Some sorta/kinda acceptance

So I have finally accepted (after 25 years) that I am a slave to my wig. I started sleeping in my wig two months ago. I take it off only to wash it and to scrub my scalp once a week. Actually ....now that I'm not running for my wig whenever the door rings, or hiding beneath windows in fear that the neighbors will see how horrific I really am, life has gotten better. Believe it or not, my husband Of 8 years even responds to me better. Go figure.

This time I'm not leaving without you

Well it certainly has been a long time since I've been on this site... I guess I'll just do a quick update. I was contacted recently on facebook by the girlfriend off one of my cousins. She just got diagnosed recently- maybe a year ago?- with alopecia. My cousin, having grown up all his life with me having alopecia, referred her to me because shes been having some difficulty adjusting, and doesn't have anyone to talk to about it.

I feel so bad for her. I know how hard it is to deal with… Continue

My testimony

A Testimony of Mine Own

Given at CCCMOPS in Spring of 2010

Jesus is with me always. Even as a little girl I somehow knew Jesus would answer my prayers.

One morning, when I was 3 years old, my mom was putting my hair up in piggy tails and she noticed a dime size spot on the back of my head that was missing hair. A bald spot. I remember going to several doctors, having blood tests, and my mom crying a lot from not knowing why I had several bald spots all over my head.…

I am 21. turning 22 in February. I will tell my story and hope I can find some of you to help me understand, googling this stuff doesnt help because different sites I find all say different things so i'm not sure what to believe...

In 2009 I notice in december my eyebrow was starting to thin in the middle of…

Newbieeee

I have no idea how this site works, so I have no idea who will be reading this, but whatever. Here's my backstory:

I've had alopecia since 2008. I had ridiculously beautiful red hair down to my torso (my friend called it "hair porn" haha) that fell out when I was a sophomore in high school. I was bald by junior year and my hair didn't start coming back until the end of my senior year. It fell out a little when I got to college, but by the ned of my freshman year, I had a full head of…

There is hope

Hi. My name is Clare and i just want to share that i had a very rapid case of AA, In June last year my hair started to fall out very Quickly, first with a few spots then it continued till i lost almost all of it. From start to finish it was all gone within 4 to 5 months it was devastating. However i did do Steroid shots and then my hair started to grow back very slowly and it was curly. My doctor was wonderful and very encouraging. Every case is different so its hard to say if its the right…

Regrowth anyone?

Hi Everyone,

I have been experiencing hairloss which they are calling Diffuse Alopecia Areata and it is severe. It began with severe itchyness which lead me to finding a spot on the back of my head sometime in March. Shortly after that my hair began to fall out all over my head. Actally I'm not sure if it fell out or broke off, I never really seemed to have "bald" spots. It did spread to my pubic area, my underarms, and my eyebrows became a little spotty. I evenually had to shave my… Continue

Steroid injection side-effects? And other questions!

Hi there!

I'm Karli and I have had AA for almost 2 years now. I have been going to the derm for injection treatment once every 5-8 months and my hair has made a comeback in the sites of injection... However, I am finding new spots all over my head. I was wondering what long-term side effects could be caused by the injections, and if I should even keep going to the derm. What are some common short-term side effects? My derm never really talked to me much about the product was or what… Continue

Losing my dependency on wigs

So today I went to church without my wig on and just wore a bandana and headband. I've been sick for weeks and just didn't feel like wearing a wig that would make me feel worse. Much to my surprise, no one even asked why or had much to say except one lady at my table (for luncheon afterwards) said how much she liked my scarf and mentioned she had lots of unused fabric at home and wanted to know if I would like to look at any of it to see if I would like to make scarves for myself. My pastor was… Continue

Reaching out to anyone who will listen

For those that don't know me my name is Danielle. I'm a poet and very much into the arts. I've been struggling with hair loss the past 2 years and I'm desperately trying to find others who are dealing with the same thing. Things have been very lonely for me lately, for I avoid leaving out unless I truly have to. I live in Maryland and I haven't really been able to meet anyone with Alopecia. This message goes out to anyone near, or in my area who is looking for a friend who is caring and… Continue

The daily struggle

You know i have worked so hard to get to where i am now. I have a wonderful family who has unfortunately always it seems struggled financially until it seems now. With the high cost of living in Melbourne, interest rates through the roof my family (mum and dad) were not able to provide me with luxuries. So i worked- from 14 years and 9 months (the legal starting age) I worked. Now nine years later I am still working through things have changed.

Now my family is more relaxed, they are… Continue

Alopecia and gluten?

I've been doing a ton of reading on gluten and from what I hear, gluten can cause Celiac disease which can ultimately lead to alopecia. I'm trying to do as much research on this as possible and would like as much help in doing so. I'm also thinking about trying a gluten free diet for a few months just to see if I get any regrowth. Who knows, it' worth a shot right?

Running for a hero and a cause!

I was brought to tears this morning as I read my "Congratulations you have been selected to run in Rick Hansen's 25th Anniversary Relay across Canada" notice.

Rick Hansen is a man who has been my hero since his first relay across Canada, "Man in Motion", 25 years ago when I was 10 years old (So now you know I'm 35 years young) He is paraplegic and has been raising money to encourage research into spinal injuries and possible cures. He has made life better for thousands of Canadians… Continue

Blow dryers and bald spots!

I don't no how it took me so long to notice this... but today after the usual shower instead of air drying my hair i decided to blow dry and straighten it... totally forgetting about the 3-4in bald patch at the back of my head i had the blow dryer on high (since the rest of my hair is thick )so the hot air attempting to dry my hair eventually got to my bald patch and burnt like you wouldn't believe, all in all my mom laughed at me, haha, anyone else ever have this happen ??

"Everybody thinks you should be happy just because your young but they dont see the wars we fight every single day"

"Is that your real hair?" one person asks, "is that a wig?" followed by another person, "why do you wear it?" followed by another person. Questions that haunt me every single day. Why are they so interested in me? I ask myself. Why cant they use their words for good? What did I ever do to them to make them make me feel so.... bad? But this isnt a fairytale where a world is filled with nice & sweet people. No no , no no. This is reality and some people in this world isnt so sweet and nice.… Continue

My daughter is 3yrs old now but lost all hair at age 2yrs old, no eyebrowns, eyelashes. Im just interested in others diagnosed so young. The doctors at St Louis Childrens Hospital said she will most likely never grow hair at all because she was so young and so severe. Im just curious what you all have seen, had happen. Thanks!
