Healing Haiku

Hello Family!

In the spirit of TallGirl’s excellent blog on the power of the internet in the creation of our home here at Alopecia World; I would like to launch a blog for creative expression. For those of you who are not familiar with haiku, there are many forms, but the basic format is a small poem that comprises of three lines with a specific structure. The first line of a haiku has 5 syllables. The second line has 7 syllables. And the last line has 5 syllables. As you compose your… Continue

Pregnancy

Hello all! I am now nine months pregnant and have about three to four inches of new growth on my bald spots. These past few days have noticed my scalp tingling. I did some research and found that I am most likely going to lose my hair again about three months after baby is born. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if anyone has heard of Dr Gonens hair up treatment and if it works or not? Thanks!

The BeBold Alopecia Camp 2010

On Friday 30th July 2010 Cowboys and Indians from across the UK decided it was time to meet together at the first ever Childrens’ Alopecia Camp. Some travelling day and night to get there, everybody was pleased to return home to our roots in Scarborough’s Wild West, Pinewood Holiday Park.

The view was wonderful and it was amazing to see how life has changed with a lovely camp site now filled with Cowboy Shacks and Indian Tipis… Continue

Whew!

Well, it's been 8 months and it seems that my hair is growing back in. Not all of it...there are still some pretty thin places. Honestly, though, it's like I stopped caring about it. I used to try to hide the spots, then I finally stopped. Life is still stressful, but at least I recognize it and can deal with it. WHEW! The worst is over.

Have You Seen This Wig!?!?!

Getting ready for the big shave and trying to find a good wig.

I love Ginnifer Goodwin's hair...honestly, it's kind of like my pre-Alopecia hair but with better volume:…

That Answer in the Night

Isn't it remarkable that in 2010 we can put out our alopecian thoughts and fears (be they medical, personal or social) online...and that someone, somewhere, whom we have never met, from anywhere in the world, may be reading and answering at any time of the day or night? That someone, somewhere, may be putting out a little thought of hope or prayer for our situations, or have the very answer we need? Imagine how amazing it is for those of us who went through MANY years of no computer at all… Continue

Accept the things you cannot change

My mom has been asking for years that we take a picture, all four of her kids in the same room together…. Ha! I’ve always said hell no! I am not a photogenic person plus I’ve always been insecure with my weight and physical appearance, plus not to mention all of us work and never really have time for anything. This year I finally decided its time, were getting older and it may be the last time we ever have a chance to slow down and do something good for the person whom gave us life. So I called… Continue

Our wedding day

So much can be said about our special day....our wedding day! A joyous celebration with family, friends, and a man who knows my heart. We could not have asked for a more beautiful and spirit-filled event.

I lead a "bald life" on average 363 days out of the year. I went back and forth on whether to wear a wig on my wedding day. I was not living in my hometown when I lost my hair.… Continue

Work

Now everyone that I work with knows that I wear wigs. It feels great! It is good to know that everyone knows about it. We only have 7 people in the office so its not like I work with a big group of people. And there is only one guy in the office. I went to lunch today with the one coworker who I had not told yet. We had gone to happy hour together a few times and had lunch a few times so I decided it was time to talk to her about it. She said she had no idea that I wore wigs. That felt good! I… Continue

Internal Medicine

Hi.. I am seeing an Internal Medicine doctor on Thursday because the scalp pain is driving me to near suicide. I can't touch my hair or head and it is worse than the hair loss at times. Are there any questions that I should ask the doctor? Any specific tests? Thanks!

EATING DISORDER..SCALP PAIN..HAIR LOSS..SMOKING

Hi everyone.. I was wondering if any of you either male or female have struggled with eating disorders and what your opinion about a correlation between all this is. My doctors said that even though I am way underweight, my labs are normal and the eating disorder didn't cause the severe scalp pain followed by hair loss. Today my scalp burned SO bad I called my dad in tears and made an appointment to see an Internal Medicine doctor on Thursday. I was wondering what opinions people had on this. I… Continue

Irritating people

Why do people have to be so difficult or negative. I am a person who love a good quote or one that makes people respond (well to the quote) no about me. Yesterday I was on my facebook and my quote I found amusing was "loving a man is live loving a child, if you don't correct them when they upset you they will never learn how to treat you with respect", not thinking anything bad about this I received to comments from my boyfriends sister and mother. His sister asks," what is this all about?" and… Continue

Headband wigs - seeking advice

I was going to post this on the discussion board, but decided to post here instead. I've decided to try a headband-style wig as an alternative to a hat. Problem is, I'm in Asia (where the chances of finding a non-costume blonde wig are not very good) and my friend in the US is going to send it to me- so I have to choose one just from online pictures.

I'm kind of torn between the Paris Hilton headband fall ($20 on sale, synthetic hair) and a Put On Pieces headband fall ($150 on sale,… Continue

Donating a bone marrow

I really want to donate a bone marrow, I'm going to be 18 this month. I was looking on www.marrow.com and there are some condititons that can prevent someone from donating. Would it be ok for me to donate even though I have Alopecia Areata?

Thanks in advance

Not sure if I really am "living" with alopecia

I have been without any hair for 8 years. I turned 50 yesterday and thinking back - I had the most beautiful thick brown hair and I still long to have it back. I still pray every day even though I know better. I still cry sometimes and feel sorry for myself. I even still dream that I wake up with it all back. I really do not know if I will ever really accept this. Oh sure I wear a wig and "paint" on eyebrows every day. I sweat like heck in the heat and itch. It can be miserable. I can fool… Continue

Birth control causing alopecia?

Hello!

About a month ago I noticed redness on my scalp and asked my bf to take a look. We were both shocked to discover 3 bald spots on my head. I work at a salon so went in the next day to make sure I haven't always had them. They confirmed I had not, so was able to get estimate how long this has been going on. (2 months)

I went to doc's and got some cream. When I went to apply, I noticed 4 more spots. AHHHH!!! I have been racking my brain trying to understand what is going on… Continue

Do vitamins/supplements help or hurt?

Hi everyone... I have been taking a bunch of supplements since this hair loss and scalp pain started 6 months ago. I had more blood tests done last week and my Vitamin B12 was very high. This caused me to have hives, itchiness, redness, hot feeling, etc... I did more damage than good. My Vitamin D3 was low and my doc told me to take 4000 units a day to boost it back up. I know Vitamin D has a lot to do with your mood and depression but I also read today it can cause scalp pain and hair loss if… Continue
