on my face and my doctor said that he wished that everyone had alopecia! He didn't have to try and hide stitches in my non-existent hair line!!
